In a กี่ question, the classifier does more than satisfy a word-order rule: it tells the listener what counts as one answerable unit. กาแฟกี่แก้ว asks for cups of prepared coffee, กาแฟกี่ถุง asks for bags of coffee, and กาแฟกี่ขวด asks for bottles. The noun remains กาแฟ, but the classifier changes the question.
The full pattern is noun + กี่ + classifier. Choosing the classifier therefore requires two decisions: identify the noun’s conventional class and decide how the situation packages the referent. English “how many?” leaves much of this implicit; Thai makes the unit overt.
Start with the ordinary lexical classifier
Many frequent nouns have a conventional classifier that should be learned with them. Shape gives useful clues, but lexical convention—not a perfect physical taxonomy—decides the ordinary pairing.
| Referent | Question frame | Classifier logic |
|---|---|---|
| people | ผู้สมัครกี่คน | คน, neutral human count |
| respected guests | แขกกี่ท่าน | ท่าน, respectful service/institutional count |
| animals | แมวกี่ตัว | ตัว, animals |
| books | หนังสือกี่เล่ม | เล่ม, bound volumes |
| vehicles | รถกี่คัน | คัน, vehicles |
| buildings/houses | บ้านกี่หลัง | หลัง, houses and many buildings |
| machines/appliances | เครื่องพิมพ์กี่เครื่อง | เครื่อง, machines |
| bags | กระเป๋ากี่ใบ | ใบ, many containers and flat items |
| sheets | กระดาษกี่แผ่น | แผ่น, sheets and flat pieces |
| pairs | รองเท้ากี่คู่ | คู่, paired sets |
| sets | เอกสารกี่ชุด | ชุด, assembled sets |
| occasions | ตรวจสอบกี่ครั้ง | ครั้ง, event occurrences |
มีผู้สมัครผ่านรอบแรกกี่คนคะ
mi phu samak phan rop raek ki khon kha
How many applicants passed the first round? (formal-neutral polite question, female speaker; neutral human classifier คน)
โรงแรมมีรถรับส่งกี่คันครับ
rongraem mi rot rap song ki khan khrap
How many shuttle vehicles does the hotel have? (ordinary polite question, male speaker; vehicle classifier คัน)
ต้องพิมพ์สัญญากี่ชุดคะ
tong phim sanya ki chut kha
How many sets of the contract need to be printed? (formal-neutral polite question, female speaker; assembled-copy classifier ชุด)
The noun precedes กี่, and the classifier follows it immediately. Thai does not pluralize ผู้สมัคร, รถ, or สัญญา. For the basic replacement of a number by กี่, review กี่ and classifier questions.
The intended unit can change the classifier
One substance or product can be counted by container, serving, package, piece, or set. These are not interchangeable stylistic variants: each requests a different number.
โต๊ะนี้สั่งกาแฟกี่แก้วครับ
to ni sang kafae ki kaeo khrap
How many cups of coffee did this table order? (ordinary polite service question, male speaker; servings in cups)
ลูกค้าซื้อกาแฟบดกี่ถุงคะ
luk kha sue kafae bot ki thung kha
How many bags of ground coffee did the customer buy? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; packaged bags)
ในตู้เย็นมีน้ำดื่มกี่ขวดครับ
nai tu yen mi nam duem ki khuat khrap
How many bottles of drinking water are in the refrigerator? (ordinary polite question, male speaker; bottle count)
Likewise, พิซซ่ากี่ถาด counts whole pizzas or trays in the relevant service frame, while พิซซ่ากี่ชิ้น counts slices or pieces. ยาแก้ปวดกี่เม็ด asks for tablets; ยาแก้ไอกี่ขวด asks for bottles. The classifier lets the respondent know which inventory to report.
ต้องหั่นพิซซ่าเป็นกี่ชิ้นคะ
tong han phitsa pen ki chin kha
How many pieces should the pizza be cut into? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; result pieces counted with ชิ้น)
คุณหมอให้กินยาครั้งละกี่เม็ดครับ
khun mo hai kin ya khrang la ki met khrap
How many tablets did the doctor say to take each time? (ordinary polite question, male speaker; tablets counted with เม็ด)
This is why using general อัน whenever a specific classifier is forgotten can obscure meaning. อัน is productive with many general objects and lexical pairings, but it is not a universal substitute for คน, คัน, เล่ม, or an explicit container unit. See semantic classifier choice.
Respectful human counting
คน is the ordinary neutral classifier for people. ท่าน is used as a respectful classifier in service encounters, ceremonies, formal hosting, and institutional language. It elevates the people being counted; it does not create a separate plural grammar.
การประชุมนี้มีผู้แทนกี่คนครับ
kan prachum ni mi phu thaen ki khon khrap
How many representatives are at this meeting? (formal-neutral question, male speaker; neutral count with คน)
เย็นนี้มีแขกผู้ใหญ่กี่ท่านคะ
yen ni mi khaek phu yai ki than kha
How many honored senior guests will there be this evening? (formal-respectful hosting question, female speaker; ท่าน marks respect)
Do not use ท่าน merely because English says person. It belongs where respectful reference is socially motivated. Conversely, กี่อัน for people is not just informal; it treats them with an inanimate general classifier and is inappropriate.
Shape, function, and conventional categorization
Some classifiers group objects by salient form or function. เส้น counts many long thin items, ลูก many round objects and certain fruits, แผ่น flat sheets, เครื่อง machines, and คู่ pairs. These are useful tendencies, not algorithms that predict every noun.
ต้องใช้สายไฟกี่เส้นคะ
tong chai sai fai ki sen kha
How many electrical cables do we need? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; long-item classifier เส้น)
เด็ก ๆ เอาลูกบอลมากี่ลูกครับ
dek dek ao luk bon ma ki luk khrap
How many balls did the children bring? (ordinary polite question, male speaker; round-object classifier ลูก)
ชั้นนี้มีเครื่องถ่ายเอกสารเสียกี่เครื่องคะ
chan ni mi khrueang thai ekkasan sia ki khrueang kha
How many broken photocopiers are there on this floor? (formal-neutral polite question, female speaker; machine classifier เครื่อง)
A classifier can also highlight a functional unit rather than physical shape. เอกสารสามฉบับ may count three documents or versions, while เอกสารสามชุด counts three assembled sets. There is no clean English shortcut; conventional pairings must be learned and checked.
Noun ellipsis preserves the classifier
Once the noun is established, Thai commonly omits it but keeps กี่ + classifier. The answer normally repeats number + classifier, because the classifier carries the unit forward.
ชั้นบนมีห้องว่างหลายห้อง ต้องใช้กี่ห้องคะ
chan bon mi hong wang lai hong tong chai ki hong kha
There are several vacant rooms upstairs. How many do you need? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; classifier ห้อง remains after noun ellipsis)
ใช้สองห้องครับ ห้องหนึ่งสำหรับประชุม อีกห้องสำหรับสัมภาษณ์
chai song hong khrap hong nueng samrap prachum ik hong samrap samphat
We need two rooms: one for the meeting and the other for interviews. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker)
Because ห้อง can be both the noun and its classifier, the ellipsis is not visually obvious: after ใช้, the noun is omitted and classifier ห้อง remains after กี่. With a lexically distinct pair the same pattern is clearer: after มีหนังสือใหม่ห้าเล่ม, ask คุณอ่านแล้วกี่เล่มครับ “How many have you read?” The classifier prevents the bare number from becoming ambiguous.
Information, confirmation, and repair
An open count uses กี่ + classifier. A proposed count plus ใช่ไหม requests confirmation. A repair question can repeat the classifier while asking the listener to restore the number.
รถขนส่งมาถึงกี่คันคะ
rot khon song ma thueng ki khan kha
How many delivery vehicles have arrived? (ordinary polite information question, female speaker)
มาถึงสามคันแล้วใช่ไหมครับ
ma thueng sam khan laeo chai mai khrap
Three have arrived now, right? (ordinary polite confirmation question, male speaker)
ขอโทษนะคะ เมื่อกี้บอกว่าต้องใช้กี่คันนะคะ
kho thot na kha muea ki bok wa tong chai ki khan na kha
Sorry, how many vehicles did you say we need? (polite repair request, female speaker)
The open question takes คะ/ครับ after the full classifier phrase; it does not add ไหม. The repair particle นะคะ signals that the information was previously available.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Coworkers prepare a small reception.
พรุ่งนี้มีแขกกี่ท่านคะ
phrung ni mi khaek ki than kha
How many guests will there be tomorrow? (formal-respectful hosting question, female speaker)
สิบสองท่านครับ รวมผู้บริหารสองท่าน
sip song than khrap ruam phu borihan song than
Twelve, including two executives. (formal-respectful answer, male speaker)
ต้องเตรียมโต๊ะกี่ตัวคะ
tong triam to ki tua kha
How many tables do we need to prepare? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; furniture classifier ตัว)
สามตัวครับ ตัวละสี่ที่นั่ง
sam tua khrap tua la si thi nang
Three, with four seats at each table. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker; classifier maintained and distributed with ละ)
The dialogue changes from respectful human ท่าน to furniture ตัว. The numbers alone would not express that shift in counted category.
Common Mistakes
1. Defaulting to อัน for a person
❌ งานคืนนี้มีแขกกี่อันคะ
Incorrect and dehumanizing—people take คน or respectful ท่าน, not general inanimate อัน.
✅ งานคืนนี้มีแขกกี่ท่านคะ
ngan khuen ni mi khaek ki than kha
How many guests will there be at tonight's event? (formal-respectful question, female speaker)
2. Putting กี่ before the noun
❌ คุณต้องใช้กี่รถครับ
Incorrect English-influenced order and missing vehicle classifier.
✅ คุณต้องใช้รถกี่คันครับ
khun tong chai rot ki khan khrap
How many vehicles do you need? (ordinary polite question, male speaker)
3. Choosing a shape that ignores the lexical class
❌ คุณซื้อหนังสือกี่แผ่นคะ
Incorrect for counting bound books—flat shape does not override conventional เล่ม.
✅ คุณซื้อหนังสืออ้างอิงกี่เล่มคะ
khun sue nangsue ang ing ki lem kha
How many reference books did you buy? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
4. Hiding the intended serving unit
❌ โต๊ะนี้สั่งกาแฟกี่ตัวครับ
Incorrect classifier—ตัว does not identify a coffee serving or package.
✅ โต๊ะนี้สั่งกาแฟร้อนกี่แก้วครับ
to ni sang kafae ron ki kaeo khrap
How many cups of hot coffee did this table order? (ordinary polite service question, male speaker)
5. Dropping the classifier from a full counted noun phrase
❌ ต้องเตรียมเก้าอี้ยี่สิบครับ
Incomplete full count—the number after เก้าอี้ needs the furniture classifier ตัว.
✅ ต้องเตรียมเก้าอี้ยี่สิบตัวครับ
tong triam kaoi yi sip tua khrap
We need to prepare twenty chairs. (ordinary polite statement, male speaker; full noun–number–classifier phrase)
Key Takeaways
- Build the full count question as noun + กี่ + classifier.
- Choose the classifier for the intended unit: individual, respectful person, container, serving, piece, pair, set, or occurrence.
- Shape is only a clue; conventional noun–classifier pairings still require learning.
- When the noun is recoverable, omit it if natural but retain the classifier in both question and answer.
