Thai can highlight one participant as the person, thing, time, or place that fits a description by combining identifying คือ with a noun phrase containing a ที่-clause. A dependable pattern is focus + คือ + head noun + ที่ + clause: “X is the person/thing/time/place that….” It often translates naturally as an English cleft, but Thai does not insert a dummy equivalent of English it.
The label คือ…ที่ is useful shorthand, not the name of one indivisible marker. คือ performs identification; ที่ introduces a clause modifying an overt head such as คน, อัน, วัน, or ห้อง. Keeping those two jobs distinct prevents several common learner errors.
Identifying the participant that fits the clause
Start with the highlighted participant, then identify it as the relevant person or thing.
คุณเมย์คือคนที่ส่งเอกสารมาเมื่อเช้าค่ะ
khun me khue khon thi song ekkasan ma muea chao kha
Khun May is the person who sent the documents this morning. (ordinary polite identification, female speaker; person focus)
กล่องสีเทาคือกล่องที่ต้องส่งกลับครับ
klong si thao khue klong thi tong song klap khrap
The gray box is the one that must be sent back. (ordinary polite instruction, male speaker; object focus)
ชั้นสามคือชั้นที่ฝ่ายบัญชีย้ายไปอยู่ค่ะ
chan sam khue chan thi fai banchi yai pai yu kha
The third floor is the floor that accounting moved to. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker; place focus)
The head noun gives the semantic role: คนที่... denotes a person, กล่องที่... a box, and ชั้นที่... a floor. English may use the one who/that or an it was X that... sentence. Thai builds an identifying noun phrase rather than an English dummy-subject frame.
For the internal structure and different roles of ที่, see the relative ที่ guide.
For stronger conversational focus, particles such as นี่แหละ “this/this one precisely” and นี่เอง “this very one” can be added where the context supports them.
ร้านนี้แหละคือร้านที่ผมตามหาครับ
ran ni lae khue ran thi phom tam ha khrap
This is exactly the shop I've been looking for. (informal-to-ordinary emphatic identification, male speaker)
คุณอรนี่เองคือคนที่แก้ปัญหาให้ทีมค่ะ
khun on ni eng khue khon thi kae panha hai thim kha
Khun On herself is the person who solved the problem for the team. (ordinary emphatic identification, female speaker)
นี่แหละ is vivid and conversational; นี่เอง is more explanatory and can occur in careful speech or writing. Neither particle is obligatory, and neither changes the verb form.
Focus on time, place, and selection
The same structure can identify a time or a member of a choice set.
วันศุกร์คือวันที่เราจะทดสอบระบบใหม่ค่ะ
wan suk khue wan thi rao cha thotsop rabop mai kha
Friday is the day when we'll test the new system. (formal-neutral planning, female speaker; time focus)
ห้องริมสวนคือห้องที่ลูกค้าเลือกไว้ครับ
hong rim suan khue hong thi luk kha lueak wai khrap
The garden-side room is the room the customer selected. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; place/item focus)
ข้อเสนอที่สองคือข้อที่คณะกรรมการรับไว้พิจารณาค่ะ
khosanoe thi song khue kho thi khana kammakan rap wai phicharana kha
The second proposal is the one the committee accepted for consideration. (formal report, female speaker; selection from a set)
The construction often suggests uniqueness or contrast because it supplies the identity that satisfies a known description. That effect comes from the discourse and the definite noun phrase, not from คือ automatically meaning “only.” Add เท่านั้น only when literal exclusivity is intended.
บัตรใบนี้คือบัตรใบเดียวที่ใช้เปิดประตูหลังได้ครับ
bat bai ni khue bat bai diao thi chai poet pratu lang dai khrap
This is the only card that can open the rear door. (formal-neutral restriction, male speaker; explicit exclusivity with ใบเดียว)
The modifier ใบเดียว makes the exclusivity explicit. In ordinary instructions, ใช้ได้เฉพาะบัตรใบนี้ “only this card can be used” is often more direct. Cleft-like focus is useful when correcting or contrasting identities, not a mandatory template for every emphasis.
Minimal contrast: plain report versus identification
คุณพิมโทรแจ้งลูกค้าเมื่อวานค่ะ
khun phim tho chaeng luk kha muea wan kha
Khun Phim called to notify the customer yesterday. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; plain event)
คุณพิมคือคนที่โทรแจ้งลูกค้าเมื่อวานค่ะ
khun phim khue khon thi tho chaeng luk kha muea wan kha
Khun Phim is the person who called to notify the customer yesterday. (ordinary polite identification, female speaker; participant highlighted)
The plain clause answers “What happened?” The second can answer “Who was it?” It divides the message into a highlighted identity and a clause that characterizes that identity.
Thai also has lighter focus strategies. คุณพิมนั่นแหละโทรมา or คุณพิมเป็นคนโทรมา may be more conversational. Therefore, do not replace every English cleft with คือ...ที่. Choose it when explicit identification is the point.
| Focus type | Productive frame | Model |
|---|---|---|
Negative and corrective focus
Negative identification uses ไม่ใช่, not ไม่คือ. One natural corrective frame is ไม่ใช่ + X + ที่ + clause, especially when the rejected candidate is already under discussion.
ไม่ใช่คุณนิดที่ส่งข้อความมาค่ะ เป็นคุณพลอย
mai chai khun nit thi song khokhwam ma kha pen khun phloi
It wasn't Khun Nit who sent the message; it was Khun Ploy. (ordinary polite correction, female speaker)
เอกสารชุดนี้ไม่ใช่ชุดที่ผมตรวจเมื่อวานครับ
ekkasan chut ni mai chai chut thi phom truat muea wan khrap
This document set isn't the one I checked yesterday. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)
The first example has no dummy “it.” ไม่ใช่คุณนิด rejects one focused person, and ที่ส่งข้อความมา supplies the relevant event. In the second, ชุดที่... remains a full noun phrase after ไม่ใช่.
Negation within the relative clause gives a different meaning:
คุณนิดคือคนที่ไม่ได้เข้าประชุมเมื่อวานครับ
khun nit khue khon thi mai dai khao prachum muea wan khrap
Khun Nit is the person who didn't attend yesterday's meeting. (formal-neutral identification, male speaker; negation inside the identifying clause)
Compare ไม่ใช่คุณนิดที่เข้าประชุม “it wasn't Khun Nit who attended” with คุณนิดคือคนที่ไม่ได้เข้าประชุม “Khun Nit is the person who did not attend.” Word order determines which proposition is denied.
Not identity, location, existence, or property
Cleft-like focus does not replace the ordinary predicate system. คุณพิมอยู่ชั้นสาม locates her; ชั้นสามมีห้องประชุม introduces a room; ห้องกว้าง states a property. None requires a dummy subject or an identifying คือ unless the speaker deliberately reframes the message as an identity question.
ห้องที่เราเลือกกว้างและเงียบค่ะ
hong thi rao lueak kwang lae ngiap kha
The room we chose is spacious and quiet. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; direct property predicates, not a cleft)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Coworkers are identifying who changed a booking:
ใครคือคนที่เปลี่ยนเวลานัดคะ
khrai khue khon thi plian wela nat kha
Who is the person who changed the appointment time? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
คุณตั้มคือคนที่โทรไปขอเปลี่ยนครับ
khun tam khue khon thi tho pai kho plian khrap
Khun Tum is the one who called to request the change. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
แล้ววันจันทร์คือวันที่ลูกค้าตกลงไว้ใช่ไหมคะ
laeo wan chan khue wan thi luk kha toklong wai chai mai kha
And Monday is the day the customer agreed to, right? (ordinary polite confirmation, female speaker)
ใช่ครับ วันจันทร์นี่แหละคือวันที่สะดวกที่สุด
chai khrap wan chan ni lae khue wan thi saduak thi sut
Yes. Monday is precisely the most convenient day. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; emphatic identification)
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English dummy it into Thai
❌ มันคือคุณแก้วที่ส่งรายงานค่ะ
Incorrect for a neutral English-style ‘it was Khun Kaeo’; มัน would need a genuine referent.
✅ คุณแก้วคือคนที่ส่งรายงานฉบับล่าสุดค่ะ
khun kaeo khue khon thi song raingan chabap lasut kha
Khun Kaeo is the person who sent the latest report. (ordinary polite identification, female speaker)
2. Omitting the identifying head after คือ
❌ คุณเอกคือที่โทรมาเมื่อเช้าครับ
Incorrect for the intended person focus; ที่ needs an appropriate head such as คน in this frame.
✅ คุณเอกคือคนที่โทรมาถามเรื่องสัญญาครับ
khun ek khue khon thi tho ma tham rueang sanya khrap
Khun Ek is the person who called to ask about the contract. (ordinary polite identification, male speaker)
3. Treating ที่ as part of the focused name
❌ ที่คุณฝนคือเตรียมห้องประชุมค่ะ
Incorrect—the relative marker belongs after a head noun, not before the focused name in this pattern.
✅ คุณฝนคือคนที่เตรียมห้องประชุมชั้นบนค่ะ
khun fon khue khon thi triam hong prachum chan bon kha
Khun Fon is the person who prepared the upstairs meeting room. (ordinary polite identification, female speaker)
4. Forming negative focus with ไม่คือ
❌ ไม่คือผมที่ปิดระบบครับ
Incorrect—negative identification uses ไม่ใช่.
✅ ไม่ใช่ผมที่ปิดระบบเมื่อคืนนะครับ
mai chai phom thi pit rabop muea khuen na khrap
It wasn't me who shut down the system last night. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)
5. Forcing the focus frame onto a property
❌ ห้องนี้คือเงียบที่สุดค่ะ
Incorrect—เงียบ is a property predicate, not an identifying noun phrase after คือ.
✅ ห้องมุมด้านในเงียบกว่าห้องอื่นค่ะ
hong mum dan nai ngiap kwa hong uen kha
The inner corner room is quieter than the others. (ordinary polite comparison, female speaker; direct property predicate)
Key Takeaways
- X คือ head noun ที่... identifies X as the participant, time, or place fitting a clause.
- คือ and ที่ keep separate jobs; they are not one discontinuous English-style cleft marker.
- Thai has no obligatory dummy counterpart of English cleft it and often uses lighter focus strategies.
- ไม่ใช่ X ที่... rejects the focused identity; negation inside the ที่-clause has different scope.
