English speakers often choose ไป “go” or มา “come” by translating the English verb already in their head. Thai asks a prior question: where is the active deictic center, and does the imagined path lead away from it or toward it? ไป points away or onward from that center; มา points toward it. The center is commonly the speaker’s location, but colloquial Thai can adopt the listener’s location—especially between familiar speakers—or project a meeting place or the “here” of a story.
This page diagnoses transfer errors rather than repeating the full account on motion with ไป and มา. Many rejected sentences below are grammatical under another viewpoint. The problem is that they do not express the intended path, referent, or social invitation.
Common Mistakes
1. Saying ไป when inviting someone toward you
Suppose the speaker is already at the café. English may say “Are you going to the café?”, but Thai treats the café as the speaker’s current center.
❌ ตอนนี้ฉันรออยู่ที่ร้านกาแฟ คุณจะไปไหมคะ
Wrong for the intended invitation toward the female speaker. It asks about going away toward a center not established as hers.
✅ ตอนนี้ฉันรออยู่ที่ร้านกาแฟ จะมาหาไหมคะ
ton ni chan ro yu thi ran kafae cha ma ha mai kha
I'm waiting at the café now. Will you come meet me? (polite, female speaker; motion toward her)
The rejected sentence becomes possible if the speaker is elsewhere and asks whether the listener will go to that café. The correction changes the center, not merely one dictionary word.
2. Saying มา for a trip away from both participants
When caller and listener are together at the office and discuss an errand to the bank, the bank is away from the current center.
❌ เดี๋ยวเราไปธนาคารด้วยกันนะครับ แล้วคุณจะมาด้วยไหม
Incoherent for one shared trip from here: the first clause sets outward ไป, but มาด้วย suddenly views the same path as coming toward a different center.
✅ เดี๋ยวเราไปธนาคารด้วยกันนะครับ ไปด้วยไหม
diao rao pai thanakhan duai kan na khrap pai duai mai
We'll go to the bank together in a moment. Are you coming along? (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; shared outward trip)
English come along invites participation; Thai ไปด้วย preserves the actual direction away from the office. มาด้วย would be natural if the bank or another destination had been adopted as the viewpoint.
3. Missing the colloquial listener-centered option
On the phone, a speaker going to the listener’s home can either keep their own departure point as center or, in colloquial speech, adopt the listener’s home as center. The listener-centered choice often suggests greater familiarity.
เย็นนี้ผมจะไปหาคุณที่บ้านครับ
yen ni phom cha pai ha khun thi ban khrap
I'll go see you at your home this evening. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; trip viewed from his own side)
เย็นนี้ผมจะมาหาคุณที่บ้านนะครับ
yen ni phom cha ma ha khun thi ban na khrap
I'll come see you at your home this evening. (colloquial polite speech, male speaker; the familiar listener's home is adopted as center)
Both forms occur in real Thai. ไปหา presents departure from the speaker’s side and is the unmarked choice across relationships; มาหา aligns the path with the addressee’s side and is a colloquial option favored by a closer relationship. Phone calls and messages make this viewpoint alternation especially visible.
4. Treating a future meeting place as permanently ไป
A host can adopt tomorrow’s conference venue as a shared “there where we will meet,” even while nobody is physically there now.
❌ พรุ่งนี้เชิญทุกคนไปประชุมที่ห้องใหญ่ค่ะ
Possible as a direction to go there, but less aligned with the intended host-centered welcome to a shared event.
✅ พรุ่งนี้เชิญทุกคนมาประชุมที่ห้องใหญ่ค่ะ
phrung ni choen thuk khon ma prachum thi hong yai kha
Tomorrow, everyone is invited to come to the meeting in the large room. (formal-polite invitation, female host; venue adopted as center)
The original is not ungrammatical. ไปประชุม views participants leaving their respective locations; มาประชุม presents attendance at the host’s event. Thai lets discourse establish a projected center.
5. Reversing direction after a manner verb
In a security-camera report, the guard is at the entrance and sees a visitor approach that point. The manner verb comes first; ไป/มา then supplies deictic direction.
❌ เห็นผู้ชายคนหนึ่งเดินไปทางประตูที่ผมยืนเฝ้าอยู่ครับ
Wrong for the intended approach toward the male guard's stated position; ไป sends the path away from the adopted center.
✅ เห็นผู้ชายคนหนึ่งเดินมาทางประตูที่ผมยืนเฝ้าอยู่ครับ
hen phu chai khon nueng doen ma thang pratu thi phom yuen fao yu khrap
I saw a man walking toward the door where I was standing guard. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; approaching the center)
If the guard were watching the man recede from his position, เดินไปทางประตู could be exactly right. เดินมา/เดินไป does not identify the destination alone; it orients the path relative to the adopted viewpoint.
6. Putting the directional verb before a carried object
English take away this parcel can tempt learners to place the directional notion before the noun. Thai keeps the object after เอา and before directional ไป/มา. Classifier phrases stay with the noun phrase.
❌ ช่วยเอาไปพัสดุสองกล่องที่รถหน่อยครับ
Incorrect neutral order: the carried object and its classifier phrase must follow เอา before directional ไป.
✅ ช่วยเอาพัสดุสองกล่องนี้ไปไว้ในรถหน่อยครับ
chuai ao phatsadu song klong ni pai wai nai rot noi khrap
Please take these two parcels and put them in the car. (polite request, male speaker; object plus classifier precedes ไป)
The productive frame is เอา + object + ไป/มา + further action or place. See direction in serial predicates.
7. Using ไป where the object is brought to the speaker
At a front desk, the speaker asks a colleague to bring one signed form back to her.
❌ เซ็นแบบฟอร์มฉบับนี้แล้วเอาไปให้ฉันด้วยนะคะ
Wrong for the intended movement back toward the female speaker; ไป construes the form as being carried away from the active center.
✅ เซ็นแบบฟอร์มฉบับนี้แล้วเอามาให้ฉันด้วยนะคะ
sen baep fom chabap ni laeo ao ma hai chan duai na kha
Please sign this form and bring it back to me as well. (polite request, female speaker; ฉบับ classifies the form and มา points toward her)
With a third-party recipient elsewhere, เอาไปให้ฝ่ายบัญชี “take it to accounting” is natural. The recipient and endpoint determine the directional perspective.
8. Reading postpredicate มา as literal arrival only
After an activity plus a duration, มา can trace that situation from an earlier point toward now. Replacing it with ไป reverses the temporal viewpoint.
❌ ดิฉันทำงานในโครงการนี้ไปสามปีแล้วค่ะ
Wrong for the intended ‘have worked here for three years and still do’; ไป presents progression onward and can favor a bounded or away-going view.
✅ ดิฉันทำงานในโครงการนี้มาสามปีแล้วค่ะ
dichan tham ngan nai khrongkan ni ma sam pi laeo kha
I have worked on this project for three years and still do. (formal-polite report, female speaker; มา links the earlier span to now)
The original could be natural in another construction, for example when describing how much time has been spent as a completed stretch. The continuative pattern is developed on viewpoint มา.
9. Treating ไป as future tense
Motion verbs remain lexical or constructional; they are not English tense auxiliaries. A projected event uses context or จะ, while unnecessary ไป may add actual departure or an “onward/away” viewpoint.
❌ เดือนหน้าบริษัทไปเปิดสาขาใหม่ที่ขอนแก่นค่ะ
Marked for the intended neutral future announcement; ไป suggests going away to perform the opening rather than simply scheduling it.
✅ เดือนหน้าบริษัทจะเปิดสาขาใหม่ที่ขอนแก่นค่ะ
duean na borisat cha poet sakha mai thi khon kaen kha
Next month the company will open a new branch in Khon Kaen. (formal-neutral announcement, female speaker)
If executives are traveling from Bangkok to conduct the opening, จะไปเปิดสาขา becomes meaningful and natural. The correction removes an unintended motion component.
A social misunderstanding: “come here” or “go elsewhere”?
A team leader is already in Meeting Room 4. A learner phones from downstairs but uses ไป, so the leader thinks the learner is asking permission to leave for some other destination.
ตอนนี้ผมรออยู่ในห้องประชุม 4 แล้วครับ
ton ni phom ro yu nai hong prachum 4 laeo khrap
I'm already waiting in Meeting Room 4. (ordinary polite speech, male team leader; room established as center)
หนูไปได้เลยใช่ไหมคะ
nu pai dai loei chai mai kha
I can go now, right? (polite, junior female learner; ไป sounds like leaving for somewhere else)
จะไปไหนครับ เราประชุมที่นี่นะ
cha pai nai khrap rao prachum thi ni na
Where are you going? We're meeting here. (ordinary polite clarification, male team leader)
ขอโทษค่ะ หมายถึงหนูขึ้นมาห้อง 4 ได้เลยใช่ไหมคะ
kho thot kha mai thueng nu khuen ma hong 4 dai loei chai mai kha
Sorry—I mean I can come up to Room 4 now, right? (polite repair, junior female speaker; ขึ้นมา approaches the leader's center)
The misunderstanding is referential, not just lexical. ขึ้นมา combines vertical path ขึ้น with motion toward the leader’s adopted center. The polite particles keep the interaction respectful but cannot repair the wrong directional viewpoint.
Editing checklist
- Locate the center: speaker, familiar listener, shared destination, host venue, or narrative viewpoint.
- Draw the path: away/onward gives ไป; toward gives มา.
- Check each clause again: a new speaker, quoted viewpoint, or scene can reset the center.
- Bracket carried objects: use เอา + noun + number + classifier + ไป/มา, not a direction word before the object.
- Identify position: ไปซื้อ/มารับ is motion plus purpose; เดินไป/เดินมา adds path after manner.
- Test the rejected sentence: if it is possible, state the alternate center or reading instead of calling it universally ungrammatical.
- Separate spatial and temporal uses: postpredicate มา can connect a prior span to the reference point; ไป can construe continuation onward.
- Keep register independent: pronouns and particles manage the relationship, but they do not determine directional deixis.
Key Takeaways
Persistent ไป/มา errors come from importing an English lexical category before establishing the Thai viewpoint. Rebuild the path, center, predicate order, object phrase, and discourse context. The same destination can take ไป in one sentence and มา in another because the relation to the adopted “here” has changed.
