This route orders existing guide pages; it does not introduce replacement rules. Use every exact slug below for its full explanation, examples, and register constraints. Begin only after meeting the A2 exit check.
Intermediate Malay is not simply a larger vocabulary of interchangeable affixed forms. B1 progress depends on choosing what each clauseβand then the connected discourseβis about while keeping its participants recoverable. The pathway therefore cycles from form to valency, from valency to information structure, and from individual clauses to reports and narratives.
Cluster 1: Make meN- allomorphy automatic in useful clauses
morphology/men/formationmorphology/men/meaningmorphology/men/usagelearner-errors/nasal-allomorphslearner-errors/men-usagevoice-valency/men/overviewvoice-valency/men/argumentsvoice-valency/men/choice
This is retrieval training, not a first exposure. Formation and meaning come before the two error clinics; argument tracking and construction choice follow once the forms are stable.
Milestone 1
Select fifteen unfamiliar roots from your reading. Predict the actor-voice form, verify it against a reliable dictionary or the linked family page, and place every verified form in an original clause. Then give a one-minute spoken update containing at least eight of them without pausing to recite an allomorph rule.
Pegawai itu menyusun fail, memeriksa borang, dan menghantar salinan kepada pengurus.
The officer arranged the files, checked the forms, and sent a copy to the manager. (neutral workplace report; meN- retrieval milestone)
Saya mencari kunci sambil membawa semua beg ke kereta.
I looked for the keys while carrying all the bags to the car. (neutral narrative; multiple verified allomorphs)
Cluster 2: Contrast -kan and -i through argument structure
morphology/kan/formationvoice-valency/kan/overviewmorphology/i/formationvoice-valency/i/overviewvoice-valency/kan/argumentsvoice-valency/i/argumentsvoice-valency/kan-vs-i/overviewvoice-valency/kan-vs-i/argumentsvoice-valency/kan-vs-i/choicedecision-guides/kan-ilearner-errors/kan-i
The individual formations and overviews precede their argument pages; only then do the contrast pages ask you to choose. Some pages carry B2 labels because this contrast continues beyond B1. At this stage, prioritize the high-frequency families explicitly covered there and keep a correction log for lexical restrictions.
Milestone 2
Construct eight paired situations in which the same root family appears with a different participant profile. Draw an arrow from the verb to the participant that follows it, then narrate four pairs without the diagram. Minimum active production: sixteen clauses and eight complete English paraphrases checked against the event you intended.
Pengurus memindahkan mesyuarat itu ke hari Isnin.
The manager moved the meeting to Monday. (neutral; -kan valency milestone)
Kami mengunjungi pelanggan itu di rumahnya.
We visited that customer at his home. (neutral; -i valency milestone)
Cluster 3: Use voice to build object relatives
voice-valency/object-voice/overviewvoice-valency/object-voice/argumentsdecision-guides/passiveslearner-errors/object-voicelearner-errors/passive-agentsyntax-relatives/relative-overviewsyntax-relatives/subject-relativessyntax-relatives/constituencysyntax-relatives/object-relatives
Object-voice argument order and the passive decision come before the relative-clause extension. The general and subject-relative pages establish the yang frame; constituency helps you see the noun phrase boundary before the object-relative page asks voice to support extraction.
Milestone 3
Write ten noun phrases that distinguish similar people, documents, or places. Five must contain subject relatives and five object relatives. Embed all ten in a customer-service or workplace exchange, then check whether every actor remains recoverable.
Ini dokumen yang pegawai itu semak semalam.
This is the document that the officer checked yesterday. (neutral; object-relative milestone)
Pelanggan yang membuat aduan itu sudah kami hubungi.
We have contacted the customer who made that complaint. (neutral; relative clause plus object voice)
Cluster 4: Control aspect, negation, and focus scope
tam/overviewtam/time-referencelearner-errors/tense-calquetam/sudahtam/belumtam/pernahtam/sedangtam/lagitam/barutam/ordernegative-clauses/scopeordering/focus
This deliberate review starts from time reference before adding more markers. Ordering precedes negative and focus scope so that you can diagnose which constituent each item takes within its reach. The B2-labeled scope pages are supported stretch material essential to the B1 discourse goal.
Milestone 4
Take one six-event story and create four versions: an eyewitness update, a report of completed events, an account of prior experience, and a correction of what did not happen. Keep the event order constant so that changes in aspect and scope are audible.
Saya belum pernah menaiki feri itu, tetapi adik saya sudah dua kali pergi.
I have never yet taken that ferry, but my younger sibling has gone twice. (neutral; experiential and completion scope milestone)
Dia bukan baru menghantar borang itu; dia baru menerima balasan.
It isn't that she just sent the form; she has just received a reply. (careful corrective contrast; scope milestone)
Cluster 5: Link clauses before building long discourse
linkers/dan-sertalinkers/tetapi-namunlinkers/karena-sebablinkers/conditionlinkers/before-afterlinkers/purposeclause-linking/clause-combiningclause-linking/cause-resultclause-linking/purposeclause-linking/conditionalslinkers/resultlinkers/timelinkers/concession
High-frequency linker pages precede the complex-clause map. The later pages revisit semantic relations at discourse depth and add B1 alternatives. Keep formal and informal labels from the source pages attached to every item in your notes.
Milestone 5
Turn twelve isolated clauses into a coherent explanation containing addition, contrast, reason, result, condition, time, purpose, and concession. Then cut the text back to six sentences without losing any event or participant.
Cluster 6: Use particles as interactional choices
registers/overviewregisters/careful-spokenregisters/casual-spokenspoken-particles/lahspoken-particles/kanspoken-particles/yaspoken-particles/kotspoken-particles/nispoken-particles/tuspoken-particles/tauinteraction/agreementinteraction/backchannelslearner-errors/register-particles
Register pages precede the particles because a particle inventory without situational calibration is misleading. Finish with interactive functions and the error clinic, not with isolated translations.
Milestone 6
Annotate a recorded or scripted eight-turn casual exchange for particle position, contour, common ground, and interpersonal effect. Reperform it naturally, then produce a careful spoken version that preserves the speakers' intentions without copying every particle.
Awak dah telefon dia, kan? Dia tunggu jawapan, tau.
You've called her, right? She's waiting for an answer, you know. (informal; shared-knowledge and emphatic-reminder milestone)
Cluster 7: Report words and thoughts accurately
clause-linking/direct-quotationrumi/quotationlinkers/bahwasyntax-relatives/bahwa-complementsclause-linking/reported-speechverb-families/kataverb-families/tanyaverb-families/jawab
Direct quotation and punctuation precede indirect reporting. The bahawa pages establish content clauses before the reported-speech synthesis. Verb families come last as lexical consolidation, after you know which complement patterns they enter.
Milestone 7
Interview someone for five minutes. Write three exact quotations and a 150-word indirect report, preserving who said, asked, believed, or denied each proposition. Then retell the report orally without reading it.
Nadia berkata bahawa dia akan menghantar laporan itu selepas makan tengah hari.
Nadia said that she would send the report after lunch. (neutral/careful; reported-speech milestone)
Cluster 8: Produce structured narratives
text-cohesion/sequencetext-cohesion/additiontext-cohesion/contrasttext-cohesion/cause-resulttext-cohesion/examplestext-cohesion/stanceordering/frontingordering/topic-commenttext-cohesion/narrativereadings/folktalereadings/meeting
Sentence-level relations come first, followed by stance and information structure. The B2 narrative overview is a supported capstone before two contrasting annotated genres: story and workplace meeting.
Milestone 8 and minimum B1 production goal
Produce one 250-word narrative and one 250-word workplace account. Each must maintain a recoverable participant chain, vary voice for discourse purpose, include reported speech, and use at least six linker or cohesion choices. Record a two-minute oral version of each.
Your full B1 portfolio must contain at least 140 original sentences, four 200β300-word connected texts, six recordings of 90 seconds or more, and two register transformations. At least forty clauses must demonstrate an explicit voice, valency, scope, or reference choice you can explain.
Two compulsory review loops
Review loop 1: allomorph β valency β relative
After Cluster 3, return to morphology/men/formation, voice-valency/kan-vs-i/arguments, and voice-valency/object-voice/arguments. Select six corrected verbs from your log, build clauses with clear participant roles, and turn the objects of three clauses into heads of object relatives. Recheck every deleted root consonant and agent position.
Review loop 2: scope β report β narrative
After Cluster 8, return to tam/order, negative-clauses/scope, clause-linking/reported-speech, and ordering/topic-comment. Revise your earlier interview report twice: once around the interviewee as discourse topic and once around the disputed proposition. Compare aspect scope, voice, and reference chains.
Common Mistakes
These pairs identify the page cluster to revisit; consult that cluster for the explanation.
Preserving a root consonant that the selected meN- pattern deletes
β Pegawai itu mentulis laporan.
Incorrect allomorph; revisit morphology/men/formation and learner-errors/nasal-allomorphs.
β Pegawai itu menulis laporan.
The officer is writing a report. (neutral; correct meN- form from tulis)
Guessing -kan and -i from the same English translation
β Kami mengunjungkan pelanggan itu semalam.
Incorrect lexical and valency choice; revisit voice-valency/i/overview and decision-guides/kan-i.
β Kami mengunjungi pelanggan itu semalam.
We visited that customer yesterday. (neutral; locative/target-oriented -i family)
Leaving meN- inside a first-person object relative
β Inilah fail yang saya menghantar semalam.
Incorrect object-relative voice; revisit syntax-relatives/object-relatives and learner-errors/object-voice.
β Inilah fail yang saya hantar semalam.
This is the file that I sent yesterday. (neutral; object relative with first-person object voice)
Reproducing casual particles in formal reporting
β Pengurus berkata bahawa laporan itu dah siap, kan.
Register is mixed for a formal written report; revisit clause-linking/reported-speech and learner-errors/register-particles.
β Pengurus menyatakan bahawa laporan itu telah siap.
The manager stated that the report was complete. (formal written report)
Exit check
Move to the B2 path when you can explain why a connected account chooses a particular voice, valency pattern, aspect scope, linker, and reference expression. The test is not how many affixed words you know; it is whether a listener can follow the people, propositions, and event relations across several minutes or paragraphs.
Key Takeaways
B1 is a discourse-control stage: retrieve allomorphs inside clauses, use valency and voice to preserve participant roles, manage scope, and connect propositions through particles, reports, and narratives. The two review loops test whether those choices survive transformation rather than remaining isolated exercises.
