Thai เมื่อ…ก็… correlates a time-setting clause with the event or state that holds in that setting: “when P, Q” or “once P, then Q.” เมื่อ opens the temporal frame, and ก็ may resume the main assertion after that frame.
The pair does not conjugate either verb. A past narrative, a future procedure, and a recurring generalization can all use the same frame. Lexical time, aspect, the event type, and discourse establish when and how often the relation applies.
Frame first, main event second
The clearest productive order is เมื่อ P, (subject) ก็ Q. The two halves are clauses, although a subject can remain unspoken when the context makes it recoverable.
| Frame | Typical interpretation | Register |
|---|---|---|
| เมื่อ P ก็ Q | when/once P, Q follows or holds | neutral; often careful |
| เมื่อ P, Q | same temporal frame without resumptive ก็ | neutral |
| Q เมื่อ P | assert Q first, then locate it in time | neutral |
| ตอนที่ P, Q | “at the time when,” especially conversational | ordinary speech |
เมื่อประตูเปิด คนที่รออยู่ก็เดินเข้าไปค่ะ
muea pratu poet khon thi ro yu ko doen khao pai kha
When the door opened, the people waiting went inside. (neutral-polite narrative, female speaker)
เมื่อถึงคิวของคุณ เจ้าหน้าที่ก็จะเรียกชื่อครับ
muea thueng khiu khong khun chao nathi ko cha riak chue khrap
When it is your turn, the officer will call your name. (formal-polite procedure, male speaker)
เมื่อรู้ผลแล้ว กรุณาแจ้งทีมทันทีค่ะ
muea ru phon laeo karuna chaeng thim thanthi kha
Once you know the result, please inform the team immediately. (formal-polite instruction, female speaker; ก็ omitted)
If the main clause has an overt subject, it precedes ก็: เจ้าหน้าที่ก็จะเรียก. Without that subject, ก็ can directly precede the predicate. Written Thai may use a space at the clause boundary, especially after a long frame, but does not put spaces between every word.
What ก็ adds—and what it does not
Compare a pair with the same basic timing:
เมื่อประชุมเสร็จ เราจะโทรหาลูกค้าค่ะ
muea prachum set rao cha tho ha lukkha kha
When the meeting is over, we'll call the client. (neutral-polite plan, female speaker)
เมื่อประชุมเสร็จ เราก็จะโทรหาลูกค้าค่ะ
muea prachum set rao ko cha tho ha lukkha kha
When the meeting is over, then we'll call the client. (neutral-polite plan, female speaker; the second step is explicitly resumed)
The second sentence makes the correlation more explicit, perhaps because the sequence is being explained or contrasted. ก็ does not add past or future time and does not by itself mean that the first event caused the second. It relates the following comment to the established frame.
This resumptive role connects with conditional ถ้า…ก็… and other uses described in the ก็ guide. The interpretation comes from the first linker: เมื่อ supplies time, while ถ้า supplies a condition.
Past, future, and recurring readings
The same structure spans different temporal settings.
เมื่อเช้านี้พอผมเปิดร้าน ลูกค้าคนแรกก็มาถึงพอดีครับ
muea chao ni pho phom poet ran lukkha khon raek ko ma thueng phodi khrap
This morning, just as I opened the shop, the first customer arrived. (ordinary-polite past narrative, male speaker)
เมื่อโครงการผ่านการอนุมัติ เราก็จะเริ่มจ้างพนักงานเพิ่มค่ะ
muea khrongkan phan kan anumat rao ko cha roem chang phanakngan phoem kha
When the project is approved, we'll start hiring more staff. (formal-polite future plan, female speaker)
เมื่ออากาศร้อนจัด เครื่องปรับอากาศก็ใช้ไฟมากขึ้นครับ
muea akat ron chat khrueang prap akat ko chai fai mak khuen khrap
When the weather is extremely hot, air conditioners use more electricity. (neutral-polite generalization, male speaker)
เช้านี้ anchors the first in the past, จะ presents the planned second event in the second, and the kind-level participants in the third invite a recurring reading. เมื่อ itself has not changed.
Aspect stays local to its clause. In เมื่อส่งครบแล้ว, แล้ว presents the submissions as complete before the main action. With an ongoing background, กำลัง…อยู่ can appear inside either clause.
เมื่อทุกคนส่งข้อมูลครบแล้ว เราก็จะจัดทำรายงานสรุปครับ
muea thuk khon song khomun khrop laeo rao ko cha chat tham raingan sarup khrap
Once everyone has submitted all the information, we'll prepare the summary report. (formal-polite plan, male speaker)
เมื่อฉันเดินเข้าไป เขาก็กำลังอธิบายงานให้ทีมฟังอยู่ค่ะ
muea chan doen khao pai khao ko kamlang athibai ngan hai thim fang yu kha
When I walked in, he was explaining the work to the team. (neutral-polite past narrative, female speaker)
The temporal-framing guide explains how เมื่อ, ตอน, and ตอนที่ interact with event boundaries and intervals.
เมื่อ versus ถ้า and พอ
เมื่อ packages P as the time at which Q is located. ถ้า packages P as a contingency. พอ commonly highlights the point immediately reached and often suggests that Q follows promptly.
เมื่อหัวหน้ามาถึง เราจะเริ่มประชุมค่ะ
muea hua na ma thueng rao cha roem prachum kha
When the manager arrives, we'll start the meeting. (neutral-polite schedule; arrival treated as the time anchor, female speaker)
ถ้าหัวหน้ามาถึงทัน เราก็จะเริ่มพร้อมกันครับ
tha hua na ma thueng than rao ko cha roem phrom kan khrap
If the manager arrives in time, we'll start together. (ordinary-polite open condition, male speaker)
พอหัวหน้ามาถึง ทุกคนก็เงียบลงทันทีค่ะ
pho hua na ma thueng thuk khon ko ngiap long thanthi kha
As soon as the manager arrived, everyone immediately quieted down. (ordinary-polite narrative, female speaker)
The real-world event may be similar, but the speaker's viewpoint differs. The conditional leaves timely arrival open; พอ foregrounds immediate succession. This distinction is semantic, not a choice among English tense forms. See พอ and immediate succession.
Subject omission and participant changes
When the same person performs both actions, the subject can be stated once or omitted entirely in an instruction.
เมื่อใช้เครื่องเสร็จแล้วก็ปิดสวิตช์ด้วยนะครับ
muea chai khrueang set laeo ko pit sawit duai na khrap
When you've finished using the machine, please switch it off too. (ordinary-polite instruction, male speaker; addressee understood throughout)
This is not a sequence of infinitives. The addressee is the understood actor of both ใช้ and ปิด. If the main actor changes, state it:
เมื่อพนักงานส่งคำขอแล้ว ผู้จัดการก็จะได้รับอีเมลค่ะ
muea phanakngan song kham kho laeo phu chatkan ko cha dai rap imel kha
When an employee submits a request, the manager will receive an email. (formal-polite process description, female speaker; changed subject overt)
If ผู้จัดการ were omitted, listeners could easily continue with the employee as the understood participant. Thai omission follows discourse continuity, not a blanket license to delete every subject.
Punctuation and register
เมื่อ (neutral/formal) is common in narration, procedures, announcements, and careful speech. In ordinary conversation, ตอนที่ often sounds less written, especially for a background interval: ตอนที่คุณโทรมา ฉันขับรถอยู่. เมื่อ remains perfectly modern; it is not literary or archaic.
When the temporal frame comes after the main event, ก็ normally does not precede it: ฉันอยู่ที่ร้านเมื่อเขาโทรมา. Frame-first order makes the paired shape เมื่อ…ก็… most visible. A comma-like pause after a long initial frame is natural, but Thai punctuation is less obligatory than English punctuation.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers discuss the arrival of repaired equipment.
เครื่องจะส่งกลับมาเมื่อไรคะ
khrueang cha song klap ma muea rai kha
When will the machine be sent back? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)
ช่างบอกว่าจะส่งพรุ่งนี้เช้าครับ
chang bok wa cha song phrung ni chao khrap
The technician said it would be sent tomorrow morning. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)
เมื่อเครื่องมาถึงแล้ว เราก็ทดสอบได้เลยใช่ไหมคะ
muea khrueang ma thueng laeo rao ko thotsop dai loei chai mai kha
Once the machine arrives, we can test it right away, correct? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker)
ใช่ครับ แต่ต้องอ่านรายงานการซ่อมก่อน
chai khrap tae tong an raingan kan som kon
Yes, but we need to read the repair report first. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Adding ที่ after เมื่อ
❌ เมื่อที่รถมาถึง เราจะโทรหาคุณค่ะ
Incorrect—เมื่อ directly introduces a clause; ที่ belongs in the different frame ตอนที่.
✅ เมื่อรถมาถึงแล้ว เราจะโทรหาคุณค่ะ
muea rot ma thueng laeo rao cha tho ha khun kha
When the vehicle has arrived, we'll call you. (neutral-polite plan, female speaker)
2. Putting ก็ before an overt main-clause subject
❌ เมื่อฝนหยุด ก็เด็ก ๆ จะออกไปเล่นครับ
Incorrect neutral paired order—the overt main-clause subject precedes ก็.
✅ เมื่อฝนหยุด เด็ก ๆ ก็จะออกไปเล่นครับ
muea fon yut dek dek ko cha ok pai len khrap
When the rain stops, the children will go out to play. (neutral-polite statement, male speaker)
3. Treating เมื่อ as past tense
❌ ผมเมื่อไปซื้อผักที่ตลาดครับ
Incorrect for intended past meaning—เมื่อ cannot be inserted before a verb as a past auxiliary.
✅ เมื่อวานผมไปซื้อผักที่ตลาดครับ
muea wan phom pai sue phak thi talat khrap
Yesterday I went to buy vegetables at the market. (ordinary-polite past statement, male speaker)
4. Hiding a changed actor
❌ เมื่อฉันส่งข้อความแล้วก็โทรกลับค่ะ
Wrong for the intended meaning ‘he called back’—with no new subject, ฉัน remains the likely caller.
✅ เมื่อฉันส่งข้อความไปแล้ว เขาก็โทรกลับมาค่ะ
muea chan song khokhwam pai laeo khao ko tho klap ma kha
After I sent a message, he called me back. (ordinary-polite narrative, female speaker; both actors explicit)
Key Takeaways
Use เมื่อ to establish a temporal frame and optional ก็ to resume the event located in that frame. Put an overt main-clause subject before ก็, keep aspect and modality inside their own clauses, and let time expressions and discourse distinguish past, future, and recurring readings. Choose ถ้า for contingency and พอ when immediate succession is central.
