Stating Age with อายุ and ขวบ or ปี

Thai normally states age with อายุ + number + ปี/ขวบ: อายุยี่สิบเอ็ดปี “be twenty-one years old.” There is no equivalent of inflected English “am/is/are” inside this frame. อายุ supplies the relation “age,” the cardinal gives the completed count, and ปี or ขวบ names the unit.

ปี is the general unit and works for people of every age, especially in neutral and formal contexts. ขวบ is child-oriented: the Royal Society defines its age use for children of roughly twelve and under. Adults may jokingly use ขวบ about themselves (playful informal), but that is a marked effect, not the neutral alternative to ปี.

The basic อายุ frame

Put the person or topic first when it needs to be stated, then อายุ, the complete cardinal, and the age unit. Thai does not require a subject pronoun when the person is already clear.

ผมอายุยี่สิบเอ็ดปีครับ

phom ayu yi sip et pi khrap

I am twenty-one years old. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

คุณยายอายุเจ็ดสิบแปดปีค่ะ

khun yai ayu chet sip paet pi kha

Grandmother is seventy-eight years old. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

อายุสามสิบสองปีค่ะ

ayu sam sip song pi kha

I am thirty-two years old. (polite, female speaker; subject omitted because the question establishes it)

The final one in ยี่สิบเอ็ด follows the normal careful cardinal rule explained on the final-one page. ปี does not cause เอ็ด; the number itself ends in 1. Thai verbs and predicates do not agree with the person or change form for age.

💡
Do not search for a Thai form of English “to be” in an age statement. อายุ already creates the age relation: ผมอายุยี่สิบเอ็ดปี, not ผมเป็นยี่สิบเอ็ดปี.

ปี: the general and formal choice

Use ปี with adults, with statistical ages, and whenever the register is neutral or (formal). It is also fully correct for children. Forms and eligibility rules often use อายุ...ปี because ปี is an ordinary time unit that supports exact administrative measurement.

ผู้สมัครต้องมีอายุอย่างน้อยสิบแปดปีค่ะ

phu samak tong mi ayu yang noi sip paet pi kha

Applicants must be at least eighteen years old. (formal-polite eligibility statement, female speaker)

ลูกชายอายุห้าปีแล้วครับ

luk chai ayu ha pi laeo khrap

My son is five years old now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; ปี is also correct for a child)

แพทย์ถามอายุเป็นปีและเดือนค่ะ

phaet tham ayu pen pi lae duean kha

The doctor asks for age in years and months. (formal-polite medical context, female speaker)

In ผู้สมัครอายุสิบแปดปี, ผู้สมัคร is the person whose age is measured. In เด็กอายุห้าปี, the whole อายุ phrase modifies เด็ก: “a child aged five.” Thai builds this relation as a phrase rather than changing “five” into an adjective like English “five-year-old.”

เด็กอายุห้าปีสองคนรออยู่หน้าห้องค่ะ

dek ayu ha pi song khon ro yu na hong kha

Two five-year-old children are waiting outside the room. (polite, female speaker)

Here อายุห้าปี describes เด็ก, while สองคน independently counts the two children. Do not attach a person classifier inside the age itself.

ขวบ: the child-oriented unit

ขวบ means a yearly cycle and functions as a conventional age unit for children, approximately age twelve and below. It sounds especially natural when parents, relatives, teachers, or health workers talk about a young child. ปี remains possible; the difference is viewpoint and register, not arithmetic.

ExpressionNatural useRegister
ลูกอายุสามขวบyoung child in family conversationneutral everyday
เด็กอายุสามปีgeneral or administrative descriptionneutral / formal
ผมอายุสามสิบขวบadult deliberately speaking like a childplayful informal

หลานเพิ่งอายุหนึ่งขวบค่ะ

lan phoeng ayu nueng khuap kha

My grandchild has just turned one. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

น้องอายุสิบเอ็ดขวบแล้วครับ

nong ayu sip et khuap laeo khrap

The younger child is eleven years old now. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

เด็กอายุสี่ขวบควรนอนให้เพียงพอค่ะ

dek ayu si khuap khuan non hai phiangpho kha

A four-year-old child should get enough sleep. (neutral health guidance, polite female speaker)

Calling a forty-year-old สี่สิบขวบ can be humorous or affectionate (playful informal). Without that intention, use สี่สิบปี.

💡
Choose ขวบ because the person is being viewed as a child, not because ขวบ is a mandatory classifier. ปี is grammatically available at every age and is the safer formal choice.

Asking age and managing social context

The ordinary grammatical question is อายุเท่าไร. Add the person when needed: ลูกอายุเท่าไร “How old is your child?” Because an adult’s age can be personal, grammatical correctness does not guarantee social appropriateness. In service or medical settings, explaining why the information is needed makes the question more considerate.

ลูกสาวอายุเท่าไรแล้วคะ

luk sao ayu thaorai laeo kha

How old is your daughter now? (polite question, female speaker)

ห้าขวบครับ เพิ่งครบเมื่อเดือนที่แล้ว

ha khuap khrap phoeng khrop muea duean thi laeo

She is five. She just turned five last month. (polite reply, male speaker; subject omitted)

The reply does not repeat ลูกสาว or อายุ. Thai permits zero anaphora because the question keeps both recoverable.

ครบ, เต็ม, and ย่างเข้า

An unmodified age such as อายุห้าปี conventionally reports completed age: five birthdays have passed. Three extra expressions sharpen the boundary.

  • ครบห้าปี / ครบห้าขวบ means “reach five years,” focusing on the fifth anniversary or eligibility threshold.
  • ห้าปีเต็ม / ห้าขวบเต็ม means “a full five years,” emphasizing that the count is fully completed. It is common in (formal) admission and benefit rules.
  • ย่างเข้าปีที่หก literally means “enter the sixth year”: five years have been completed and the sixth year of life has begun. In casual speech, people sometimes use ย่าง loosely for “approaching,” so official rules must be read according to their stated definition.

ลูกอายุครบห้าขวบวันนี้ค่ะ

luk ayu khrop ha khuap wan ni kha

My child turns five today. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; threshold reached today)

ผู้สมัครต้องมีอายุหกปีเต็มในวันเปิดภาคเรียนครับ

phu samak tong mi ayu hok pi tem nai wan poet phakrian khrap

The applicant must be a full six years old on the first day of term. (formal-polite eligibility statement, male speaker)

ลูกอายุครบห้าปีแล้ว ตอนนี้ย่างเข้าปีที่หกค่ะ

luk ayu khrop ha pi laeo ton ni yang khao pi thi hok kha

My child has completed five years and has now entered the sixth year of life. (careful explanatory use, female speaker)

Do not equate ย่างเข้าปีที่หก with the completed age หกปี. If exact eligibility matters, a birth date or the phrase ครบ...ปีบริบูรณ์ is clearer than casual ย่าง.

💡
For a legal, medical, or admission threshold, ครบ...ปี or ...ปีเต็ม is clearer than conversational ย่าง. ย่างเข้า counts the year of life being entered, not simply the last birthday completed.

Common Mistakes

1. Copying English “be” with เป็น

❌ ฉันเป็นยี่สิบห้าปีค่ะ

Incorrect English transfer—เป็น does not link a person to an age number.

✅ ฉันอายุยี่สิบห้าปีค่ะ

chan ayu yi sip ha pi kha

I am twenty-five years old. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

2. Putting the unit before the number

❌ ลูกอายุขวบสามครับ

Incorrect order—the age unit follows the complete cardinal.

✅ ลูกอายุสามขวบครับ

luk ayu sam khuap khrap

My child is three years old. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

3. Using ขวบ neutrally for an adult

❌ ผู้จัดการอายุสี่สิบขวบค่ะ

Marked as childlike or joking; it is not the neutral adult-age expression.

✅ ผู้จัดการอายุสี่สิบปีค่ะ

phu chatkan ayu si sip pi kha

The manager is forty years old. (neutral polite statement, female speaker)

4. Reading 21 with หนึ่ง at the end

❌ พี่ชายอายุยี่สิบหนึ่งปีครับ

Incorrect careful cardinal formation—21 is ยี่สิบเอ็ด.

✅ พี่ชายอายุยี่สิบเอ็ดปีครับ

phi chai ayu yi sip et pi khrap

My older brother is twenty-one years old. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

5. Confusing a year entered with completed age

❌ ย่างเข้าปีที่หกแปลว่าอายุครบหกปีแล้ว

Incorrect—entering the sixth year means five full years have been completed.

✅ ตอนนี้อายุครบห้าปีและย่างเข้าปีที่หกค่ะ

ton ni ayu khrop ha pi lae yang khao pi thi hok kha

The child is now five full years old and has entered the sixth year of life. (careful explanatory use, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

Use อายุ + cardinal + ปี/ขวบ without เป็น. ปี is general and formal; ขวบ frames someone as a child, conventionally around twelve or under. Bare ages report completed years, ครบ and เต็ม make a threshold explicit, and ย่างเข้า names the year of life being entered. Thai relies on phrase structure, number formation, and discourse omission rather than English copulas or adjective inflection.
