Cause, Reason, and Result Chains in Malaysian Malay

Cause and result describe the same event chain from opposite directions. A reason clause looks backward from an event to its source: “The road was closed because the river overflowed.” A result clause looks forward from a situation to its endpoint: “The river overflowed so much that the road was closed.” A discourse conclusion is the writer's inference from one sentence to the next: “The river overflowed. Therefore, the road was closed.”

Malay keeps these relations grammatically distinct. Kerana and sebab introduce causes, sehingga and sampai lead toward results or endpoints, while akibatnya and oleh sebab itu connect a preceding fact to a textual consequence. Choosing the direction first is more reliable than translating an English connector word by word.

A three-part map

RelationQuestion answeredCommon markerDirection
reason/causeWhy did X happen?kerana, sebabeffect ← cause
result/endpointWhat did X lead to?sehingga, sampaicause → effect
discourse conclusionWhat follows from the previous statement?akibatnya, oleh sebab itustatement ⇒ conclusion

The following examples describe one event from all three perspectives:

Jalan utama ditutup kerana sungai melimpah.

The main road was closed because the river overflowed.

Sungai melimpah sehingga jalan utama terpaksa ditutup.

The river overflowed to the point that the main road had to be closed.

Sungai melimpah. Akibatnya, jalan utama terpaksa ditutup.

The river overflowed. As a result, the main road had to be closed.

The real-world sequence is identical. What changes is how the speaker packages it: reason inside one sentence, result inside one sentence, or consequence across sentences.

Kerana and sebab: introducing the causal source

Kerana is the neutral standard conjunction for a reason clause. It is appropriate in speech and edited writing.

Kami menangguhkan perjalanan kerana cuaca semakin buruk.

We postponed the journey because the weather was getting worse.

The reason may follow the result, as above, or be fronted when it is already the discourse frame:

Kerana bekalan elektrik terputus, semua urusan kaunter dihentikan sementara.

Because the electricity supply was cut off, all counter services were temporarily suspended.

Sebab is historically and currently also a noun meaning “cause/reason”: sebab kelewatan “the reason for the delay.” It is widely used as a conjunction in Malaysian conversation (informal/neutral spoken). Formal prose often chooses kerana, or uses a fuller nominal construction such as disebabkan oleh “caused by.”

Saya balik awal sebab anak saya demam.

I went home early because my child had a fever. (informal)

Kelewatan itu disebabkan oleh kerosakan pada sistem isyarat.

The delay was caused by a fault in the signalling system. (formal)

Do not assume the variants used in Indonesian are interchangeable with Malaysian standard usage. In Malaysian Malay the conjunction is spelled kerana, not Indonesian karena.

💡
Use kerana + clause as the safe all-purpose reason pattern. Use conjunctional sebab freely in ordinary conversation, but distinguish it from the noun sebab and prefer a more explicit construction in highly formal prose.

Nominal causes: analyse the relation, not just the next word

English freely puts a noun phrase after because of, due to, or as a result of. Malay also permits compact phrases such as kerana banjir “because of the flood,” but the writer should know whether the noun names a cause, an effect, or the reason as a concept.

Perlawanan dibatalkan kerana hujan lebat.

The match was cancelled because of heavy rain.

Pembatalan perlawanan itu berlaku akibat hujan lebat.

The cancellation of the match occurred as a result of heavy rain.

Sebab pembatalan perlawanan itu masih belum dijelaskan.

The reason for the cancellation of the match has not yet been explained.

In the first sentence, kerana relates an event to its cause. In the second, akibat is a noun/prepositional relator meaning “result/consequence of,” often suggesting an adverse outcome. In the third, sebab itself is the head noun. Dense formal prose may use oleh sebab, disebabkan oleh, or berikutan where the exact nominal relation must be unmistakable.

Avoid tautological stacks such as kerana akibat banjir when all that is meant is “because of flooding.” The first word marks cause while the second names a result, so the logical structure becomes muddy.

Sehingga: reaching a boundary or consequence

Sehingga points to a limit, endpoint, extent, or result. It may be temporal (“until”) or consequential (“to the point that”). Context decides which reading is active.

Hujan turun tanpa henti sehingga beberapa kampung ditenggelami air.

Rain fell without stopping to the point that several villages were flooded.

Pasukan penyelamat bekerja sehingga awal pagi.

The rescue team worked until early morning.

The first complement is a clause describing a consequence. The second is a time boundary. Neither introduces the cause of the preceding event.

Sampai has similar endpoint and result uses, but it is especially frequent in conversation (informal/neutral spoken). In formal analytical prose, sehingga is usually the safer choice.

Dia terlalu letih sampai tertidur di dalam kereta.

He was so tired that he fell asleep in the car. (informal)

Orang ramai beratur sampai ke luar bangunan.

People queued all the way outside the building. (informal)

The second sampai marks a spatial endpoint rather than a clause-level result. This shared endpoint logic explains why the same word covers space, time, and consequence.

Akibatnya and oleh sebab itu: textual consequences

Akibatnya means “as a consequence/result.” The suffix -nya packages the consequence as linked to the situation already mentioned. It is strongly result-oriented and often introduces an undesirable effect, though negative meaning is not grammatically obligatory.

Syarikat itu gagal memperbaharui lesennya. Akibatnya, operasi kilang terpaksa dihentikan.

The company failed to renew its licence. As a result, factory operations had to stop.

Oleh sebab itu means “for that reason/therefore” (formal). It foregrounds the writer's inferential step and is common in reports, speeches, and academic argument. Oleh itu is a shorter formal alternative.

Kos penyelenggaraan terus meningkat. Oleh sebab itu, jawatankuasa mencadangkan penggantian sistem tersebut.

Maintenance costs continue to rise. Therefore, the committee recommends replacing the system.

Data yang dikumpulkan masih belum lengkap. Oleh itu, analisis tersebut perlu diulang.

The data collected are still incomplete. Therefore, the analysis needs to be repeated.

Both forms introduce an inference from the preceding discourse. Oleh sebab itu makes the causal basis explicit through sebab “reason,” while concise oleh itu often keeps the argument moving when that basis is already obvious.

The form oleh kerana itu is widespread, but it is not the prescribed form in edited Standard Malaysian Malay. In the standard analysis, the preposition oleh is followed by the noun sebab, whereas kerana is a conjunction. Use oleh sebab itu or oleh itu in careful prose; recognize oleh kerana itu when you encounter it, but do not model formal writing on it.

The recommendation is a conclusion or response drawn from the first proposition. Unlike sehingga, oleh sebab itu does not embed the second clause as the natural endpoint of the first. It operates between discourse units.

💡
Use sehingga inside a cause-to-result chain; use akibatnya or oleh sebab itu when a new sentence states the consequence or conclusion you draw from the preceding discourse.

Accidental result versus intended outcome

A result is what a situation actually leads to. A purpose is what an agent intends. English so that can express either, but Malay normally keeps them apart.

Dia memperlahankan kereta supaya pejalan kaki dapat melintas.

She slowed the car so that the pedestrians could cross. (intended purpose)

Dia memperlahankan kereta sehingga kenderaan di belakangnya terpaksa berhenti.

She slowed the car to the point that the vehicles behind her had to stop. (actual result)

Supaya presents the crossing as the goal; sehingga presents the stopping as an outcome, whether intended or not. Intentional constructions are developed on purpose and intended result.

Building a full chain

A well-structured paragraph can distinguish source, consequence, and response instead of repeating one vague connector:

Oleh sebab hujan lebat berterusan, paras sungai meningkat sehingga melepasi tahap bahaya. Akibatnya, beberapa jalan ditutup. Oleh sebab itu, penduduk dinasihati supaya menggunakan laluan alternatif.

Because heavy rain continued, the river level rose beyond the danger level. As a result, several roads were closed. Therefore, residents were advised to use alternative routes.

Oleh sebab gives the causal source, sehingga gives the reached threshold, akibatnya states the practical consequence, and oleh sebab itu introduces an official recommendation based on that situation. The sequence sounds precise because each link performs a different job.

Common Mistakes

1. Using sehingga to introduce a reason

❌ Jalan ditutup sehingga sungai melimpah.

Incorrect for 'because' — this says the closure continued until the river overflowed, or creates an unclear result relation.

✅ Jalan ditutup kerana sungai melimpah.

The road was closed because the river overflowed.

2. Copying Indonesian karena into Malaysian standard spelling

❌ Kami lewat karena kesesakan lalu lintas.

Non-Malaysian standard spelling — karena is Indonesian.

✅ Kami lewat kerana kesesakan lalu lintas.

We were late because of traffic congestion.

3. Stacking mismatched nominal cause markers

❌ Penerbangan dibatalkan kerana akibat ribut.

Redundant and logically muddy — kerana and akibat package the relation differently.

✅ Penerbangan dibatalkan kerana ribut.

The flight was cancelled because of the storm.

4. Using a result marker for an intended purpose

❌ Saya bercakap perlahan sehingga bayi itu tidak terjaga.

This presents the baby's not waking as an achieved result, not clearly as the speaker's intention.

✅ Saya bercakap perlahan supaya bayi itu tidak terjaga.

I spoke softly so that the baby would not wake up.

5. Treating oleh kerana itu as prescribed formal usage

❌ Kos meningkat. Oleh kerana itu, harga perlu disemak semula.

Nonstandard in prescriptive Malaysian Malay — oleh should be followed by nominal sebab, not conjunctional kerana.

✅ Kos meningkat. Oleh sebab itu, harga perlu disemak semula.

Costs have risen. Therefore, the price needs to be reviewed.

Key Takeaways

  • Kerana and conversational sebab look back to the causal source.
  • Sehingga and conversational sampai point forward to an endpoint or actual result.
  • Akibatnya states a consequence; oleh sebab itu and concise oleh itu make a formal textual inference.
  • A noun after a connector still needs logical analysis: cause, result, and “the reason” are different structures.
  • Use supaya or agar for intended purpose, not sehingga unless an actual outcome is meant.
