Thai normally locates a known person or thing with อยู่ + place: หนังสืออยู่บนโต๊ะ “the book is on the table.” It presents the book as the entity being located. To introduce something as present or available at a place, Thai uses an existential frame with มี: บนโต๊ะมีหนังสือ “there is a book on the table.” English uses be in both translations, but Thai distinguishes location from existence through predicate choice and order.
Locating a known entity with อยู่
The basic locative frame is entity + อยู่ + place expression. Place expressions often begin with ที่ “at,” ใน “in,” บน “on,” ใต้ “under,” ข้าง “beside,” หน้า “in front of,” or หลัง “behind.”
| Function | Productive frame | Natural substitution |
|---|---|---|
| Known entity's location | entity + อยู่ + place | หนังสืออยู่บนโต๊ะ |
| Residence or stay | person + อยู่ + place | พี่สาวอยู่เชียงใหม่ |
| Existence at a location | place + มี + entity | บนโต๊ะมีหนังสือ |
| Action location | subject + action + ที่ + place | ผมทำงานที่บ้าน |
| Posture plus activity | subject + posture + activity + อยู่ + place | เขานั่งอ่านอยู่ในห้อง |
| Negative location | entity + ไม่อยู่ + place | คุณนิดไม่อยู่ที่ร้าน |
กุญแจรถอยู่บนโต๊ะครับ
kunchae rot yu bon to khrap
The car key is on the table. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; known object located)
คุณนิดอยู่ในห้องประชุมค่ะ
khun nit yu nai hong prachum kha
Khun Nit is in the meeting room. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
แมวอยู่ใต้เก้าอี้ครับ
maeo yu tai kao i khrap
The cat is under the chair. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
อยู่ can mean be located, live, or stay
With people, อยู่ + place may describe current location, residence, or a period of staying. Time expressions and context select the reading.
ตอนนี้ผมอยู่ที่สำนักงานครับ
ton ni phom yu thi samnakngan khrap
I'm at the office now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; current location)
พี่สาวฉันอยู่เชียงใหม่ค่ะ
phi sao chan yu chiang mai kha
My older sister lives in Chiang Mai. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; residence from context)
สัปดาห์หน้าผมจะอยู่กรุงเทพฯ สามวันครับ
sapda na phom cha yu krung thep sam wan khrap
Next week I'll stay in Bangkok for three days. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; temporary stay)
อยู่ itself does not conjugate. ตอนนี้, the residence context, and สัปดาห์หน้า...สามวัน supply different time profiles. จะ adds a prospective viewpoint in the last example; it is not an ending on อยู่.
Location versus existence with มี
Compare the information structure:
หนังสืออยู่บนโต๊ะค่ะ
nangsue yu bon to kha
The book is on the table. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; location of an identifiable book)
บนโต๊ะมีหนังสือสองเล่มครับ
bon to mi nangsue song lem khrap
There are two books on the table. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; books introduced as existing there)
The first sentence answers “Where is the book?” The second answers “What is on the table?” In the existential frame, the location commonly comes first and มี introduces the entity. This distinction is developed on possession and availability with มี.
Negation preserves it: หนังสือไม่อยู่บนโต๊ะ means “the book is not on the table,” while บนโต๊ะไม่มีหนังสือ means “there are no books on the table.” ไม่อยู่ denies location or presence of a known entity; ไม่มี denies existence or availability.
คุณหมอไม่อยู่ที่คลินิกวันนี้ค่ะ
khun mo mai yu thi khlinik wan ni kha
The doctor isn't at the clinic today. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; known person's location denied)
ในห้องนี้ไม่มีหน้าต่างครับ
nai hong ni mai mi natang khrap
There are no windows in this room. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; existence denied)
Place complements with actions and motion
Not every place expression needs อยู่. An action can take a location complement: ทำงานที่บ้าน “work at home,” กินข้าวในครัว “eat in the kitchen.” Motion predicates often take a destination directly: ไปตลาด, มาโรงเรียน, กลับบ้าน.
วันนี้ฉันทำงานที่บ้านค่ะ
wan ni chan tham ngan thi ban kha
I'm working at home today. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; action plus location complement)
เด็กกินข้าวอยู่ในครัวครับ
dek kin khao yu nai khrua khrap
The child is eating in the kitchen. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; อยู่ contributes an ongoing/location frame after the action)
พรุ่งนี้เราไปตลาดกันค่ะ
phrung ni rao pai talat kan kha
Let's go to the market tomorrow. (ordinary polite invitation, female speaker; destination after motion verb)
In กินข้าวอยู่ในครัว, following อยู่ can support both the ongoing viewpoint and the participant's location. In ไปตลาด, ตลาด is the goal of motion. Do not call ไป an auxiliary or treat ตลาด as an object simply because it follows a verb. Lexical frame and spatial meaning matter.
Omission and place questions
When the missing entity is obvious, Thai can ask อยู่ไหน “Where is it/are you?” A reply can be only a place: อยู่หน้าร้านค่ะ “I’m in front of the shop.” Pronoun omission is licensed by the exchange, not by อยู่ itself.
ตอนนี้อยู่ไหนคะ
ton ni yu nai kha
Where are you now? (polite question, female speaker; addressee omitted)
อยู่หน้าสถานีครับ กำลังรอรถ
yu na sathani khrap kamlang ro rot
I'm in front of the station, waiting for the bus. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; speaker omitted as recoverable)
If several people are possible, say the name or pronoun. Thai omission is discourse tracking, not free deletion.
English “be” does not choose the Thai predicate
Location uses อยู่, identity uses เป็น or คือ in their own frames, existence uses มี, and properties can predicate without a copula: ห้องกว้าง “the room is spacious.” One English word therefore corresponds to several Thai constructions.
ร้านกาแฟอยู่ข้างธนาคาร และร้านเล็กมากค่ะ
ran kafae yu khang thanakhan lae ran lek mak kha
The coffee shop is beside the bank, and it is very small. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; อยู่ for location, zero copula for size)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ห้องน้ำอยู่ไหนคะ
hong nam yu nai kha
Where is the restroom? (polite question, female speaker)
อยู่ชั้นสองครับ ขึ้นบันไดแล้วเลี้ยวซ้าย
yu chan song khrap khuen bandai laeo liao sai
It's on the second floor. Go up the stairs and turn left. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; ห้องน้ำ omitted)
ชั้นสองมีลิฟต์ไหมคะ
chan song mi lip mai kha
Is there an elevator on the second floor? (polite question, female speaker; availability with มี)
มีครับ ลิฟต์อยู่ข้างบันได
mi khrap lip yu khang bandai
Yes. The elevator is beside the stairs. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; existence then location)
Common Mistakes
1. Using เป็น for physical location
❌ หนังสือเป็นบนโต๊ะค่ะ
Incorrect—physical location uses อยู่.
✅ หนังสือเรียนอยู่บนโต๊ะค่ะ
nangsue rian yu bon to kha
The textbook is on the table. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
2. Confusing a known entity's location with existence
❌ บนโต๊ะอยู่หนังสือสองเล่มครับ
Incorrect for introducing books as present; use location-first มี.
✅ บนโต๊ะมีสมุดสองเล่มครับ
bon to mi samut song lem khrap
There are two notebooks on the table. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Using ไม่มี to deny a known person's location
❌ วันนี้คุณนิดไม่มีที่สำนักงานค่ะ
Incorrect for 'Khun Nit is not at the office'; ไม่มี denies possession or existence.
✅ วันนี้คุณนิดไม่อยู่ที่สำนักงานค่ะ
wan ni khun nit mai yu thi samnakngan kha
Khun Nit isn't at the office today. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Adding อยู่ to every place complement
❌ พรุ่งนี้เราไปอยู่ตลาดกันค่ะ
Incorrect for simple motion to the market; ไป takes the destination directly.
✅ พรุ่งนี้เราไปตลาดด้วยกันค่ะ
phrung ni rao pai talat duai kan kha
Tomorrow we're going to the market together. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
5. Moving ไม่ after the place
❌ คุณหมออยู่คลินิกไม่ครับ
Incorrect—ไม่ precedes อยู่.
✅ ตอนนี้คุณหมอไม่อยู่ที่คลินิกครับ
ton ni khun mo mai yu thi khlinik khrap
The doctor isn't at the clinic now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
Use entity + อยู่ + place to locate a known entity and place + มี + entity to introduce something as existing or available there. Let actions and motion verbs select their own place complements, keep อยู่ invariant across time, and never translate every English be with one Thai copula.
