The paired frame พอ X ก็ Y presents X as the boundary whose arrival promptly releases Y: พอถึงบ้านก็โทรหาแม่ “As soon as [I] got home, [I] called Mom.” พอ opens the boundary clause; ก็ resumes the main line at the resulting event.
The construction often suggests a practical causal connection, but its grammatical core is immediate sequence, not “because.” It is especially natural in conversation and lively narrative. Thai uses clause order and the pair พอ…ก็, not tense inflection, to package the two events.
The boundary–release pattern
| Part | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| พอ + clause X | sets a reached boundary | พอรถจอด “once the bus stops” |
| ก็ + clause Y | releases the next event/result | ก็ลงได้ “then you can get off” |
| พอ X, Y | lighter conversational instruction | พอถึงแล้วโทรมา “call once you arrive” |
| Y ทันทีที่ X | explicit immediate relation; neutral/formal | แจ้งทันทีที่ทราบผล “notify us as soon as results are known” |
พอรถจอดก็ลงทางประตูหลังได้ครับ
pho rot chot ko long thang pratu lang dai khrap
As soon as the bus stops, you can get off through the rear door. (ordinary-polite instruction, male speaker)
พอฉันเปิดประตูแมวก็วิ่งออกไปค่ะ
pho chan poet pratu maeo ko wing ok pai kha
As soon as I opened the door, the cat ran out. (ordinary-polite narrative, female speaker; different subjects are explicit)
พอระบบตรวจพบความผิดปกติก็จะส่งข้อความเตือนโดยอัตโนมัติ
pho rabop truat phop khwam phit pokkati ko cha song khokhwam tuean doi attanomat
As soon as the system detects an anomaly, it will automatically send an alert. (formal technical statement; recurring boundary and programmed result)
The first event is normally bounded: arrival, discovery, completion, opening, stopping, or some other change that can be recognized as reached. The second follows with little relevant delay. ก็ does not translate English then mechanically; here it marks the return from the subordinate boundary to the main outcome.
The narrative-sequencing guide places พอ…ก็ among other ways Thai orders events. The special contribution of this pair is the tight boundary: Y becomes relevant right when X is attained.
Same subject, changed subject, and omission
When both clauses share an obvious actor, Thai commonly omits it from one or both clauses:
พอส่งรายงานเสร็จก็กลับบ้านเลยค่ะ
pho song raingan set ko klap ban loei kha
As soon as I finished submitting the report, I went straight home. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker; same subject recovered from context)
This sentence does not contain an infinitive. The zero subjects are licensed by discourse continuity. If actors change, state them:
พอลูกค้าเซ็นสัญญาฝ่ายบัญชีก็ออกใบแจ้งหนี้ครับ
pho lukkha sen sanya fai banchi ko ok bai chaeng ni khrap
As soon as the client signs the contract, accounting issues the invoice. (formal-polite procedure, male speaker; changed subjects explicit)
In long instructions, repeat a role even if it is inferable. พออนุมัติแล้วก็ส่งให้ลูกค้า could mean that the approver sends the item or that another team does. Thai does not require an overt subject, but professional clarity often does.
No relative-clause gap or resumptive pronoun is involved. Both halves are clauses whose missing participants are recovered in the ordinary Thai way. Adding เขา does not automatically solve reference if several people are salient; a role such as หัวหน้า or ฝ่ายบัญชี is safer.
Why clause order matters
The canonical order is temporal boundary first, consequence second:
พอไฟดับทุกคนก็มองหาทางออกค่ะ
pho fai dap thuk khon ko mong ha thang ok kha
As soon as the power went out, everyone looked for the exit. (ordinary-polite narrative, female speaker)
This iconic order lets the listener encounter events in their conceptual chronology. A main clause can come first with a following ทันทีที่ clause in more planned prose—ทุกคนมองหาทางออกทันทีที่ไฟดับ “Everyone looked for the exit as soon as the power went out”—but splitting and reversing พอ…ก็ itself is not neutral.
Some speech places material before พอ as a topic or frame, but the paired clauses still retain X-before-Y internally. English permits several placements of as soon as; Thai พอ…ก็ is less freely rearranged.
When ก็ is present or omitted
Overt ก็ makes the pairing easy to hear and is favored when each half has its own subject, when the clauses are long, or when the immediate result is narratively important.
พอเจ้าหน้าที่ตรวจเอกสารครบแล้วระบบก็เปิดให้จองวันนัดได้ค่ะ
pho chaonathi truat ekkasan khrop laeo rabop ko poet hai chong wan nat dai kha
Once the staff have checked all the documents, the system allows an appointment to be booked. (formal-polite explanation, female speaker; ก็ clearly introduces the main result)
In short conversational directions, ก็ may be omitted:
พอถึงแล้วโทรมานะครับ
pho thueng laeo thora ma na khrap
Call me when you arrive. (ordinary-polite instruction, male speaker; compact pair without ก็)
Omission lightens the sentence; it does not reverse the relation. Do not omit พอ as well and assume juxtaposition always retains immediate sequence. ถึงแล้วโทรมา can work as a compact instruction, but in more complex discourse an explicit linker prevents a plain coordination or topic reading.
Immediate sequence is not duration or pure cause
For two simultaneous ongoing situations, ตอนที่ or ขณะที่ (formal) is usually a better frame. พอกำลังประชุมก็... is awkward when กำลังประชุม is intended merely as a continuing background; พอประชุมเสร็จก็... works because completion supplies a boundary.
ตอนที่เรากำลังประชุมอยู่ฝนตกหนักมากค่ะ
ton thi rao kamlang prachum yu fon tok nak mak kha
While we were meeting, it rained very heavily. (ordinary-polite report, female speaker; overlapping situations, not immediate succession)
พอประชุมเสร็จฝนก็หยุดพอดีค่ะ
pho prachum set fon ko yut phodi kha
Just as the meeting ended, the rain stopped. (ordinary-polite narrative, female speaker; meeting completion supplies a boundary)
The second example does not claim that the meeting caused the rain to stop. World knowledge blocks that inference. In พอหัวหน้าอนุมัติ ฝ่ายจัดซื้อก็สั่งของ, however, approval naturally enables ordering, so temporal succession supports a causal interpretation. Use an explicit causal linker when causation itself is the assertion.
Scope, negation, and aspect
Negation inside the first clause defines a negative condition as the trigger:
พอไม่มีใครตอบเขาก็ฝากข้อความไว้ครับ
pho mai mi khrai top khao ko fak khokhwam wai khrap
When no one answered, he left a message. (ordinary-polite narrative, male speaker; absence of an answer triggers the result)
Negation in the second clause instead denies the immediate outcome:
พอกลับถึงบ้านผมก็ไม่ได้พักเลยครับ
pho klap thueng ban phom ko mai dai phak loei khrap
As soon as I got home, I did not get any rest at all. (ordinary-polite complaint, male speaker; the main result is negated)
Completion markers can sharpen the boundary: พออ่านจบแล้วก็... “once [someone] has finished reading....” จะ may appear in a projected consequence, as in procedures or promises, but it is not required merely because English has will. Past narration similarly needs no general past auxiliary.
The initial clause usually falls within the scope of พอ, while ก็ introduces the assertion made about the following clause. Pausing after the first clause reinforces this grouping in speech.
Do not confuse temporal พอ with “enough”
พอ also means “be enough/sufficient”: เงินพอไหม “Is there enough money?” It can occur in พอที่จะ... “enough to...” and degree expressions such as ดีพอ “good enough.” Those are not temporal linkers.
เวลาที่เหลือพอที่จะตรวจรายงานอีกครั้งครับ
wela thi luea pho thi cha truat raingan ik khrang khrap
The remaining time is enough to check the report once more. (formal-polite statement, male speaker; พอ means sufficient)
In temporal พอรายงานเสร็จ ก็ส่งได้, a clause immediately follows พอ and a later event is released. In sufficiency เวลาพอ, พอ predicates adequacy of เวลา. English happens to use different words, but Thai distinguishes the meanings through syntax and context.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two colleagues coordinate a revised file.
พอแก้ตัวเลขเสร็จแล้วส่งไฟล์ให้ฉันได้ไหมคะ
pho kae tua lek set laeo song fai hai chan dai mai kha
Once you’ve corrected the figures, could you send me the file? (ordinary-polite request, female speaker; short frame without ก็)
ได้ครับ พอผมส่งแล้วคุณก็ตรวจหน้าสุดท้ายอีกทีนะครับ
dai khrap pho phom song laeo khun ko truat na sutthai ik thi na khrap
Sure. Once I’ve sent it, please check the last page again. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker; changed subjects explicit)
ถ้าไม่พบปัญหา พอหัวหน้าเซ็น เราก็เผยแพร่ได้เลยค่ะ
tha mai phop panha pho huana sen rao ko phoeiphrae dai loei kha
If we find no problems, as soon as the supervisor signs it, we can publish it. (ordinary-polite planning, female speaker; condition outside the immediate-sequence pair)
ตกลงครับ พอเผยแพร่แล้วผมจะแจ้งทีมสนับสนุน
toklong khrap pho phoeiphrae laeo phom cha chaeng thim sanapsanun
Agreed. Once it is published, I’ll notify the support team. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Reversing the paired markers
❌ ก็ถึงบ้านพอโทรหาแม่ค่ะ
Incorrect—the boundary must follow พอ and precede the ก็-clause.
✅ พอถึงบ้านก็โทรหาแม่ค่ะ
pho thueng ban ko thora ha mae kha
As soon as I got home, I called Mom. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)
2. Using พอ for simple overlap
❌ พอกำลังนอนอยู่เพื่อนก็โทรมาครับ
Awkward for intended ‘while I was sleeping’—the ongoing state is not a reached boundary.
✅ ตอนที่ผมกำลังนอนอยู่เพื่อนโทรมาครับ
ton thi phom kamlang non yu phuean thora ma khrap
While I was sleeping, a friend called. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker)
3. Omitting the changed subject
❌ พอลูกค้าเซ็นแล้วก็ส่งใบแจ้งหนี้ค่ะ
Ambiguous if accounting—not the client—is supposed to send the invoice.
✅ พอลูกค้าเซ็นแล้วฝ่ายบัญชีก็ส่งใบแจ้งหนี้ค่ะ
pho lukkha sen laeo fai banchi ko song bai chaeng ni kha
Once the client signs, accounting sends the invoice. (formal-polite procedure, female speaker)
4. Adding tense auxiliaries mechanically
❌ พอเขาได้มาถึงฉันก็ได้โทรหาหัวหน้าค่ะ
Incorrect for a neutral past sequence—ได้ is not required as an English-style past marker in either clause.
✅ พอเขามาถึงฉันก็โทรหาหัวหน้าค่ะ
pho khao ma thueng chan ko thora ha huana kha
As soon as he arrived, I called the supervisor. (ordinary-polite past narrative, female speaker)
5. Reading every พอ as temporal
❌ เงินพอก็จ่ายทันทีครับ
Wrong for intended ‘the money is sufficient’ as a complete statement—ก็ incorrectly suggests a following released event.
✅ เงินพอสำหรับค่าเดินทางครับ
ngoen pho samrap kha doen thang khrap
There is enough money for the travel costs. (ordinary-polite statement, male speaker; sufficiency predicate)
Key Takeaways
Use พอ + boundary clause + ก็ + result clause when reaching the first event promptly releases the second. Keep X before Y, make changed subjects explicit, and retain ก็ when it helps listeners find the main clause. Use an overlap frame for ongoing simultaneity, distinguish temporal พอ from sufficiency พอ, and place negation or aspect inside the clause whose meaning it modifies.
