ไม่เพียงแต่…แต่ยัง Not Only–But Also | Thai Grammar

ไม่เพียงแต่ A แต่ยัง B means “not only A but also B.” Unlike corrective ไม่ใช่ A แต่ B, it does not reject A: it asserts A and then expands the claim with B, which is often less expected, more important, or greater in degree. Good Thai requires the two halves to have parallel scope.

Retain A, then add B

The first half contains apparent negation, but ไม่เพียงแต่ means “not merely/only.” The proposition in A remains true. แต่ยัง opens the added proposition B; ยัง presents it as an additional step beyond A.

ร้านนี้ไม่เพียงแต่มีอาหารอร่อย แต่ยังให้บริการดีมากด้วยค่ะ

The relationship is additive escalation, not simple contrast. With ordinary แต่, two true facts are viewed as opposed. With ไม่เพียงแต่…แต่ยัง, B broadens the positive or negative impact of A.

Parallel nouns, predicates, and clauses

The correlatives can enclose noun phrases, predicates, or full clauses. The category on both sides should match so the listener can identify exactly what is being added.

If the subject stays the same, Thai normally omits it from B. If the actor changes, state the new subject before ยัง.

Locate the shared frame before writing. If A begins after a shared subject, B should normally begin at the same structural level after แต่ยัง.

Optional material and register

In formal writing, the full pair is clearest. In speech, the first half may appear as ไม่ใช่แค่ A and the second as แต่ยัง B or simply B ด้วย. That is natural (informal), but it is a different surface frame.

งานนี้ไม่ใช่แค่ยากนะ ยังต้องเดินทางบ่อยด้วย

ngan ni mai chai khae yak na yang tong doen thang boi duai

This job isn't just difficult; it also requires frequent travel. (informal conversation)

The second แต่ can occasionally be absent in compressed prose, leaving ไม่เพียงแต่ A ยัง B อีกด้วย. The relation remains recoverable from ไม่เพียงแต่ and ยัง...อีกด้วย, but learners should master the balanced full form first.

มาตรการนี้ไม่เพียงแต่ลดความเสี่ยง ยังเพิ่มความเชื่อมั่นอีกด้วย

This measure not only reduces risk; it also increases confidence. (formal compressed writing)

Final ด้วย or อีกด้วย reinforces addition. It is frequent but not obligatory because ยัง already signals that B extends the set.

Do not translate English tense separately inside each half. Thai time expressions and aspect markers take the scope their position supplies; repeat them only when the two events differ in time or aspect.

Common Mistakes

1. Treating A as false

❌ เขาไม่เพียงแต่เป็นครู แต่เป็นนักเขียนแทนค่ะ

Wrong relation for replacement—ไม่เพียงแต่ retains ‘teacher,’ while แทน says the second role replaces it.

✅ เขาไม่เพียงแต่เป็นครู แต่ยังเป็นนักเขียนด้วยค่ะ

2. Omitting ยัง from the full paired frame

3. Breaking parallelism

Incorrect first half—ประโยชน์ needs เป็น or มี before it can parallel สร้างงาน.

4. Hiding a changed subject
