ให้ as Complementizer and Desired-Event Marker

Thai ให้ can introduce an event that someone wants, requests, permits, orders, or causes to happen. In ฉันอยากให้เขากลับบ้าน “I want him to go home,” ให้ opens the desired event เขากลับบ้าน. It does not mean lexical “give” there, and it is not interchangeable with content-clause ว่า.

English packages comparable meanings with to, for … to, a bare infinitive, or a finite that-clause. Thai instead uses the matrix predicate, ให้, and the order of participants. The lower subject is overt when it must be identified, but it may be omitted when the addressee or actor is already recoverable.

The productive ให้-subordination frame

The central pattern is matrix subject + matrix predicate + ให้ + lower subject + lower predicate. Different matrix predicates change the force of the relation while leaving the lower-event slot productive.

Matrix frameCore meaningProductive continuationRegister and force
อยากให้…want an event to happenactor + predicateordinary
ต้องการให้…require or formally wantactor + predicateformal-neutral, direct
ขอให้…request or wish(actor) + predicatepolite to formal; force depends on context
บอก + addressee + ให้… / สั่งให้…tell or order someone to act(actor) + predicate; an addressee may control an omitted actorบอก ordinary; สั่ง forceful
อนุญาตให้…permit an eventactor + predicateneutral to formal
ทำให้…cause a resultaffected participant + predicateordinary to formal; causative, not desire

อยากให้ฝนหยุดก่อนงานเริ่มค่ะ

yak hai fon yut kon ngan roem kha

I want the rain to stop before the event starts. (ordinary-polite wish, female speaker)

บริษัทต้องการให้ผู้สมัครส่งเอกสารเพิ่มครับ

borisat tongkan hai phu samak song ekkasan phoem khrap

The company requires the applicants to submit additional documents. (formal-neutral workplace statement, male speaker)

ครูอนุญาตให้นักเรียนกลับก่อนเวลาได้ครับ

khru anuyat hai nak rian klap kon wela dai khrap

The teacher allowed the students to leave early. (neutral-polite report, male speaker)

The rain in the first example is not an intentional agent. That matters: อยากให้ marks a desired situation, not necessarily an instruction or an act of making someone comply. Matrix semantics determine whether the lower event is merely wished for, authorized, directed, or caused.

💡
Translate the whole frame, not ให้ by itself. อยากให้ means “want [an event],” อนุญาตให้ means “allow [an event],” and ทำให้ means “cause [a result].” The English word changes because the Thai construction changes.

Same actor versus a new lower subject

With อยาก, a bare following predicate normally describes what the matrix subject wants to do. Adding ให้ + subject introduces a desired event whose actor or experiencer is separately identified.

ฉันอยากพักก่อนค่ะ

chan yak phak kon kha

I want to rest first. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker; same understood actor)

ฉันอยากให้เขาพักก่อนค่ะ

chan yak hai khao phak kon kha

I want him to rest first. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker; new lower subject)

This is not simply optional deletion of ให้. อยากพัก and อยากให้เขาพัก instantiate different complement patterns. If a distinct lower subject is expressed, standard Central Thai requires the ให้ frame after อยาก.

Directive predicates allow two closely related participant layouts. With บอก, a named addressee commonly precedes ให้ and also controls the omitted lower subject: บอกทีมให้เริ่ม “tell the team to start.” With สั่งให้ and ขอให้, the actor can instead appear directly after ให้, as ผม does below.

หัวหน้าสั่งให้ผมแก้รายงานใหม่ครับ

huana sang hai phom kae rai ngan mai khrap

The supervisor ordered me to revise the report. (forceful workplace report, male speaker)

เจ้าหน้าที่ขอให้รอสักครู่นะคะ

chao nathi kho hai ro sak khru na kha

The staff member asks you to wait a moment, please. (ordinary-polite service request, female speaker; lower subject omitted)

In the service request, the addressee is situationally obvious. Thai need not insert an obligatory equivalent of English you. The linker ให้, however, remains because it signals that waiting is the requested event.

Request, order, permission, and wish

The construction itself does not determine politeness. สั่งให้ explicitly reports an order; ขอให้ can make a request or express a formulaic wish; อนุญาตให้ grants permission. Particles and setting further calibrate the utterance.

ขอให้ทุกคนปิดเสียงโทรศัพท์ด้วยค่ะ

kho hai thuk khon pit siang thorasap duai kha

Everyone, please silence your phones. (polite public request, female speaker)

ขอให้โชคดีในการเดินทางนะครับ

kho hai chok di nai kan doen thang na khrap

Best of luck on your trip. (warm polite wish, male speaker)

The first ขอให้ aims to influence conduct; the second expresses a hoped-for outcome. English uses different surface formulas, but Thai lets context, the lower predicate, and particles distinguish them. In highly formal announcements, ขอให้ remains common; in close conversation it may sound gently polite rather than bureaucratic.

💡
Do not infer force from ให้ alone. Identify the matrix predicate first: อยาก presents desire, ขอ presents a request or wish, สั่ง presents authority, อนุญาต presents permission, and ทำ presents causation.

Information with ว่า versus a desired event with ให้

ว่า reports a proposition; ให้ presents an event to be realized. With บอก, placing the addressee before ให้ also links that participant to the requested action.

ผู้จัดการบอกว่าทีมเริ่มงานได้แล้วค่ะ

phu chatkan bok wa thim roem ngan dai laeo kha

The manager said that the team could start work now. (ordinary-polite information report, female speaker)

ผู้จัดการบอกทีมให้เริ่มงานได้แล้วค่ะ

phu chatkan bok thim hai roem ngan dai laeo kha

The manager told the team to start work now. (ordinary-polite directive report, female speaker)

The ว่า sentence can be true even if the manager is merely passing on news. The ให้ sentence makes the team the addressee and understood actor of the instructed event. See ว่า complements for information structure and ให้ complements for their place among predicate chains.

Scope of negation

Negation before อยาก rejects the desire for the whole lower event. Negation inside the lower clause makes the negative situation itself the desired content.

ผมไม่อยากให้เขารอครับ

phom mai yak hai khao ro khrap

I don't want him to wait. (ordinary-polite statement, male speaker; desire negated)

ผมอยากให้เขาไม่ต้องรอครับ

phom yak hai khao mai tong ro khrap

I want him not to have to wait. (ordinary-polite statement, male speaker; negative necessity inside the desired event)

The first speaker rejects wanting the waiting event; context decides what the speaker positively prefers. The second explicitly desires a situation in which waiting is unnecessary. Thai has no special subjunctive verb form here: linear position and lexical modality reveal the scope.

ให้ is not always subordination

The same written form also functions as lexical “give,” a benefactive marker, and a causative linker. Participant order and predicate frame distinguish them.

ConstructionExample skeletonInterpretation
transferให้ + theme + recipientgive something to someone
benefactiveaction + theme + ให้ + beneficiarydo something for someone
subordinationmatrix predicate + ให้ + lower eventwant, request, permit, direct, or cause an event

พี่ให้หนังสือฉันสองเล่มค่ะ

phi hai nangsue chan song lem kha

My older sibling gave me two books. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker; lexical transfer)

พี่ซื้อหนังสือให้ฉันสองเล่มค่ะ

phi sue nangsue hai chan song lem kha

My older sibling bought two books for me. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker; benefactive)

พี่อยากให้ฉันอ่านหนังสือสองเล่มนี้ค่ะ

phi yak hai chan an nangsue song lem ni kha

My older sibling wants me to read these two books. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker; desired-event subordination)

The classifier phrase หนังสือสองเล่ม belongs with the theme in the first two examples. In the third, ฉัน immediately after ให้ is the subject of อ่าน. For fuller valency analysis, compare causative ให้ and benefactive ให้.

A short office dialogue

ลูกค้าต้องการให้เราแก้อะไรบ้างคะ

luk kha tongkan hai rao kae arai bang kha

What does the customer want us to revise? (ordinary-polite workplace question, female speaker)

เขาขอให้เราแก้ราคาแล้วส่งใหม่วันนี้ครับ

khao kho hai rao kae rakha laeo song mai wan ni khrap

They asked us to revise the price and resend it today. (ordinary-polite workplace reply, male speaker)

The overt lower subject เรา identifies the team responsible for both แก้ and ส่ง. The two lower predicates share that actor and follow the order of the intended actions; no English infinitive marker or repeated pronoun is needed.

Common Mistakes

1. Using ว่า after อยาก for another person's action

❌ ฉันอยากว่าเขามาเร็วค่ะ

Incorrect—อยาก does not use ว่า to introduce a desired event with its own subject.

✅ ฉันอยากให้เขามาเร็วค่ะ

chan yak hai khao ma reo kha

I want him to come early. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)

2. Dropping ให้ before an overt lower subject

❌ ฉันอยากเขามาช่วยค่ะ

Incorrect in standard Central Thai—the distinct lower subject เขา requires the อยากให้ frame.

✅ ฉันอยากให้เขามาช่วยค่ะ

chan yak hai khao ma chuai kha

I want him to come help. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)

3. Copying the English double-object order

❌ เธอซื้อฉันกาแฟค่ะ

Incorrect for ‘she bought me coffee’—Thai cannot copy the English recipient–theme double-object order here.

✅ เธอซื้อกาแฟให้ฉันค่ะ

thoe sue kafae hai chan kha

She bought coffee for me. (ordinary-polite statement, female speaker)

💡
When parsing ให้, look rightward. A noun followed by a predicate—ให้เขารอ—strongly supports lower-subject analysis; a theme followed by a recipient—ให้หนังสือฉัน—supports transfer; an earlier action plus ให้ + person—ซื้อหนังสือให้ฉัน—supports a beneficiary.

Key Takeaways

Use ให้ + lower event after predicates of desire, request, permission, direction, and causation. A bare predicate after อยาก normally shares the matrix subject; a separately named lower subject requires อยากให้. Recoverable lower subjects can be omitted, but ให้ remains as the event linker. Negation takes scope from its position, and the matrix predicate—not ให้ alone—determines whether the event is wished for, requested, permitted, ordered, or caused.
