Thai ทั้ง…และ… means “both…and…” and explicitly includes two coordinated alternatives. It can link noun phrases, predicates, properties, or larger parallel expressions: ทั้งชาและกาแฟ “both tea and coffee,” ทั้งเร็วและแม่นยำ “both fast and accurate.”
Unlike plain และ “and,” the opening ทั้ง announces in advance that a balanced second member will follow. The construction does not make a verb plural and does not supply English articles. Its force comes from coordination, order, and discourse focus.
One frame, two matching members
The basic structure is ทั้ง X และ Y. X and Y should fill the same grammatical and semantic slot.
| Coordinated unit | Productive frame | Model |
|---|---|---|
| noun phrases | ทั้ง + noun X + และ + noun Y | ทั้งค่าเช่าและค่าไฟ |
| property predicates | ทั้ง + property X + และ + property Y | ทั้งกว้างและสว่าง |
| verb phrases | ทั้ง + V phrase X + และ + V phrase Y | ทั้งลดต้นทุนและประหยัดเวลา |
| parallel clauses | ทั้ง + clause X + และ + clause Y | both P and Q are true |
| two named people | ทั้ง + person X + และ + person Y | formal-neutral explicit inclusion |
ค่าใช้จ่ายนี้รวมทั้งค่าเช่าและค่าไฟแล้วค่ะ
kha chai chai ni ruam thang kha chao lae kha fai laeo kha
This expense includes both rent and electricity. (formal-polite explanation, female speaker; coordinated noun phrases)
ห้องใหม่ทั้งกว้างและสว่างครับ
hong mai thang kwang lae sawang khrap
The new room is both spacious and bright. (ordinary-polite assessment, male speaker; coordinated property predicates)
ระบบนี้ช่วยทั้งลดเวลารอและลดข้อผิดพลาดค่ะ
rabop ni chuai thang lot wela ro lae lot kho phit phlat kha
This system helps both reduce waiting time and reduce errors. (formal-polite statement, female speaker; parallel verb phrases)
Thai property words such as กว้าง and สว่าง are predicates directly; do not insert a general equivalent of English be. In the verbal example, both branches fit after ช่วย “help.” Repeating ลด makes that parallel structure immediately clear.
Both nouns and both participants
With noun phrases, ทั้ง…และ… emphasizes that neither of two relevant categories is excluded. Plain และ simply adds; กับ is especially natural between nouns in conversation.
ผู้จัดเชิญทั้งลูกค้าและพนักงานเข้าร่วมงานครับ
phu chat choen thang lukkha lae phanakngan khao ruam ngan khrap
The organizers invited both clients and employees to the event. (formal-polite statement, male speaker)
เย็นนี้คุณนิดกับคุณอรจะมาค่ะ
yen ni khun nit kap khun on cha ma kha
Khun Nit and Khun On are coming this evening. (ordinary-polite conversational coordination, female speaker)
ทั้งคุณนิดและคุณอรยืนยันว่าจะมาค่ะ
thang khun nit lae khun on yuenyan wa cha ma kha
Both Khun Nit and Khun On have confirmed that they will come. (careful/formal-polite statement, female speaker; explicit inclusion of both)
The last two may describe the same people. The paired frame is more emphatic and more at home in careful speech or writing (neutral/formal). It is not wrong in conversation, but using it for every ordinary pair can sound unnecessarily deliberate. The กับ guide explains the distinction between noun coordination and accompaniment.
When the pair is the subject, the following verb does not change form. Thai has no plural agreement corresponding to English both are. Time and aspect are likewise independent:
ทั้งฝ่ายบัญชีและฝ่ายกฎหมายตรวจเอกสารเสร็จแล้วครับ
thang fai banchi lae fai kotmai truat ekkasan set laeo khrap
Both Accounting and Legal have finished reviewing the documents. (formal-polite report, male speaker)
แล้ว marks completion of the shared predicate; it is not agreement with two departments.
Coordinating predicates and larger phrases
The construction can coordinate what one subject does, what one item is like, or what two propositions contribute.
งานนี้ต้องทั้งคุยกับลูกค้าและประสานงานกับช่างค่ะ
ngan ni tong thang khui kap lukkha lae prasan ngan kap chang kha
This job requires both speaking with clients and coordinating with technicians. (formal-polite job description, female speaker)
อาหารร้านนี้ทั้งรสชาติดีและราคาไม่แพงครับ
ahan ran ni thang rotchat di lae rakha mai phaeng khrap
The food at this restaurant both tastes good and isn't expensive. (ordinary-polite evaluation, male speaker)
การเลื่อนกำหนดส่งกระทบทั้งทีมที่กำลังผลิตสินค้าและลูกค้าที่รอรับของค่ะ
kan luean kamnot song krathop thang thim thi kamlang phalit sinkha lae lukkha thi ro rap khong kha
Postponing the deadline affects both the team producing the goods and the customers waiting to receive them. (formal-polite statement, female speaker; two expanded noun phrases)
The two halves may be long, but their boundaries must remain audible. Repetition such as กับ inside both branches can improve clarity. The parallel-structure guide develops this principle for formal lists and contrasts.
What happens when one half is absent
Without ทั้ง, และ still coordinates: ชาและกาแฟ “tea and coffee.” The meaning is addition, but explicit “both” emphasis disappears. Without และ, ทั้ง may belong to a completely different quantifier construction.
ผมทำงานทั้งวันครับ
phom tham ngan thang wan khrap
I worked all day. (ordinary-polite statement, male speaker; ทั้ง totalizes one time span)
ผมดื่มทั้งชาและน้ำผลไม้ระหว่างประชุมครับ
phom duem thang cha lae nam phonlamai rawang prachum khrap
I drank both tea and fruit juice during the meeting. (ordinary-polite report, male speaker; paired coordination)
In ทั้งวัน, no missing second half needs to be supplied: ทั้ง means “the whole.” With a known count, it also appears in เอกสารทั้งสองฉบับ “both documents.” These are quantifier uses covered in ทั้ง and totality, not incomplete conjunctions.
Conversational Thai also has repeated ทั้ง X ทั้ง Y, often evaluative: ทั้งแพงทั้งไกล “both expensive and far.” This is natural (informal/ordinary speech), whereas ทั้ง X และ Y is the safer neutral-to-formal form for reports and careful statements.
ที่พักนั้นทั้งแพงทั้งไกล ไม่เหมาะกับทริปนี้ค่ะ
thi phak nan thang phaeng thang klai mai mo kap thrip ni kha
That accommodation is both expensive and far away; it isn't suitable for this trip. (ordinary conversational evaluation, female speaker)
The repeated form does not license mismatched categories either. Its more rhythmic delivery often strengthens evaluation.
Negation and scope
A negative inside one branch applies to that branch: ทั้งสะอาดและไม่แพง means “both clean and not expensive.” To deny both predicates independently, repeat ไม่ if that makes the structure clearer.
ข้อเสนอนี้ทั้งไม่ลดค่าใช้จ่ายและไม่แก้ปัญหาหลักครับ
kho sanoe ni thang mai lot kha chai chai lae mai kae panha lak khrap
This proposal neither reduces costs nor solves the main problem. (formal-polite critical assessment, male speaker; negation repeated over each branch)
English neither…nor has no single obligatory Thai template. Repeated ไม่ within a balanced frame states the intended scope. In positive coordination, do not add articles before nouns merely because English says both the clients and the employees; Thai definiteness remains contextual.
Omission and shared material
Shared subjects, modals, and objects can appear once outside the paired frame.
พรุ่งนี้ฉันจะทั้งรับแขกและพาชมห้องประชุมค่ะ
phrung ni chan cha thang rap khaek lae pha chom hong prachum kha
Tomorrow I'll both welcome the guests and show them the meeting room. (ordinary-polite plan, female speaker; subject and prospective marker shared)
The subject ฉัน and จะ govern both predicates. Thai does not need to repeat them, but this is coordination under shared scope—not two English infinitives after a special auxiliary. If the actor changes, use two explicit clauses rather than forcing unlike material into the pair.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers choose a venue for a workshop.
ห้องริมสวนเหมาะไหมคะ
hong rim suan mo mai kha
Would the garden-side room be suitable? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)
เหมาะครับ ทั้งเงียบและมีแสงธรรมชาติเยอะ
mo khrap thang ngiap lae mi saeng thammachat yoe
Yes. It's both quiet and has plenty of natural light. (ordinary-polite assessment, male speaker)
แล้วรองรับทั้งผู้เข้าร่วมและวิทยากรได้ครบไหมคะ
laeo rong rap thang phu khao ruam lae witthayakon dai khrop mai kha
And can it accommodate both the participants and the speakers? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker; paired noun coordination)
ได้ครับ ทั้งสองกลุ่มรวมกันยังไม่เกินห้าสิบคน
dai khrap thang song klum ruam kan yang mai koen ha sip khon
Yes. The two groups together still total no more than fifty people. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker; ทั้งสอง is a quantifier, not the correlative)
The dialogue shows that paired ทั้ง…และ… and quantified ทั้งสองกลุ่ม are related in inclusive meaning but structurally different.
Common Mistakes
1. Leaving out the second linker in formal coordination
❌ รายงานนี้ครอบคลุมทั้งรายได้ ค่าใช้จ่ายครับ
Incomplete for intended explicit ‘both–and’—the second coordinate needs และ or conversational กับ.
✅ รายงานนี้ครอบคลุมทั้งรายได้และค่าใช้จ่ายครับ
raingan ni khropkhlum thang rai dai lae kha chai chai khrap
This report covers both income and expenses. (formal-polite statement, male speaker)
2. Mixing a noun with a full clause
❌ ห้องนี้มีทั้งความเงียบและเดินทางสะดวกค่ะ
Poorly parallel—the first branch is a noun phrase, while the second is a predicate.
✅ ห้องนี้ทั้งเงียบและเดินทางสะดวกค่ะ
hong ni thang ngiap lae doen thang saduak kha
This room is both quiet and easy to reach. (ordinary-polite assessment, female speaker)
3. Treating every standalone ทั้ง as half of a pair
❌ เมื่อคืนหมาเห่าทั้งคืนและค่ะ
Incorrect—ทั้งคืน means ‘all night’ and does not predict a second coordinate.
✅ เมื่อคืนหมาเห่าทั้งคืนค่ะ
muea khuen ma hao thang khuen kha
A dog barked all night last night. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)
4. Adding a plural copula before properties
❌ ห้องสองห้องนี้เป็นทั้งสะอาดและสว่างครับ
Incorrect—สะอาด and สว่าง are direct property predicates; เป็น is not an English-style plural ‘are.’
✅ ห้องพักทั้งสองห้องนี้สะอาดและสว่างครับ
hong phak thang song hong ni sa at lae sawang khrap
Both of these guest rooms are clean and bright. (ordinary-polite assessment, male speaker; quantified subject plus plain predicates)
Key Takeaways
Use ทั้ง X และ Y to include two parallel nouns, predicates, or larger expressions. Keep X and Y structurally comparable, place shared material outside the frame only when it scopes over both, and remember that a subject made of two members causes no verb agreement. Standalone ทั้ง can instead mean “whole/all,” while repeated ทั้ง X ทั้ง Y is a more conversational alternative.
