The verb contar has two closely related meanings: "to count" (numbers, items) and "to tell" (a story, a secret). It is an o→ue stem-changing verb, and because it's an -ar verb, the only irregularity is the stem change in the present and subjunctive.

Contar is an essential verb for narration — contar una historia ("to tell a story") — and for the useful expression contar con ("to count on" someone).

Contar bridges two English verbs: "count" and "tell". Context usually makes it clear, but when the object is a story, a secret, or information, it means "tell": ¿Me cuentas un cuento? = "Will you tell me a story?"
