ไม่ใช่…แต่ and Corrective Contrast

Thai ไม่ใช่…แต่… creates a corrective contrast: it rejects one candidate, description, or interpretation and replaces it with another. ห้องนี้ไม่ใช่ห้องเก็บของ แต่เป็นห้องทำงาน means “This is not a storage room; it is an office.” The first half removes A from consideration, and the second supplies B as the correction.

English uses not…but… across nouns, adjectives, and clauses. Thai must choose a negative expression appropriate to the rejected predicate. ไม่ใช่ is central for identity and proposition-level correction, but ordinary event denial often uses ไม่ได้ or ไม่. The paired relation is therefore productive, not a rigid translation template.

Reject A, replace it with B

The most transparent identity frame is subject + ไม่ใช่ + noun A + แต่เป็น + noun B. Repeating เป็น makes the replacement predicate explicit.

What is corrected?Productive frameRegister
identity/categorysubject + ไม่ใช่ A แต่เป็น Bordinary / neutral
whole interpretationไม่ใช่ว่า P แต่ Qneutral careful
completed eventsubject + ไม่ได้ V1 แต่ V2ordinary / neutral
property or habitsubject + ไม่ A แต่ Bordinary / neutral
formal identity correctionมิใช่ A หากแต่เป็น Bformal / literary

กล่องนี้ไม่ใช่ของลูกค้า แต่เป็นตัวอย่างสำหรับฝึกอบรมค่ะ

klong ni mai chai khong lukkha tae pen tua yang samrap fuek oprom kha

This box isn't a customer's; it's a sample for training. (ordinary-polite identity correction, female speaker)

คนที่โทรมาไม่ใช่ผู้จัดการ แต่เป็นเจ้าหน้าที่ฝ่ายบุคคลครับ

khon thi tho ma mai chai phu chatkan tae pen chao nathi fai bukkhon khrap

The person who called wasn't the manager but an HR officer. (ordinary-polite identity correction, male speaker)

เป้าหมายไม่ใช่การทำงานให้เร็วที่สุด แต่เป็นการลดข้อผิดพลาดค่ะ

paomai mai chai kan tham ngan hai reo thi sut tae pen kan lot kho phit phlat kha

The goal is not to work as fast as possible, but to reduce errors. (formal-polite corrective statement, female speaker)

These pairs coordinate comparable noun-like expressions. Thai has no articles corresponding automatically to English a/the manager; definiteness comes from context. It also has no special inflection on เป็น for past or plural reference.

💡
In an identity correction, preserve the parallel frame: ไม่ใช่ + noun A แต่เป็น + noun B. Repeating เป็น is especially helpful when B is long or could otherwise be mistaken for a simple contrasting topic.

Simple contrast is not correction

Plain แต่ connects propositions that contrast: “but.” The first proposition can remain true. ไม่ใช่…แต่… is narrower: it explicitly denies A and substitutes B.

ห้องนี้เล็ก แต่สว่างมากครับ

hong ni lek tae sawang mak khrap

This room is small but very bright. (ordinary-polite contrast, male speaker; both properties are true)

ห้องนี้ไม่ใช่ห้องประชุม แต่เป็นห้องรับแขกครับ

hong ni mai chai hong prachum tae pen hong rap khaek khrap

This isn't a meeting room; it's a reception room. (ordinary-polite correction, male speaker; the first category is rejected)

In the first, brightness does not replace smallness. In the second, reception room replaces meeting room as the intended category. This distinction matters more than translating แต่ with one English word.

If the ไม่ใช่ A half appears alone, it rejects A but leaves the correction unstated. Context may make B obvious:

นี่เอกสารฉบับสุดท้ายใช่ไหมคะ — ไม่ใช่ค่ะ ยังเหลืออีกสองฉบับ

ni ekkasan chabap sutthai chai mai kha mai chai kha yang luea ik song chabap

Is this the last document? — No. There are still two more. (ordinary-polite correction, female speaker; the alternative is supplied by a new clause)

If only แต่ B remains, the listener normally hears general contrast with prior discourse, not a complete paired correction. The missing relation must be recoverable from what was just said.

Choose negation by predicate type

Thai ไม่ใช่ negates ใช่ “be the identified/correct one” and is natural with noun categories or a whole proposition. It is not a universal not to place before every verb.

เมื่อวานผมไม่ได้หยุดงาน แต่ไปพบลูกค้านอกสถานที่ครับ

muea wan phom mai dai yut ngan tae pai phop lukkha nok sathan thi khrap

Yesterday I didn't take the day off; I went to meet a client off-site. (ordinary-polite event correction, male speaker)

ร้านนี้ไม่แพง แต่เดินจากสถานีค่อนข้างไกลค่ะ

ran ni mai phaeng tae doen chak sathani khonkhang klai kha

This place isn't expensive, but it's quite a long walk from the station. (ordinary-polite contrast, female speaker; property negation with ไม่)

ไม่ใช่ว่าเขาไม่อยากช่วย แต่วันนี้เขาติดประชุมทั้งวันครับ

mai chai wa khao mai yak chuai tae wan ni khao tit prachum thang wan khrap

It isn't that he doesn't want to help; he's tied up in meetings all day today. (careful ordinary-polite interpretation correction, male speaker)

The first denies a completed event with ไม่ได้ + verb. The second directly negates a property with ไม่. The third uses ไม่ใช่ว่า + clause to reject an explanation as a whole. The negative ไม่ใช่ guide gives the wider predicate-type system.

English speakers often see two adjacent Thai verbs and search for an infinitive relation. In ไม่ได้หยุดงาน แต่ไปพบลูกค้า, however, หยุดงาน and ไปพบลูกค้า are parallel alternatives under one subject and time frame.

Correcting focus rather than truth alone

The rejected material is usually something salient: a mistaken label, assumed cause, wrong participant, time, amount, or purpose. Position identifies the corrected focus.

ฉันนัดเขาวันพฤหัสบดี ไม่ใช่วันศุกร์ค่ะ

chan nat khao wan pharuehatsabodi mai chai wan suk kha

I arranged to meet him on Thursday, not Friday. (ordinary-polite correction of time, female speaker)

เราต้องส่งไฟล์ให้ฝ่ายบัญชี ไม่ใช่ฝ่ายกฎหมายครับ

rao tong song fai hai fai banchi mai chai fai kotmai khrap

We need to send the file to Accounting, not Legal. (ordinary-polite correction of recipient, male speaker)

These compact afterthought corrections omit แต่ because only the wrong alternative is being excluded after the correct one has already been stated. The full paired order reverses that discourse: ไม่ใช่วันศุกร์ แต่เป็นวันพฤหัสบดี first rejects the active assumption and then replaces it.

วันประชุมไม่ใช่วันศุกร์ แต่เป็นวันพฤหัสบดีค่ะ

wan prachum mai chai wan suk tae pen wan pharuehatsabodi kha

The meeting day isn't Friday; it's Thursday. (ordinary-polite full correction, female speaker)

Thus word order reflects information structure, not just logical equivalence. The negation-and-focus guide explains how position changes what Thai negation rejects.

Corrective contrast versus “not only”

Do not confuse replacement with additive escalation. ไม่ใช่ A แต่ B says B corrects A. ไม่เพียงแต่ A แต่ยัง B keeps A true and adds B: “not only A but also B.”

ปัญหาไม่ใช่ราคา แต่เป็นเวลาส่งของครับ

panha mai chai rakha tae pen wela song khong khrap

The problem isn't the price; it's the delivery time. (ordinary-polite replacement, male speaker)

ปัญหานี้ไม่เพียงแต่ทำให้งานล่าช้า แต่ยังกระทบลูกค้าด้วยค่ะ

panha ni mai phiang tae tham hai ngan lacha tae yang krathop lukkha duai kha

This problem not only delays the work but also affects customers. (formal-polite additive escalation, female speaker)

In the second sentence, delaying work remains true. ไม่เพียงแต่ denies that it is the only effect. Substituting ไม่ใช่ would wrongly reject that effect.

Subject omission, time, and aspect

Shared subjects and time frames can occur once. New participants should be named.

เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้ขับรถมา แต่นั่งรถไฟครับ

muea chao phom mai dai khap rot ma tae nang rotfai khrap

This morning I didn't drive here; I took the train. (ordinary-polite event correction, male speaker; subject and time shared)

รายงานไม่ได้หาย แต่คุณเมย์ย้ายไปไว้ในแฟ้มใหม่แล้วค่ะ

raingan mai dai hai tae khun me yai pai wai nai faem mai laeo kha

The report wasn't lost; Khun May had moved it into the new folder. (ordinary-polite correction, female speaker; changed actor overt and completion marked by แล้ว)

แล้ว locates the move as already completed; ไม่ใช่…แต่ itself does not mark tense. If the second clause has its own subject, as here, it must precede the second predicate. Do not omit it simply because English repeats it or changes voice.

Register and punctuation

ไม่ใช่…แต่… is common in ordinary conversation and neutral writing. In formal prose, มิใช่…หากแต่… (formal/literary) provides a more elevated alternative, but it sounds conspicuously written in everyday conversation.

มาตรการนี้มิใช่การแก้ปัญหาเฉพาะหน้า หากแต่เป็นการปรับโครงสร้างระยะยาว

mattrakan ni mi chai kan kae panha chapho na hak tae pen kan prap khrongsang raya yao

This measure is not a short-term fix, but rather a long-term structural adjustment. (formal written statement)

A visible space or punctuation-like pause before แต่ is useful when both halves are clauses. Short noun corrections often run smoothly without a strong pause. Thai punctuation need not copy English comma placement.

💡
Use มิใช่…หากแต่… for deliberately elevated formal prose, not as a “more correct” everyday version. The ordinary productive frame is ไม่ใช่…แต่….

Ordinary-polite dialogue

Two colleagues correct a room-booking assumption.

พรุ่งนี้เราประชุมที่ห้องใหญ่ใช่ไหมคะ

phrung ni rao prachum thi hong yai chai mai kha

We're meeting in the large room tomorrow, right? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)

ไม่ใช่ห้องใหญ่ครับ แต่เป็นห้องกระจกชั้นสาม

mai chai hong yai khrap tae pen hong krachok chan sam

Not the large room; it's the glass room on the third floor. (ordinary-polite correction, male speaker)

อ๋อ เปลี่ยนเฉพาะห้อง ไม่ได้เปลี่ยนเวลาใช่ไหมคะ

o plian chapho hong mai dai plian wela chai mai kha

Oh, only the room changed; the time didn't change, correct? (ordinary-polite clarification, female speaker)

ใช่ครับ เริ่มสิบโมงเหมือนเดิม

chai khrap roem sip mong muean doem

Correct. It still starts at ten. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)

Common Mistakes

1. Using ไม่ใช่ as universal verb negation

❌ เมื่อวานผมไม่ใช่ไปธนาคารครับ

Incorrect for denying a completed trip—ไม่ใช่ does not simply replace English ‘did not.’

✅ เมื่อวานผมไม่ได้ไปธนาคาร แต่ไปไปรษณีย์ครับ

muea wan phom mai dai pai thanakhan tae pai praisani khrap

Yesterday I didn't go to the bank; I went to the post office. (ordinary-polite event correction, male speaker)

2. Omitting the positive identity predicate after a long correction

❌ จุดประสงค์ไม่ใช่การตำหนิพนักงาน แต่หาวิธีป้องกันค่ะ

Poorly parallel for the intended identity correction—the first branch is a process noun phrase, while the second is an unmarked verb phrase.

✅ จุดประสงค์ไม่ใช่การตำหนิพนักงาน แต่เป็นการหาวิธีป้องกันค่ะ

chut prasong mai chai kan tamni phanakngan tae pen kan ha withi pongkan kha

The purpose isn't to criticize employees, but to find a way to prevent the problem. (formal-polite correction, female speaker)

3. Confusing correction with additive “not only”

❌ งานนี้ไม่ใช่ยาก แต่ใช้เวลามากด้วยครับ

Wrong for intended ‘not only difficult’—ไม่ใช่ rejects difficulty instead of retaining it and adding another point.

✅ งานนี้ไม่เพียงแต่ยาก แต่ยังใช้เวลามากด้วยครับ

ngan ni mai phiang tae yak tae yang chai wela mak duai khrap

This task is not only difficult but also takes a lot of time. (formal-polite additive statement, male speaker)

4. Hiding a new actor in the correction

❌ ฉันไม่ได้ยกเลิกนัด แต่โทรมาเลื่อนค่ะ

Ambiguous for the intended meaning ‘the client called to postpone’; without a new subject, ฉัน remains the likely caller.

✅ ฉันไม่ได้ยกเลิกนัด แต่ลูกค้าโทรมาขอเลื่อนค่ะ

chan mai dai yokloek nat tae lukkha tho ma kho luean kha

I didn't cancel the appointment; the client called to postpone it. (ordinary-polite correction, female speaker; changed actor overt)

Key Takeaways

Use ไม่ใช่ A แต่เป็น B to reject one identity and supply another, ไม่ใช่ว่า P แต่ Q to correct an interpretation, and ordinary ไม่/ไม่ได้ when the rejected material is a property or event. Keep both halves parallel, state a changed subject, and distinguish corrective replacement from simple แต่ contrast and additive ไม่เพียงแต่…แต่ยัง….
