Ayudar: Full Conjugation | Spanish (Latin America) Grammar

Ayudar means "to help" and is a regular -ar verb. It's one of the most common everyday verbs in Spanish, and the construction ayudar a alguien a hacer algo ("to help someone do something") appears in countless daily sentences.

The most important thing to remember about ayudar is its prepositions: you ayudas a a person, and you ayudas a do something. That little a is mandatory — dropping it sounds wrong to native ears.

Notice the written accent on ayúdame: when a pronoun attaches to an affirmative command, you usually need to add a tilde to preserve the original stress.

Common Uses

Ayudar almost always takes the preposition a before a person or another infinitive: ayudar a alguien, ayudar a hacer algo. The noun form ayuda ("help, aid") comes from the same root.

Ella me está ayudando con la tarea.

She is helping me with the homework.

Ayudar a los demás nos hace felices.

Helping others makes us happy.

Never skip the a in ayudar a alguien. Saying ayudo mi hermano sounds clearly wrong; the correct form is ayudo a mi hermano. This is true even when the person comes right after the verb.
