ส่วน and ขณะที่ for Balanced Contrast

Thai can balance two alternatives without framing either as a concession. ส่วน pivots to a second contrasted topic—“as for B / whereas B.” ขณะที่ literally establishes “the time during which,” but in formal comparison it can align two simultaneous or opposing situations—“while / whereas.” Their information structures differ even when English uses whereas for both.

For the temporal system beyond this comparison, see while and overlapping events.

ส่วน: pivot to another topic

ส่วน + noun phrase introduces the next member of an active comparison set. A first topic is described, then ส่วน B tells listeners that the following comment belongs to B. The construction is especially useful for distributing roles, preferences, results, or properties across participants.

คุณนิดดูแลลูกค้า ส่วนผมจะตรวจเอกสารครับ

khun nit dulae luk kha suan phom cha truat ekkasan khrap

Khun Nit will look after the clients, while I will check the documents. (ordinary polite division of roles, male speaker)

ห้องด้านหน้าใช้รับแขก ส่วนห้องด้านหลังเป็นที่เก็บของค่ะ

hong dan na chai rap khaek suan hong dan lang pen thi kep khong kha

The front room is used for receiving guests, whereas the back room is for storage. (ordinary polite comparison, female speaker)

The phrase after ส่วน is a topic, not automatically a subject or object. Its comment supplies the relationship. That is why ส่วนเรื่องงบประมาณ ผมจะคุยกับผู้จัดการเอง can mean “As for the budget, I’ll speak to the manager myself.”

ส่วนเรื่องกำหนดส่ง ผมขอเช็กกับฝ่ายผลิตก่อนครับ

suan rueang kamnot song phom kho chek kap fai phalit kon khrap

As for the deadline, let me check with Production first. (ordinary polite topic pivot, male speaker)

💡
Use ส่วน only when a contrast set is active or being constructed. A lone perspective such as “for me” normally takes สำหรับ, not ส่วน, unless another person's view is contrasted.

ขณะที่: simultaneous frame and formal whereas

The core of ขณะที่ is temporal: “at the time that / while.” The situations overlap. This temporal alignment supports a formal contrastive extension: if A and B hold over the same comparison frame but diverge, English often translates ขณะที่ as “whereas.”

ขณะที่ฉันกำลังคุยกับลูกค้า ผู้จัดการก็โทรเข้ามาค่ะ

khana thi chan kamlang khui kap luk kha phu chatkan ko tho khao ma kha

While I was talking with a customer, the manager called. (ordinary polite simultaneous report, female speaker)

ยอดขายในประเทศลดลง ขณะที่ยอดส่งออกเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างต่อเนื่อง

yot khai nai prathet lot long khana thi yot song ok phoem khuen yang tonueang

Domestic sales declined, whereas exports increased continuously. (formal analytical writing)

In the second example, literal clock-time overlap is backgrounded; the crucial point is that both trends occupy the same reporting period and move in opposite directions.

กลุ่มทดลองมีคะแนนสูงขึ้น ขณะที่กลุ่มควบคุมแทบไม่เปลี่ยนแปลง

klum thotlong mi khanaen sung khuen khana thi klum khuapkhum thaep mai plianplaeng

The experimental group's scores increased, whereas the control group showed almost no change. (academic register)

Substitution and discourse choice

LinkerOrganizes the relation asBest fit
ส่วน B, commenttopic A versus topic Broles, preferences, categories
A ขณะที่ Baligned situationssimultaneity or formal comparison
A แต่ Bgeneral oppositionunbalanced contrast or surprise
สำหรับ B, commentperspective/domainevaluation without necessary contrast

พี่สาวชอบเที่ยวทะเล ส่วนน้องชายชอบเดินป่าค่ะ

phi sao chop thiao thale suan nong chai chop doen pa kha

The older sister likes seaside trips, while the younger brother likes hiking. (ordinary polite balanced preference contrast, female speaker)

ต้นทุนเพิ่มขึ้น แต่บริษัทไม่ปรับราคาครับ

ton thun phoem khuen tae borisat mai prap rakha khrap

Costs rose, but the company did not raise prices. (formal-neutral contrast, male voice; resistance to expectation)

The แต่ example does not merely distribute two topics: rising costs make a price increase expected, and the second clause opposes that inference. ส่วน would instead present “costs” and “the company” as comparison topics, which is not the intended logic.

Balanced parallelism and omission

With ส่วน, repeat enough structure to reveal the comparison dimension. Shared material may be omitted when the two comments are unmistakably parallel.

แพ็กเกจแรกพักได้สองคืน ส่วนแพ็กเกจที่สองสามคืนค่ะ

phaekket raek phak dai song khuen suan phaekket thi song sam khuen kha

The first package includes two nights, while the second includes three. (ordinary polite comparison, female speaker; repeated predicate omitted)

With contrastive ขณะที่, full clauses are preferred in careful prose because the construction compares propositions. A changed subject is overt. Temporal ขณะที่ can precede its clause and the main clause.

ขณะที่พนักงานส่วนใหญ่ทำงานจากบ้าน ทีมไอทียังต้องเข้าบริษัททุกวันครับ

khana thi phanakngan suan yai tham ngan chak ban thim ai thi yang tong khao borisat thuk wan khrap

While most employees work from home, the IT team still has to come to the office every day. (formal-neutral comparison, male voice)

💡
ขณะที่ does not conjugate for past or present. Overlap comes from clause meaning and time context; กำลัง can make an ongoing event explicit when needed.

Punctuation and register

ส่วน is common in conversation and writing. ขณะที่ is ordinary as a temporal linker but its abstract “whereas” use is more common in formal, journalistic, and academic comparison. A comma is optional after a short first clause; use punctuation to clarify long spans, not to copy English mechanically.

Sometimes ส่วน appears without an overt first-half linker because the preceding sentence has already established A. Sometimes a report begins a new sentence with ขณะที่ to attach a countertrend to the previous proposition. In both cases, discourse supplies the missing comparison member.

ยอดผู้โดยสารทางรถไฟเพิ่มขึ้นร้อยละสิบ ส่วนทางรถโดยสารลดลงเล็กน้อยค่ะ

yot phu doisan thang rotfai phoem khuen roi la sip suan thang rot doisan lot long lek noi kha

Rail passenger numbers rose by ten percent, while bus travel declined slightly. (formal report, female voice)

Ordinary-polite dialogue

วันงานจะแบ่งหน้าที่กันอย่างไรคะ

wan ngan cha baeng na thi kan yangrai kha

How will we divide the duties on the event day? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ผมรับแขกด้านหน้าครับ ส่วนคุณนิดดูแลห้องประชุม

phom rap khaek dan na khrap suan khun nit dulae hong prachum

I'll receive guests at the front, while Khun Nit will take care of the meeting room. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

แล้วใครจะรับโทรศัพท์ระหว่างที่เราประชุมคะ

laeo khrai cha rap thorasap rawang thi rao prachum kha

And who will answer the phone while we are in the meeting? (ordinary polite follow-up, female speaker)

ฝ่ายธุรการจะรับสายครับ ขณะที่เรานำเสนองาน

fai thurakan cha rap sai khrap khana thi rao nam sanoe ngan

The administrative team will take the calls while we present. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Using ส่วน without a comparison set

❌ ส่วนผม อาหารจานนี้เผ็ดไปครับ

Misleading without another person's view; ส่วน invites a contrast.

✅ สำหรับผม อาหารจานนี้เผ็ดไปครับ

samrap phom ahan chan ni phet pai khrap

For me, this dish is too spicy. (ordinary polite personal evaluation, male speaker)

2. Using ขณะที่ for nonoverlapping sequence

❌ ขณะที่ประชุมเสร็จ เรากลับบ้านค่ะ

Incorrect for ‘after the meeting finished’; ขณะที่ presents overlap, not subsequent time.

✅ หลังจากประชุมเสร็จ เราก็กลับบ้านค่ะ

lang chak prachum set rao ko klap ban kha

After the meeting ended, we went home. (ordinary polite sequence, female speaker)

3. Omitting the changed topic after ส่วน

❌ ผมจะคุยกับลูกค้า ส่วนจะตรวจสัญญาค่ะ

Unclear for two assigned actors; the second topic must be stated.

✅ ผมจะคุยกับลูกค้า ส่วนคุณนิดจะตรวจสัญญาครับ

phom cha khui kap luk kha suan khun nit cha truat sanya khrap

I will speak with the customer, while Khun Nit will review the contract. (ordinary polite division of roles, male speaker)

4. Using balanced contrast for an unexpected result

❌ รถติดมาก ส่วนเรามาทันเวลาครับ

Wrong discourse relation—arriving on time counters the expectation raised by heavy traffic.

✅ รถติดมาก แต่เราก็มาทันเวลาครับ

rot tit mak tae rao ko ma than wela khrap

Traffic was very heavy, but we still arrived on time. (ordinary polite concessive contrast, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • ส่วน pivots from one member of a comparison set to another and assigns each its own comment.
  • ขณะที่ aligns overlapping situations; formal prose extends that alignment to “whereas.”
  • Use แต่ when the second clause opposes an expectation rather than balancing topics.
  • Thai omits repeated material when parallelism recovers it, but changed topics and actors must be explicit.
