A Thai cleft-like sentence such as คุณลินคือคนที่ติดต่อมา places a candidate first, then identifies that candidate as “the person who contacted us.” It is useful when the discourse has opened alternatives—Lin or somebody else, Tuesday or Wednesday, this file or another—and the speaker selects or corrects one of them.
The construction resembles English It was Lin who..., but its parts remain ordinary Thai grammar: คือ identifies two expressions, while ที่ introduces a noun-modifying clause. There is no dummy counterpart of English it. The structural คือ…ที่ guide teaches the basic form; this page focuses on how it packages information across a conversation.
Focus first, identifying description second
The dependable (ordinary-to-formal) frame is focused value + คือ + head noun + ที่ + clause.
คุณลินคือคนที่ติดต่อฝ่ายกฎหมายเมื่อเช้าค่ะ
khun lin khue khon thi titto fai kotmai muea chao kha
Khun Lin is the person who contacted the legal department this morning. (ordinary polite identification, female speaker)
แฟ้มสีเขียวคือแฟ้มที่ต้องนำเข้าประชุมครับ
faem si khiao khue faem thi tong nam khao prachum khrap
The green folder is the one that needs to be taken into the meeting. (ordinary polite instruction, male speaker)
วันพุธคือวันที่คณะกรรมการสะดวกที่สุดค่ะ
wan phut khue wan thi khana kammakan saduak thi sut kha
Wednesday is the day that suits the committee best. (formal-neutral scheduling, female speaker)
The focused value is new, corrective, or contrastive. The phrase after คือ classifies its role: คนที่... for a person, แฟ้มที่... for a file, and วันที่... for a day. An overt head is especially valuable because ที่ has several other functions in Thai.
The relative clause represents the description already available to the listeners. In the first example, everyone may know that someone contacted legal; the new contribution is that the person was Khun Lin. In writing, both halves can be fully explicit. In speech, context can make some internal arguments recoverable.
Plain assertion versus corrective identification
Compare a neutral event report with an answer that resolves a disputed identity.
ฝ่ายเทคนิคแก้ระบบเมื่อคืนครับ
fai theknik kae rabop muea khuen khrap
The technical team fixed the system last night. (ordinary polite event report, male speaker)
ฝ่ายเทคนิคคือฝ่ายที่แก้ระบบเมื่อคืนครับ ไม่ใช่บริษัทภายนอก
fai theknik khue fai thi kae rabop muea khuen khrap mai chai borisat phainok
The technical team was the team that fixed the system last night, not an outside company. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)
The first sentence can introduce an entire event. The second treats “the party that fixed the system” as given and contrasts candidates. English often signals the same packaging through stress alone or an it-cleft. Thai may use prosody too, but คือ + head + ที่ makes the identifying relation overt.
This construction normally presents the focused value as the relevant answer, and a singular identifying phrase often invites an exhaustive “that one” inference. คือ itself does not mean “only,” but if three employees all helped and Lin was merely one of them, say คุณลินเป็นคนหนึ่งที่ช่วยแก้ปัญหา “Khun Lin was one of the people who helped solve the problem.” To state literal uniqueness, use คนเดียว or otherwise exclude alternatives.
รหัสชุดนี้คือรหัสชุดเดียวที่ใช้ยืนยันรายการได้ค่ะ
rahat chut ni khue rahat chut diao thi chai yuenyan raikan dai kha
This code is the only code that can confirm the transaction. (formal-neutral instruction, female speaker; uniqueness explicit)
| Focused value | Identifying phrase | Typical discourse question |
|---|---|---|
| person | X คือคนที่ + clause | Who did it? |
| organization/team | X คือฝ่าย/บริษัทที่ + clause | Which party was responsible? |
| countable object | X คือ noun/classifier ที่ + clause | Which one is relevant? |
| time | X คือวัน/เวลาที่ + clause | When is the identified event? |
| place | X คือห้อง/จุด/สถานที่ที่ + clause | Where is the identified event? |
| unique answer | X คือ head + เดียวที่ + clause | Which is the only one? |
Relative-clause gaps and recoverable material
The noun before ที่ supplies a participant interpreted inside the relative clause. Thai does not normally repeat that same participant as a resumptive pronoun in a simple subject or object relative.
ใบเสนอราคาฉบับล่าสุดคือฉบับที่ลูกค้าเลือกค่ะ
bai sanoe rakha chabap lasut khue chabap thi luk kha lueak kha
The latest quotation is the one the customer selected. (formal-neutral report, female speaker; object gap after เลือก)
The understood object of เลือก is ฉบับ. Adding มัน after เลือก would fill the role twice. This is structural omission inside a relative clause. Elsewhere, ordinary zero anaphora is licensed only when the conversation makes the participant recoverable.
ห้องรับรองคือห้องที่ลูกค้าจะรออยู่ครับ
hong raprong khue hong thi luk kha cha ro yu khrap
The reception room is the room where the customer will wait. (ordinary polite explanation, male speaker; place identified)
Here ห้อง is understood as the location associated with รออยู่. Thai does not add English in which word for word. More complex relationships may require a preposition or another strategy, as explained in subject and object relatives.
Given material inside the relative clause can disappear in an answer, but the identifying head should remain when it prevents ambiguity.
คุณดาวคือคนที่ส่งมาค่ะ
khun dao khue khon thi song ma kha
Khun Dao is the person who sent it. (ordinary polite reply, female speaker; object recoverable from context)
This is natural only after the interlocutors have established what was sent. Thai omission is discourse-sensitive, not evidence that objects are absent from the grammar.
Prosody, particles, and negative correction
In speech, the focused value normally receives prominence through timing and pitch appropriate to its lexical tones; writers do not insert spaces inside Thai words to imitate stress. A particle can strengthen a correction, but it stays next to the expression it focuses.
ห้องด้านในนี่แหละคือห้องที่เก็บต้นฉบับค่ะ
hong dan nai ni lae khue hong thi kep tonchabap kha
This inner room is exactly the room where the originals are kept. (informal-to-ordinary emphatic identification, female speaker)
The (informal) sequence นี่แหละ makes the selected room vivid. Without it, the sentence remains grammatical and more neutral. The general principles of spoken prominence are covered under focus prosody.
Negative correction uses ไม่ใช่, never ไม่คือ.
คุณบอยไม่ใช่คนที่อนุมัติค่าใช้จ่ายครับ เป็นคุณมน
khun boi mai chai khon thi anumat kha chai chai khrap pen khun mon
Khun Boy isn't the person who approved the expense; it was Khun Mon. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)
If ไม่ occurs inside the ที่-clause, it negates the event rather than the identity: คุณบอยคือคนที่ไม่ได้อนุมัติ... identifies Boy as the person who did not approve it. Scope follows position.
Cleft direction versus pseudo-cleft direction
The two orders answer related but different information-flow needs.
คุณมนคือคนที่นำเสนอแผนสำรองค่ะ
khun mon khue khon thi nam sanoe phaen samrong kha
Khun Mon is the person who presented the backup plan. (formal-neutral focus-first identification, female speaker)
คนที่นำเสนอแผนสำรองคือคุณมนค่ะ
khon thi nam sanoe phaen samrong khue khun mon kha
The person who presented the backup plan was Khun Mon. (formal-neutral background-first identification, female speaker)
The first puts คุณมน first as the candidate under correction. The second opens with the known role and delays the answer until after คือ. The second is the pseudo-cleft direction developed on the separate pseudo-cleft page. Thai can use either because ordering is a resource for managing given and new information, not a mandatory copy of English clause shape.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two staff members are checking who has authority to sign:
คุณวิทย์คือคนที่เซ็นเอกสารชุดนี้ใช่ไหมคะ
khun wit khue khon thi sen ekkasan chut ni chai mai kha
Khun Wit is the person who signs this document set, right? (ordinary polite confirmation, female speaker)
ไม่ใช่ครับ คุณรตีคือผู้ที่มีอำนาจลงนาม
mai chai khrap khun rati khue phu thi mi amnat long nam
No. Khun Rati is the person authorized to sign. (formal-neutral polite correction, male speaker)
แล้วตราสีน้ำเงินคือตราที่ต้องใช้หรือเปล่าคะ
laeo tra si nam ngoen khue tra thi tong chai rue plao kha
And is the blue stamp the one we need to use? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ใช่ครับ ตราสีน้ำเงินคือตราเดียวที่ใช้กับแบบฟอร์มนี้ได้
chai khrap tra si nam ngoen khue tra diao thi chai kap baep fom ni dai
Yes. The blue stamp is the only one that can be used with this form. (formal-neutral polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English dummy it
❌ มันคือคุณรตีที่ลงนามค่ะ
Incorrect for neutral identity focus: มัน would require a genuine referent and is not an English-style dummy it.
✅ คุณรตีคือผู้ที่ลงนามในหนังสือฉบับนี้ค่ะ
khun rati khue phu thi long nam nai nangsue chabap ni kha
Khun Rati is the person who signed this letter. (formal polite identification, female speaker)
2. Leaving the identifying class unclear
❌ วันอังคารคือที่เราจะส่งสัญญาครับ
Incorrect in this frame—the time head วัน should introduce the ที่-clause.
✅ วันอังคารคือวันที่เราจะส่งสัญญาฉบับแก้ไขครับ
wan angkhan khue wan thi rao cha song sanya chabap kaekhai khrap
Tuesday is the day we'll send the revised contract. (formal-neutral scheduling, male speaker)
3. Repeating the relative-clause object
❌ เครื่องนี้คือเครื่องที่ช่างซ่อมมันเมื่อวานค่ะ
Incorrect in a simple object relative: เครื่อง already supplies the understood object of ซ่อม.
✅ เครื่องนี้คือเครื่องที่ช่างซ่อมเสร็จเมื่อวานค่ะ
khrueang ni khue khrueang thi chang som set muea wan kha
This is the machine that the technician finished repairing yesterday. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
4. Using ไม่คือ for negative identity
❌ คุณนพไม่คือคนที่จองห้องครับ
Incorrect—negative identification is built with ไม่ใช่.
✅ คุณนพไม่ใช่คนที่จองห้องสัมมนาครับ
khun nop mai chai khon thi chong hong sammana khrap
Khun Nop isn't the person who booked the seminar room. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)
5. Forcing a cleft where no identity is contrasted
❌ อากาศวันนี้คืออากาศที่ร้อนมากค่ะ
Unnatural as a neutral weather report—the identifying frame implies an unsupported choice among types or occasions.
✅ วันนี้อากาศร้อนมากค่ะ
wan ni akat ron mak kha
It's very hot today. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; direct property predicate)
Key Takeaways
- X คือ head ที่... puts the selected identity first and describes its discourse role second.
- The construction becomes useful when a previous question, assumption, or correction makes alternatives salient.
- Suggested uniqueness comes from context; use คนเดียว, อันเดียว, or another explicit expression for literal uniqueness.
- Thai has no dummy cleft it, and simple relatives do not repeat their subject or object gap with a pronoun.
- Omit established participants only when the listener can recover them; state a changed or contrastive participant.
