Jugar: Full Conjugation

The verb jugar means "to play" (games, sports). It is the only Spanish verb with a u→ue stem change, making it a unique curiosity in the language. In addition, because its stem ends in -g-, the preterite yo form undergoes a spelling change to jugué (to keep the hard "g" sound).

In Spanish, jugar is used for games and sports, not for playing music — that's tocar. In most of Latin America, you say jugar al or simply jugar + sport, e.g., jugar fútbol.

  • Jugar limpio — to play fair

Jugar is used for games and sports; tocar is used for playing musical instruments. So you juegas al tenis but tocas la guitarra. Mixing these up is a very common beginner mistake!

Jugar's spelling changes parallel those of empezar and its u→ue stem change is unique, but resembles the o→ue pattern of encontrar.
