ยัง as Still, Even More, and Scalar Additive

ยัง most often precedes a predicate and says that a state or possibility remains active: เขายังทำงานอยู่ “He is still working.” The same persistence logic supports additive and scalar uses: แล้วยังพูดจีนได้อีก “and can speak Chinese too,” แม้แต่เด็กก็ยังเข้าใจ “even children understand,” and อันนี้ยังแพงกว่าอีก “this one is even more expensive.”

English separates still, also, and even more. Thai lets ยัง carry a common idea across them: the current proposition remains available beyond an earlier time, item, or expectation. The surrounding construction identifies which alternative is being extended.

The baseline: an earlier state still holds

In its temporal-aspectual use, ยัง comes immediately before the predicate whose validity continues. It does not conjugate that predicate or supply present tense.

Additive ยัง: one more proposition remains true

In แล้ว(ก็)ยัง...อีก/ด้วย, ยัง adds another property, ability, or event to an active list. The added material is often surprising, stronger, or especially relevant—not merely the next neutral item.

Here อีก closes the sense of an additional item or a further point on the scale, while ด้วย gives an additive “too.” These words do not make ยัง decorative: without ยัง, the second property is more like a neutral additional fact; with it, the speaker carries an expectation forward and extends it.

Scalar additive constructions: even X still P

Thai frequently splits scalar focus across two sites. A pre-focus expression such as แม้แต่ X, ขนาด X, or แค่ X introduces an unexpectedly low, high, or limiting alternative; (ก็)ยัง then precedes the predicate that nevertheless remains true.

The first expression identifies the focus; ก็ links that focus to the comment; ยัง says the comment survives the expectation raised by the focus. The natural English word even therefore corresponds to the construction as a whole, not to ยัง alone.

The optionality of ก็ varies with structure and style, but แม้แต่ X ก็ยัง P is an especially clear learner model. Do not move ยัง beside X: its normal place here is before P.

The same proposition in three stances

All three turns describe the same person working.

The first locates an ongoing event. The second compares it with an earlier phase. The third presents the late hour as a counter-expectation and adds นะครับ to invite the listener to register the observation. The proposition is stable; its discourse target is not.

Particle and aspect stacks

ยัง precedes the predicate and any postverbal aspectual material. Linking ก็ normally comes before ยัง; final stance particles follow the entire predicate.

Relationship, omission, and register

Temporal and additive ยัง occur across ordinary speech and formal writing. What changes by register is often the surrounding packaging. แล้วยัง...อีก is conversationally vivid; นอกจากนี้...ยัง... is common in formal exposition (formal/academic). Scalar ขนาด...ยัง... is strongly conversational; แม้...ก็ยัง... fits careful speech and writing.

Thai omits stable participants naturally. In a conversation about a colleague, ยังไม่ตอบเลยค่ะ is enough; repeating เขา is useful only when reference may shift. Politeness comes from the whole turn, not from adding pronouns.

What intonation changes

Stress on ยัง can sharpen contrast: “still, despite that.” A lengthened ยัง in conversation may convey impatience, amazement, or concern that the expected boundary has not been reached. In additive แล้วยัง...อีก, a rising build-up can signal that the speaker has a stronger complaint or compliment to add.

In the last turn, ก็ links the unchanged delay to the attempted follow-up, and ยัง keeps the incomplete checking active. The object and institutional actors need not be repeated in every clause once established.
