ถึงแม้ A แต่ B means “although A, B.” A is accepted as true and would normally support an expectation; B asserts that reality goes against that expectation. Thai concession is therefore not simple opposition: it explicitly presents an obstacle as insufficient to prevent the result.
The concession logic
In ถึงแม้ A แต่ B, neither clause is denied. The speaker acknowledges A, then uses B to cancel the inference that listeners might normally draw from it.
ถึงแม้ฝนจะตกหนัก แต่การแข่งขันยังดำเนินต่อค่ะ
thueng mae fon cha tok nak tae kan khaengkhan yang damnoen to kha
Although it was raining heavily, the competition continued. (formal-neutral report, female voice)
ถึงแม้บ้านจะอยู่ไกล แต่เขามาถึงตรงเวลาทุกวันครับ
thueng mae ban cha yu klai tae khao ma thueng trong wela thuk wan khrap
Although his home is far away, he arrives on time every day. (ordinary polite observation, male speaker)
จะ frequently follows the subject in the concession clause. Here it does not necessarily mark future time. It helps package the situation as a concessive premise, much as แม้ว่า... does. Actual time still comes from context and time expressions.
ถึงแม้เมื่อวานผมจะไม่สบาย แต่ก็เข้าประชุมครบทุกช่วงครับ
thueng mae muea wan phom cha mai sabai tae ko khao prachum khrop thuk chuang khrap
Although I was unwell yesterday, I attended every session. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
Productive paired shapes
| Shape | Register or nuance | Use |
|---|---|---|
| ถึงแม้ A แต่ B | neutral to formal | full balanced concession |
| ถึงแม้ A แต่ก็ B | neutral | ก็ highlights the contrary result |
| แม้ว่า A แต่ B | neutral to formal | common full-clause variant |
| แม้ A ก็ B | compact formal | compressed concession |
| A แต่ B | neutral | plain contrast; concession inferred only from content |
ถึงแม้ข้อมูลจะยังไม่ครบ แต่เราก็พอเห็นแนวโน้มได้ค่ะ
thueng mae khomun cha yang mai khrop tae rao ko pho hen naeo nom dai kha
Although the data is not yet complete, we can still see the trend. (formal analytical statement, female voice)
แม้ว่างบประมาณจะจำกัด แต่ทีมงานยังรักษาคุณภาพไว้ได้ครับ
mae wa ngoppraman cha chamkat tae thim ngan yang raksa khunnaphap wai dai khrap
Although the budget is limited, the team has maintained quality. (formal professional statement, male voice)
ก็ after แต่ is common but optional. ยัง is independently meaningful: it marks persistence or continued validity despite A. A clause can contain both.
ถึงแม้จะดึกแล้ว แต่ร้านก็ยังมีลูกค้านั่งอยู่ค่ะ
thueng mae cha duek laeo tae ran ko yang mi luk kha nang yu kha
Although it is already late, there are still customers sitting in the restaurant. (ordinary polite observation, female speaker)
What can be omitted
In conversation, speakers may use only ถึงแม้/แม้ว่า when the second relation is obvious, or only แต่ when the first clause already creates an expectation. Full paired marking is clearest in careful speech and writing.
แม้ว่าจะเหนื่อย ฉันก็อยากไปค่ะ
mae wa cha nueai chan ko yak pai kha
Although I'm tired, I still want to go. (ordinary polite conversation, female speaker; no แต่)
รถติดมาก แต่เรามาทันครับ
rot tit mak tae rao ma than khrap
Traffic was terrible, but we made it in time. (ordinary polite conversation, male speaker; concession inferred)
These variants do not have an invisible missing word. The overt marker plus the semantic mismatch between expectation and result makes the relation recoverable.
Concession versus condition
ถ้า A ก็ B makes B dependent on a possible condition. ถึงแม้ A แต่ B accepts A—or considers it without allowing it to change B. Compare:
ถ้าฝนตกแรงขึ้น เราจะเลื่อนการแสดงค่ะ
tha fon tok raeng khuen rao cha luean kan sadaeng kha
If the rain gets heavier, we will postpone the performance. (ordinary polite condition, female speaker)
ถึงแม้ฝนตก เราก็จะจัดงานกลางแจ้งค่ะ
thueng mae fon tok rao ko cha chat ngan klang chaeng kha
Even if it rains, we will still hold the event outdoors. (ordinary polite concessive commitment, female speaker)
In a future hypothetical context, the second example can be translated “even if.” The core remains stable: A is insufficient to overturn B. For deeper clause distinctions, see concession clauses.
Subject continuity and punctuation
If both clauses share a subject, Thai can omit it in the second. With different actors, state both. A comma can help readers after a long concession clause, but Thai does not require an English comma mechanically.
ถึงแม้คุณนิดจะเพิ่งเริ่มงาน แต่เรียนรู้เร็วมากค่ะ
thueng mae khun nit cha phoeng roem ngan tae rian ru reo mak kha
Although Khun Nit has only just started the job, she learns very quickly. (ordinary polite assessment, female speaker; shared subject omitted)
ถึงแม้บริษัทจะประกาศล่วงหน้า แต่ลูกค้าหลายคนก็ยังไม่ทราบข่าวครับ
thueng mae borisat cha prakat luang na tae luk kha lai khon ko yang mai sap khao khrap
Although the company announced it in advance, many customers still did not know. (formal-neutral report, male voice; changed subject overt)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
วันนี้ยังไปดูห้องตัวอย่างไหมคะ ฝนตกแรงมาก
wan ni yang pai du hong tua yang mai kha fon tok raeng mak
Are we still going to see the show room today? It is raining very hard. (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ไปครับ ถึงแม้ฝนจะตก แต่ถนนเส้นนั้นไม่น่าจะท่วม
pai khrap thueng mae fon cha tok tae thanon sen nan mai na cha thuam
Yes. Although it is raining, that road probably will not flood. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ถ้ารถติดมาก เราจะไปสายไหมคะ
tha rot tit mak rao cha pai sai mai kha
If traffic is very heavy, will we be late? (ordinary polite follow-up, female speaker)
ถึงแม้รถจะติด เราก็เผื่อเวลาไว้แล้วครับ
thueng mae rot cha tit rao ko phuea wela wai laeo khrap
Even if traffic is heavy, we have already allowed extra time. (ordinary polite reassurance, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Treating the concession as a cause
❌ ถึงแม้ฝนตก งานจึงยกเลิกค่ะ
Wrong relation for the intended cause—จึง presents cancellation as a consequence of the rain.
✅ เพราะฝนตกหนัก งานจึงยกเลิกค่ะ
phro fon tok nak ngan chueng yok loek kha
Because it rained heavily, the event was canceled. (formal causal statement, female voice)
2. Translating concessive จะ as future
❌ ถึงแม้เมื่อวานเขาจะเหนื่อย หมายความว่าเขาจะเหนื่อยในอนาคตค่ะ
Incorrect interpretation—เมื่อวาน anchors the concession in the past; จะ does not force future time here.
✅ ถึงแม้เมื่อวานเขาจะเหนื่อย แต่ก็ทำงานเสร็จค่ะ
thueng mae muea wan khao cha nueai tae ko tham ngan set kha
Although he was tired yesterday, he finished the work. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
3. Leaving a changed subject unclear
❌ ถึงแม้ผมจะส่งเอกสารแล้ว แต่ยังไม่ตรวจครับ
Wrong for the intended changed actor; omission suggests that I have not checked it.
✅ ถึงแม้ผมจะส่งเอกสารแล้ว แต่ฝ่ายกฎหมายยังไม่ตรวจครับ
thueng mae phom cha song ekkasan laeo tae fai kotmai yang mai truat khrap
Although I sent the documents, Legal has not reviewed them yet. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
4. Using concessive marking for ordinary addition
❌ ถึงแม้ห้องนี้กว้าง แต่สว่างค่ะ
Unmotivated concession if spaciousness creates no expectation of darkness.
✅ ห้องนี้ทั้งกว้างและสว่างค่ะ
hong ni thang kwang lae sawang kha
This room is both spacious and bright. (ordinary polite positive description, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- A is acknowledged; B holds contrary to the expectation raised by A.
- แต่ก็ emphasizes the contrary result, while ยัง contributes persistence; neither is mere decoration.
- One half can be absent when semantics makes the concession recoverable, but the full pair is clearest.
- Keep shared subjects omitted when natural and changed subjects overt.
