Dar means "to give" — the core verb of transfer and giving. Despite being an -ar verb, it takes -er/-ir-style preterite endings, which is one of its most distinctive irregularities. Dar appears in an enormous range of set expressions: dar un paseo ("to take a walk"), darse cuenta ("to realize"), dar miedo ("to scare"), dar igual ("to not matter").

Dar is a short, unusual verb: the present has the irregular yo form doy, and the preterite looks just like ver (di, diste, dio, dimos, dieron) with no accents on the one-syllable forms.

Even though dar is an -ar verb, its preterite uses -er/-ir endings. Note that di and dio are written without accents (they're monosyllables under the modern rules).

The imperfect is completely regular — one of the few tenses where dar behaves normally.

The yo and él forms take a written accent (dé) to distinguish the verb from the preposition de.

Common Errors (for English speakers)

❌ Do un libro a Juan. / ✅ Doy un libro a Juan. / Le doy un libro a Juan. — The yo form is doy, and Spanish typically prefers the indirect object pronoun le.
❌ Realizo que estaba equivocado. / ✅ Me di cuenta de que estaba equivocado. — Use darse cuenta de for "to realize," not realizar (which means "to carry out, to perform").
❌ Dí mi opinión. / ✅ Di mi opinión. — The first-person preterite di takes no accent.
❌ Me da pena de él. / ⚠️ Me da pena (que esté así). — Be careful with the structure of dar pena.
