Thai normally leaves a wh-expression in the position where its answer belongs: คุณนิดอ่านฉบับไหน “Which one did Khun Nit read?” At C2, however, word order cannot be described as “wh always stays in place.” Focus-sensitive expressions such as แค่ “only” and negative quantifiers such as ไม่มีใคร “nobody” can intervene between the interpretation of the question and its in-situ wh-expression, making the intended information question degraded or forcing another reading.
Thai repairs the configuration by placing the wh-phrase at the left edge with ที่, or by redesigning the question so that focus and the requested variable no longer compete. Prosody can license a separate echo or challenge reading, especially with final ทำไม, but that marked conversational use is not the same as a neutral wh-question.
The baseline: the wh-word occupies the answer slot
In an ordinary question, replace the wh-expression with a possible answer and the clause order remains stable.
| Question frame | Wh-expression | Answer substituted in same slot |
|---|---|---|
| คุณนิดอ่าน _ คะ | เอกสารฉบับไหน | เอกสารฉบับสีฟ้า |
| เขานัดประชุม _ ครับ | เมื่อไร | วันศุกร์ |
| ฝ่ายไหนส่งไฟล์ให้ _ คะ | ใคร | ฝ่ายบัญชี |
| คุณเลือก _ ครับ | กี่ชุด | สามชุด |
คุณนิดอ่านเอกสารฉบับไหนคะ
khun nit an ekkasan chabap nai kha
Which document did Khun Nit read? (polite, female question; neutral in-situ wh-phrase)
คุณนิดอ่านเอกสารฉบับสีฟ้าค่ะ
khun nit an ekkasan chabap si fa kha
Khun Nit read the blue document. (polite, female answer; answer occupies the same object slot)
This substitution test remains the best starting point. It also explains why Thai does not add ไหม to a wh-question: the wh-expression already specifies the requested dimension of information.
Focus adds a set of alternatives
A focus expression does not simply emphasize sound. It asks the listener to compare alternatives. แค่คุณนิด “only Khun Nit” contrasts Nit with other possible readers; ไม่มีใคร “nobody” quantifies over the set of possible people. The wh-expression simultaneously asks the question to range over another set, such as possible documents.
When a focus-sensitive phrase lies between the left-edge question interpretation and the in-situ wh-variable, the intended reading can deteriorate. The exact acceptability varies with focus type, wh-type, discourse, and prosody, but the neutral contrasts below are robust enough to guide production.
❌ มีแค่คุณนิดคนเดียวอ่านเอกสารฉบับไหนจบคะ
Degraded as the intended neutral question 'Which document did only Khun Nit finish reading?'—the only-subject intervenes before the in-situ wh-object.
✅ เอกสารฉบับไหนที่มีแค่คุณนิดคนเดียวอ่านจบคะ
ekkasan chabap nai thi mi khae khun nit khon diao an chop kha
Which document is it that only Khun Nit finished reading? (polite, female question; left-edge wh-phrase plus ที่ avoids intervention)
The repair resembles a reduced cleft or headless relative: the wh-phrase is established first, and ที่ introduces the proposition that identifies it. This order is more structurally marked than ordinary wh-in-situ, so use it when the focus configuration motivates it—not as a universal replacement.
Negative quantifiers can change the reading
ไม่มีใคร is particularly instructive. Under negation, an in-situ ใคร may be interpreted as a non-interrogative indefinite, roughly “anyone,” rather than as a request to identify a person. With an object wh-phrase, the whole sentence may become difficult to read as the intended question.
❌ ไม่มีใครเข้าใจรายงานฉบับไหนคะ
Degraded as 'Which report does nobody understand?'—the negative quantifier precedes the in-situ wh-phrase and encourages a non-question interpretation.
✅ รายงานฉบับไหนที่ไม่มีใครเข้าใจคะ
raingan chabap nai thi mai mi khrai khao chai kha
Which report is it that nobody understands? (polite, female question; wh-phrase fronted before the negative quantifier)
The corrected form does not mean that every negative Thai question fronts its wh-word. Ordinary negation without an intervening quantificational subject remains compatible with in-situ wh.
คุณไม่เข้าใจตรงไหนครับ
khun mai khao chai trong nai khrap
Which part don't you understand? (polite, male question; ordinary negation with in-situ locative wh)
ใครยังไม่ได้รับเอกสารครับ
khrai yang mai dai rap ekkasan khrap
Who still hasn't received the documents? (polite, male question; wh-subject itself precedes negation)
The relevant issue is configuration and interpretation, not the mere presence of ไม่.
D-linked wh-phrases are not automatically immune
A phrase such as หนังสือเล่มไหน “which book” is discourse-linked: it asks the listener to choose from a contextually relevant set. That rich content helps reference, but it does not guarantee that the phrase can remain below every focus intervener.
หนังสือเล่มไหนที่ไม่มีนักศึกษาคนไหนยืมคะ
nangsue lem nai thi mai mi naksueksa khon nai yuem kha
Which book is it that no student borrowed? (polite, female question; explicit left-edge choice set)
คุณเลือกหนังสือเล่มไหนครับ
khun lueak nangsue lem nai khrap
Which book did you choose? (polite, male question; no intervener, so ordinary in-situ order)
Classifier-bearing wh-phrases make the alternative set precise. เล่มไหน selects among books; ฉบับไหน selects among documents or editions; กี่ชุด asks for a quantity of sets. See classifier questions.
ทำไม: neutral reason versus final challenge
ทำไม normally appears before the clause or near its left edge in a neutral request for a reason. A final ทำไม is possible in (informal) speech, but often carries echo, surprise, objection, or challenge prosody.
ทำไมเขาส่งแค่ไฟล์เดียวคะ
thammai khao song khae fai diao kha
Why did they send only one file? (polite, female question; neutral request for a reason)
เขาส่งมาแค่ไฟล์เดียวทำไมคะ
khao song ma khae fai diao thammai kha
Why did they send only one file, though? (polite but conversational female question; final ทำไม conveys surprise or challenge)
The second is not simply the first with free word order. Its prosody normally treats the preceding proposition as already salient—perhaps the speaker has just discovered the single file—and questions why that surprising situation holds. In a neutral written questionnaire, prefer initial ทำไม.
Focus adjacency and the shape of the answer
Focus particles associate with nearby material and evoke alternatives. Misplacing them can change what the question contrasts.
คุณส่งให้ลูกค้าแค่เอกสารฉบับแก้ราคาค่ะ
khun song hai luk kha khae ekkasan chabap kae rakha kha
You sent the client only the document with the revised price. (polite, female statement; แค่ associates with the adjacent object phrase)
ใครเป็นคนเดียวที่ส่งเอกสารให้ลูกค้าครับ
khrai pen khon diao thi song ekkasan hai luk kha khrap
Who was the only person who sent the documents to the client? (polite, male question; cleft-like frame makes the focused alternative explicit)
The first example shows local association between แค่ and its object. The second is a marked focus question, not a neutral equivalent of ใครส่งเอกสาร. A fitting answer must resolve the relevant alternative set.
ส่งแค่ฉบับที่แก้ราคาแล้วค่ะ
song khae chabap thi kae rakha laeo kha
I sent only the version with the revised price. (polite, female answer; zero subject and noun are recoverable, focused classifier phrase retained)
The speaker can omit “I” and “document,” but cannot omit the focused alternative that answers the question. Zero anaphora follows recoverability; focus requires an overt or prosodically represented contrast.
Question focus across turns
In dialogue, the question installs both a topic and an open slot. The answer normally expresses the value of that slot and omits background material.
ฝ่ายไหนยังไม่ได้ส่งรายงานครับ
fai nai yang mai dai song raingan khrap
Which department still hasn't submitted the report? (polite, male question; department is the requested alternative)
เหลือแค่ฝ่ายจัดซื้อค่ะ ฝ่ายอื่นส่งครบแล้ว
luea khae fai chat sue kha fai uen song khrop laeo
Only procurement remains; every other department has submitted it. (polite, female answer; focused department explicit, report omitted)
The answer does not need a full sentence mirroring English “The procurement department has not submitted the report.” It preserves the contrastive participant and omits the recoverable object.
มีประเด็นไหนบ้างที่ต้องให้เฉพาะฝ่ายกฎหมายตรวจครับ
mi praden nai bang thi tong hai chapho fai kotmai truat khrap
Which issues need to be reviewed only by legal? (polite, male question; existential frame separates the choice set from its focus description)
ประเด็นเรื่องลิขสิทธิ์ค่ะ ส่วนเงื่อนไขอื่นฝ่ายสัญญาตรวจได้
praden rueang likkhasit kha suan ngueankhai uen fai sanya truat dai
The copyright issue. As for the other conditions, the contracts team can review them. (polite, female answer; requested focus followed by contrastive topic)
Substitution guide
| Communicative goal | Preferred frame | Example slot |
|---|---|---|
| neutral request | [clause ... WH] | คุณเลือก [ฉบับไหน] |
| wh-subject | [WH] + predicate | [ใคร] ส่งไฟล์ |
| focus intervenes before wh-object | [WH] + ที่ + [focused clause] | [ฉบับไหน] ที่มีแค่คุณนิดอ่าน |
| negative quantifier intervenes | [WH] + ที่ + [negative clause] | [ฉบับไหน] ที่ไม่มีใครเข้าใจ |
| surprised echo/challenge | [salient proposition] + WH + marked prosody | ส่งมาแค่ฉบับเดียว [ทำไม] |
These are production defaults, not a claim that every speaker assigns identical judgments to every invented sentence. Context, prosody, and the lexical focus item can change acceptability. The stable pedagogical distinction is between neutral information seeking and marked echo/challenge readings.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ทำไมมีแค่ทีมกรุงเทพฯ ที่ส่งข้อมูลทันครับ
thammai mi khae thim krungthep thi song khomun than khrap
Why was only the Bangkok team able to submit the data on time? (polite, male question; initial ทำไม scopes over the focused proposition)
เพราะทีมอื่นเข้าใช้ระบบไม่ได้ค่ะ แต่ยังไม่ทราบว่าเกิดปัญหาที่จุดไหน
phro thim uen khao chai rabop mai dai kha tae yang mai sap wa koet panha thi chut nai
Because the other teams couldn't access the system, but we still don't know at which point the problem occurred. (polite, female reply; focused reason first, later in-situ wh inside an embedded unknown)
The first question asks for a reason concerning the whole only-team proposition. The reply supplies that reason, then opens a separate unresolved location variable.
Common Mistakes
1. Fronting a wh-object in English order without ที่
❌ เอกสารฉบับไหนคุณนิดอ่านจบคะ
Incorrect as the intended neutral question—bare English-style wh-fronting lacks the Thai cleft linker and discourse setup.
✅ คุณนิดอ่านเอกสารฉบับไหนจบคะ
khun nit an ekkasan chabap nai chop kha
Which document did Khun Nit finish reading? (polite, female question; ordinary in-situ order)
2. Adding ไหม to a wh-question
❌ คุณจะประชุมเมื่อไรไหมครับ
Incorrect—the open wh-question เมื่อไร and yes/no particle ไหม request incompatible answer types.
✅ คุณจะประชุมเมื่อไรครับ
khun cha prachum muearai khrap
When will you meet? (polite, male question)
3. Leaving the wh-object below an only-subject
❌ มีแค่ฝ่ายบัญชีแก้ตัวเลขชุดไหนได้คะ
Degraded for the intended neutral choice question because แค่ฝ่ายบัญชี intervenes before the wh-object.
✅ ตัวเลขชุดไหนที่มีแค่ฝ่ายบัญชีแก้ได้คะ
tua lek chut nai thi mi khae fai banchi kae dai kha
Which set of figures can only accounting correct? (polite, female question; fronted wh-phrase plus ที่)
4. Treating final ทำไม as a neutral written default
❌ ผู้ตอบเลือกข้อนี้ทำไม
Poor neutral survey wording—final ทำไม invites a conversational echo or challenge reading.
✅ ทำไมผู้ตอบจึงเลือกข้อนี้
thammai phutop chueng lueak kho ni
Why did the respondent choose this option? (formal survey or research prose; neutral reason question)
Key Takeaways
- Ordinary Thai wh-expressions remain in the answer position; replacing wh with an answer reveals the basic order.
- Focus-sensitive phrases and negative quantifiers can intervene and degrade the intended in-situ question.
- Wh + ที่ provides a cleft-like repair that places the requested variable before the intervener.
- Final ทำไม can survive as an informal echo or challenge, but its marked prosody and discourse force differ from a neutral reason question.
- Answers retain the focused alternative and freely omit background participants that remain recoverable.
