Empezar: Full Conjugation

The verb empezar means "to begin" or "to start". It combines two irregularities: it is an e→ie stem-changing verb in the present, and because it ends in -zar, the z changes to c before e — so the yo preterite is empecé and all present subjunctive forms use empiec-.

Empezar is a near-synonym of comenzar (which follows the exact same pattern). Both are extremely common and often followed by the preposition a when linking to an infinitive: empezar a + infinitive.
