Thai divides English “how much/how many” according to the shape of the answer. กี่ asks for a count and normally stands immediately before a classifier or unit: ผู้เข้าร่วมกี่คน “how many participants?”, กี่วัน “how many days?” เท่าไร asks for an amount, value, degree, distance, duration, or other extent: ราคาเท่าไร “what price?”, ไกลเท่าไร “how far?”
The two forms overlap where the same reality can be framed either as a measured value or as a count of units. ราคาเท่าไร asks the price as a value; กี่บาท asks how many baht. The expected answer, not the English word much or many, is the best guide.
The core choice: count or extent
| Unknown | Productive question | Answer shape |
|---|---|---|
How many participants will there be at tomorrow's training? (ordinary polite count question, female speaker)
ประมาณยี่สิบคนครับ
praman yi sip khon khrap
About twenty people. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker; number plus classifier fills the count slot)
ค่าซ่อมทั้งหมดเท่าไรครับ
kha som thang mot thaorai khrap
How much is the total repair cost? (ordinary polite amount question, male speaker)
สองพันห้าร้อยบาทค่ะ รวมค่าแรงแล้ว
song phan ha roi bat kha ruam kha raeng laeo
Two thousand five hundred baht, including labor. (ordinary polite answer, female speaker; amount plus currency unit)
Thai keeps each interrogative in the position occupied by the answer. ยี่สิบคน becomes กี่คน, while the value after ค่าซ่อมทั้งหมด becomes เท่าไร. There is no subject inversion, auxiliary do, plural suffix, or verbal conjugation.
กี่ counts units
With an ordinary count noun, the full order is noun + กี่ + classifier. If the noun is already understood, กี่ + classifier can remain alone. Units of time and clock expressions also follow กี่ directly.
คุณยืมหนังสือไปกี่เล่มครับ
khun yuem nangsue pai ki lem khrap
How many books did you borrow? (ordinary polite count question, male speaker)
ยืมไปสี่เล่มค่ะ คืนพรุ่งนี้สองเล่ม
yuem pai si lem kha khuen phrung ni song lem
I borrowed four; I'll return two tomorrow. (ordinary polite answer, female speaker; noun omitted while classifier remains)
ต้องรอผลตรวจอีกกี่วันคะ
tong ro phon truat ik ki wan kha
How many more days do we have to wait for the test result? (ordinary polite duration-as-count question, female speaker)
อีกสามวันครับ น่าจะทราบผลวันศุกร์
ik sam wan khrap na cha sap phon wan suk
Three more days; we should know the result on Friday. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker)
งานเริ่มกี่โมงคะ
ngan roem ki mong kha
What time does the event start? (ordinary polite clock-time question, female speaker)
กี่ is not restricted by grammar to “a small number.” A speaker can ask มีผู้ชมกี่หมื่นคน “how many tens of thousands of spectators?” when a large scale is expected. In everyday bare กี่คน, pragmatics may suggest a manageable count, but that is not a numerical rule.
For the basic noun–กี่–classifier pattern, see กี่ and classifier questions.
เท่าไร asks value, degree, or extent
เท่าไร follows the expression whose value is unknown. Common frames include ราคาเท่าไร “what price,” หนักเท่าไร “how heavy,” สูงเท่าไร “how high/tall,” ไกลเท่าไร “how far,” and นานเท่าไร “how long.”
จากสถานีไปโรงแรมไกลเท่าไรครับ
chak sathani pai rongraem klai thaorai khrap
How far is it from the station to the hotel? (ordinary polite distance question, male speaker)
ประมาณสองกิโลเมตรค่ะ ถ้านั่งรถใช้เวลาสิบนาที
praman song kilomet kha tha nang rot chai wela sip nathi
About two kilometers; it takes ten minutes by car. (ordinary polite answer, female speaker)
กล่องนี้หนักเท่าไรคะ
klong ni nak thaorai kha
How much does this box weigh? (ordinary polite measurement question, female speaker)
ประมาณเจ็ดกิโลกรัมครับ
praman chet kilokram khrap
About seven kilograms. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker)
ต้องใช้เวลานานเท่าไรคะ
tong chai wela nan thaorai kha
How long will it take? (formal-neutral polite duration question, female speaker)
The predicate remains unchanged. Future interpretation in the last example comes from the practical situation; Thai does not need to add จะ merely because English uses will. An explicit future frame is possible when contrast requires it: รอบหน้าจะใช้เวลานานเท่าไร “How long will the next round take?”
Price and quantity can be framed two ways
Money shows the overlap clearly.
กาแฟแก้วนี้ราคาเท่าไรครับ
kafae kaeo ni rakha thaorai khrap
How much is this coffee? (ordinary polite price-as-value question, male speaker)
กาแฟแก้วนี้กี่บาทคะ
kafae kaeo ni ki bat kha
How many baht is this coffee? (ordinary conversational price question, female speaker; currency counted as units)
Both can receive แปดสิบบาท “eighty baht.” The first makes ราคา the unknown value; the second directly asks for a count of baht. Likewise ใช้เวลานานเท่าไร asks duration as extent, while ใช้เวลากี่ชั่วโมง asks for the number of hours. Neither is inherently more polite.
Do not insert เป็น before the amount. Thai says ราคาเท่าไร, not ราคาเป็นเท่าไร, in the ordinary price frame.
Standard เท่าไร and conversational เท่าไหร่
เท่าไร is the standard spelling and the appropriate default in edited or formal writing. เท่าไหร่ represents a widespread conversational pronunciation and is common in dialogue and informal messages. It is useful to recognize, but a formal report or examination prompt normally uses เท่าไร.
รวมแล้วเท่าไหร่คะ
ruam laeo thaorai kha
How much is it altogether? (informal conversational question, female speaker; widespread spoken เท่าไหร่)
This spelling contrast does not change the answer or syntax. It is a register choice comparable to formal-neutral อย่างไร and conversational ยังไง.
Information seeking, confirmation, and repair
An open quantity question contains กี่ or เท่าไร and expects a value. Confirmation proposes a number and uses an ending such as ใช่ไหม. Repair asks the listener to repeat a value that was already given.
สำหรับห้องอบรม ต้องเตรียมเก้าอี้กี่ตัวคะ
samrap hong oprom tong triam kaoi ki tua kha
How many chairs need to be prepared for the training room? (ordinary polite information question, female speaker; room introduced as the planning domain)
ต้องเตรียมยี่สิบตัวใช่ไหมครับ
tong triam yi sip tua chai mai khrap
We need to prepare twenty, right? (ordinary polite confirmation question, male speaker)
ขอโทษนะคะ เมื่อกี้บอกว่าค่ามัดจำเท่าไรนะคะ
kho thot na kha muea ki bok wa kha matcham thaorai na kha
Sorry, how much did you say the deposit was? (polite repair request, female speaker)
Putting ไหม after a direct กี่/เท่าไร question mixes answer types. ห้องนี้ราคาเท่าไรคะ requests a price; ห้องนี้ราคาสองพันบาทใช่ไหมคะ proposes one for confirmation.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A customer asks about storing luggage.
รับฝากกระเป๋าได้กี่ใบคะ
rap fak krapao dai ki bai kha
How many bags can you store? (ordinary polite count question, female customer)
ได้ไม่เกินสามใบต่อคนครับ
dai mai koen sam bai to khon khrap
Up to three bags per person. (ordinary polite answer, male employee)
แล้วคิดค่าฝากเท่าไรคะ
laeo khit kha fak thaorai kha
And how much do you charge for storage? (ordinary polite amount question, female speaker)
ใบละห้าสิบบาทต่อวันครับ
bai la ha sip bat to wan khrap
Fifty baht per bag per day. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker; distributive units made explicit)
The first question counts bags with ใบ. The second asks the service fee as a value. Each answer preserves the unit needed to interpret the number.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting กี่ before the noun
❌ คุณซื้อกี่หนังสือคะ
Incorrect English order and missing classifier—กี่ belongs after the noun and before its classifier.
✅ คุณซื้อหนังสือกี่เล่มคะ
khun sue nangsue ki lem kha
How many books did you buy? (ordinary polite count question, female speaker)
2. Omitting the classifier
❌ ห้องนี้พักได้กี่ครับ
Incomplete for ‘how many people’; the counted human unit must be stated.
✅ ห้องนี้พักได้กี่คนครับ
hong ni phak dai ki khon khrap
How many people can stay in this room? (ordinary polite question, male speaker)
3. Using เท่าไร for a bare count noun
❌ คุณยืมหนังสือเท่าไรเล่มคะ
Incorrect mixed frame—an ordinary book count uses กี่ before classifier เล่ม.
✅ คุณยืมหนังสือจากห้องสมุดกี่เล่มคะ
khun yuem nangsue chak hongsamut ki lem kha
How many books did you borrow from the library? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
4. Adding เป็น before a price
❌ ค่าส่งเป็นเท่าไรครับ
Unnatural ordinary price frame—เท่าไร follows the fee expression directly.
✅ ค่าส่งทั้งหมดเท่าไรครับ
kha song thang mot thaorai khrap
How much is the total shipping fee? (ordinary polite question, male speaker)
5. Adding ไหม to an open quantity question
❌ ต้องรออีกกี่วันไหมคะ
Incorrect for ‘how many more days?’—ไหม asks a polar question instead of requesting the value.
✅ ต้องรออีกกี่วันคะ
tong ro ik ki wan kha
How many more days do we have to wait? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Use กี่ + classifier/unit for a count and เท่าไร for a value, degree, or extent.
- Money and duration permit two framings: ราคาเท่าไร / กี่บาท, นานเท่าไร / กี่ชั่วโมง.
- Keep the question expression in the answer slot and retain classifiers, measurement units, and polite particles.
- เท่าไหร่ is widespread in informal speech; เท่าไร is the standard written form.
