The verb volver means "to return" or "to come back". It is an o→ue stem-changing verb in the present and subjunctive. The preterite is regular (unlike dormir/morir), but its past participle is irregular: vuelto.

Volver is very common in daily speech. Besides its literal meaning, it forms the periphrasis volver a + infinitive, which means "to do something again" — a very frequent pattern in Latin American Spanish.

The irregular past participle vuelto is used in all compound tenses: he vuelto, había vuelto, etc.

The structure volver a + infinitive is the most natural way to express "to do something again" in Spanish. Although you can say otra vez, native speakers often prefer volver a: Volví a verlo sounds more fluent than Lo vi otra vez.
