Thai อยู่ is both a lexical verb meaning “be located, live, stay, or remain” and a post-predicate element that keeps an action or state in progress. Compare คุณนิดอยู่ในครัว “Khun Nit is in the kitchen” with คุณนิดทำอาหารอยู่ “Khun Nit is cooking.” The same written and spoken form appears in both, but its position and the material around it identify the construction.
Lexical อยู่: location, residence, and staying
The basic locative frame is entity + อยู่ + place. The place may follow directly or begin with a relator such as ที่ “at,” ใน “in,” บน “on,” or ข้าง “beside.” Thai does not first translate English be and then add a separate location word.
| Use | Frame | Natural substitution |
|---|---|---|
thorasap yu nai linchak khang tiang khrap
The phone is in the drawer beside the bed. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; known object located)
คุณป้าอยู่ลำปางกับครอบครัวค่ะ
khun pa yu lampang kap khropkhrua kha
My aunt lives in Lampang with her family. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; residence)
เราอยู่โรงแรมนี้อีกสองคืนครับ
rao yu rongraem ni ik song khuen khrap
We're staying at this hotel for two more nights. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; temporary stay)
Time and duration choose among “be,” “live,” and “stay”; อยู่ itself does not. For the broader contrast with existential มี, see Location and Continuity with อยู่.
An invariant-form matrix
Thai reference tables track environments around the verb, not endings on it. Even กำลังอยู่ is possible when a speaker emphasizes a temporary current situation, although plain อยู่ is often sufficient for a stable location.
| Environment | Thai pattern | Interpretation source |
|---|---|---|
| past context | ปีที่แล้วผมอยู่ระยอง | ปีที่แล้ว |
| temporary situation now | ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังอยู่ที่สนามบิน | ตอนนี้ and กำลัง |
| newly reached location | เขาอยู่ที่สำนักงานแล้ว | แล้ว presents the current result |
| prospective stay | พวกเราจะอยู่ต่ออีกคืน | จะ and duration |
| negative location | ตอนนี้เขาไม่อยู่บ้าน | ไม่ before อยู่ |
ปีที่แล้วผมอยู่ระยองหลายเดือนครับ
pi thi laeo phom yu rayong lai duean khrap
Last year I lived in Rayong for several months. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; past supplied by ปีที่แล้ว)
ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังอยู่ที่สนามบินค่ะ
ton ni chan kamlang yu thi sanambin kha
I'm at the airport right now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; temporary current situation emphasized)
พวกเราจะอยู่ต่ออีกคืนครับ
phuak rao cha yu to ik khuen khrap
We'll stay one more night. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; prospective stay)
The table does not make กำลัง, แล้ว, or จะ tense endings. เขาอยู่ที่สำนักงานแล้ว normally reports that he is there now, often after arriving; แล้ว does not turn อยู่ into an English past participle.
Post-predicate อยู่: a situation continues
After another predicate, อยู่ presents that activity or state as ongoing or still holding. กำลัง + predicate + อยู่ brackets a clearly unfolding activity, while predicate + อยู่ alone is often enough in context.
พนักงานกำลังคุยกับลูกค้าอยู่ค่ะ
phanak ngan kamlang khui kap luk kha yu kha
The employee is talking with a customer. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; ongoing activity)
ประตูห้องเก็บของยังเปิดอยู่ครับ
pratu hong kep khong yang poet yu khrap
The storage-room door is still open. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; persisting resultant state)
เด็กนอนอยู่ อย่าเพิ่งเปิดไฟนะคะ
dek non yu ya phoeng poet fai na kha
The child is sleeping; don't turn on the light yet. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
This post-predicate อยู่ developed from the sense “remain.” It does not behave like a separate English be followed by an infinitive. Thai simply places the unchanged predicates in a construction where the later element provides a continuing viewpoint.
Common collocations and extended frames
| Collocation | Usual meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|
| อยู่บ้าน | be/stay at home | neutral |
| อยู่กับ... | live/stay with... | neutral |
| อยู่คนเดียว | live/be alone | neutral |
| อยู่ต่อ | stay on / remain longer | neutral |
| ยังอยู่ | still be present/alive/remain | neutral |
| อยู่ได้ / อยู่ไม่ได้ | be able/unable to stay, live, or manage | neutral |
ยายยังอยู่กับครอบครัวที่บ้านเดิมค่ะ
yai yang yu kap khropkhrua thi ban doem kha
Grandmother still lives with the family in the same house. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
ห้องนี้ร้อนมาก ผมอยู่ไม่ได้ครับ
hong ni ron mak phom yu mai dai khrap
This room is very hot; I can't stay in here. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; situational inability)
In the second example อยู่ไม่ได้ denies the possibility of remaining. By contrast, ไม่ได้อยู่ที่นี่ says that someone is not located or does not live here. The position of ไม่ and ได้ changes the scope.
Negation and recoverable omission
Use ไม่อยู่ + place to deny location, and ไม่ได้อยู่ + place when correcting an assumption about where someone is or lives. Use existential ไม่มี to say that no such entity exists in a location.
วันนี้คุณหมอไม่อยู่ที่คลินิกใกล้ตลาดครับ
wan ni khun mo mai yu thi khlinik klai talat khrap
The doctor isn't at the clinic near the market today. (ordinary polite service information, male speaker; known person absent)
ฉันไม่ได้อยู่กรุงเทพฯ ค่ะ ตอนนี้อยู่ชลบุรี
chan mai dai yu krungthep kha ton ni yu chon buri
I'm not in Bangkok; I'm in Chon Buri now. (ordinary polite correction, female speaker)
If someone asks คุณนิดยังอยู่ไหมคะ, the answer ยังอยู่ครับ can omit the location because both people know it. If neither the person nor the place is recoverable, supply the missing material.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
คืนนี้คุณจะอยู่ที่สำนักงานถึงกี่โมงคะ
khuen ni khun cha yu thi samnakngan thueng ki mong kha
Until what time will you be at the office tonight? (polite question, female speaker)
ผมจะอยู่ถึงสองทุ่มครับ ทีมกำลังแก้ระบบอยู่
phom cha yu thueng song thum khrap thim kamlang kae rabop yu
I'll be here until eight p.m.; the team is fixing the system. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; lexical and post-predicate อยู่)
ถ้าเสร็จแล้ว โทรบอกด้วยนะคะ
tha set laeo tho bok duai na kha
When it's finished, please call and let me know. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
ได้ครับ ถ้ายังไม่เสร็จ ผมจะอยู่ต่อ
dai khrap tha yang mai set phom cha yu to
All right. If it isn't finished, I'll stay longer. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting เป็น before a location
❌ ตอนนี้ฉันเป็นที่สนามบินค่ะ
Incorrect—เป็น does not form the ordinary locative predicate.
✅ ตอนนี้ฉันอยู่ตรงประตูทางออกค่ะ
ton ni chan yu trong pratu thang ok kha
I'm by the exit right now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
2. Introducing a new entity with อยู่
❌ ในสวนอยู่สุนัขหนึ่งตัวครับ
Incorrect neutral existential order—use location + มี to introduce the dog.
✅ ในสวนมีสุนัขนอนอยู่หนึ่งตัวครับ
nai suan mi sunak non yu nueng tua khrap
There is one dog lying in the garden. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Putting อยู่ before the activity in a progressive
❌ เขากำลังอยู่คุยกับหัวหน้าค่ะ
Incorrect neutral progressive order—อยู่ follows the activity predicate.
✅ เขากำลังคุยกับหัวหน้าอยู่ค่ะ
khao kamlang khui kap huana yu kha
He is talking with the supervisor. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Moving negation after lexical อยู่
❌ พรุ่งนี้ผมอยู่ไม่บ้านครับ
Incorrect—ไม่ precedes the denied locative predicate.
✅ พรุ่งนี้ผมไม่อยู่บ้านช่วงเช้าครับ
phrung ni phom mai yu ban chuang chao khrap
I won't be home tomorrow morning. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
5. Using อยู่ as a copula before a property predicate
❌ ห้องนี้อยู่เงียบมากค่ะ
Incorrect—เงียบ is already a complete property predicate and does not need อยู่ before it.
✅ ห้องรับรองชั้นบนเงียบมากค่ะ
hong raprong chan bon ngiap mak kha
The upstairs reception room is very quiet. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Lexical อยู่ precedes a location and covers being located, residing, staying, and remaining.
- Post-predicate อยู่ keeps an action or state in view as continuing.
- The verb stays unchanged; time phrases, กำลัง, แล้ว, จะ, and ไม่ supply viewpoint and scope.
- Omit a person or place only when the conversation makes it recoverable.
