Giving Examples and Elaboration in Malaysian Malay

Examples can perform several different discourse jobs. Misalnya and contohnya introduce an illustration of a general statement. Seperti marks resemblance or introduces examples as a phrase. Antara lain explicitly presents a nonexhaustive selection, while termasuk identifies something as a member of a larger category.

English often uses for example across all these relations. Malay makes it useful to ask whether the writer is illustrating a claim, comparing one thing with another, selecting a few items from a longer set, or asserting membership. The answer determines both marker and punctuation.

misalnya introduces an illustration

Misalnya means “for instance/for example.” It can begin a new sentence that illustrates a preceding generalization or appear parenthetically inside a sentence. At sentence start, it is normally followed by a comma.

Beberapa perubahan kecil dapat mengurangkan penggunaan tenaga di rumah. Misalnya, penghuni boleh mematikan pendingin hawa apabila bilik tidak digunakan.

Several small changes can reduce household energy use. For instance, residents can turn off the air conditioner when the room is not in use.

Pengguna, misalnya, boleh memilih untuk menerima bil dalam bentuk digital sahaja.

Users, for example, can choose to receive bills only in digital form. (formal)

The first example is a complete proposition supporting the generalization. The second uses misalnya as a parenthetical signal that users are one illustrative group. Paired commas reflect that interruption.

Misalnya is common in careful and (academic) prose. It does not mean that the illustration is the only possible one; the surrounding generalization remains broader.

contohnya packages “an example of that”

Contohnya also means “for example.” Morphologically and conceptually, it points back to “its example,” so it is natural when the writer has just named a category or pattern and now supplies a representative case.

Sesetengah urusan kerajaan boleh diselesaikan sepenuhnya dalam talian. Contohnya, pengguna boleh memperbaharui lesen tertentu tanpa hadir di kaunter.

Some government transactions can be completed entirely online. For example, users can renew certain licenses without going to a counter.

Kami perlu mengurangkan perbelanjaan yang tidak mendesak, contohnya kos hiasan untuk acara dalaman.

We need to reduce nonurgent expenditure, for example decoration costs for internal events.

In many contexts misalnya and contohnya are interchangeable. Contohnya often feels direct and concrete; misalnya can sound slightly more expository. This is a tendency, not a strict register boundary.

Do not pile them together as contohnya misalnya. One illustration marker is enough unless a writer is explicitly discussing the word example itself.

💡
Use sentence-initial Misalnya, or Contohnya, before a complete illustrative statement. The comma tells the reader that the marker organizes the sentence rather than serving as one of its participants.

seperti introduces resemblance or phrase-level examples

Seperti basically means “like/as.” It can compare resemblance and can introduce a noun phrase containing one or more examples of a preceding category.

Permukaan meja itu terasa kasar seperti kulit pokok.

The table surface feels rough like tree bark.

Dokumen sokongan seperti penyata bank dan slip gaji perlu dimuat naik bersama borang.

Supporting documents such as bank statements and payslips must be uploaded with the form. (formal)

In the first, tree bark is a comparison standard. In the second, bank statements and payslips instantiate the category dokumen sokongan. The material after seperti is a phrase, not an independent sentence.

This is where English transfer often causes trouble. English can write such as, the applicant must provide... after a colon-like pause, but bare seperti expects something it can relate to. To introduce a full example sentence, use misalnya, contohnya, or a structure such as seperti yang berikut “as follows.”

Perubahan itu dapat dilihat seperti yang berikut: masa menunggu berkurang, aduan menurun dan kadar penyelesaian meningkat.

The change can be seen as follows: waiting times decreased, complaints fell, and completion rates rose. (formal)

The colon is licensed because seperti yang berikut announces an elaborating list. A bare seperti before the full clause would leave the comparison structure incomplete.

antara lain marks a deliberately incomplete list

Antara lain means “among other things/among others.” It tells the reader that named items are selected from a larger set and that the list is intentionally nonexhaustive. The two words remain separate.

Kemudahan di pusat komuniti itu merangkumi, antara lain, bilik bacaan, dapur dan ruang serbaguna.

Facilities at the community center include, among other things, a reading room, a kitchen, and a multipurpose space.

Panel tersebut dianggotai oleh pakar kesihatan awam, ahli ekonomi dan wakil pertubuhan belia, antara lain.

The panel includes public-health experts, economists, and representatives of youth organizations, among others. (formal)

The parenthetical marker is set off by commas when it interrupts the clause. At the end, a preceding comma separates it from the listed members. Do not add dan lain-lain automatically after antara lain; both signal incompleteness, so combining them is often redundant.

A colon can introduce a nonexhaustive list after a complete announcing clause:

Beberapa faktor perlu dipertimbangkan: kos, tempoh pelaksanaan dan kesan terhadap pengguna, antara lain.

Several factors need to be considered: cost, implementation time, and effects on users, among others. (formal)

The colon follows the complete announcing clause, while final antara lain confirms that the list is incomplete. A smoother compact alternative is Beberapa faktor perlu dipertimbangkan, antaranya kos... or Faktor yang perlu dipertimbangkan termasuk kos.... The essential meaning is that the named factors do not exhaust the set.

termasuk asserts category membership

Termasuk means “including/included.” It presents the following entity as a member of the set or category already under discussion.

Semua kakitangan, termasuk pekerja sambilan, layak memohon kemudahan tersebut.

All staff, including part-time workers, are eligible to apply for the benefit.

Yuran pendaftaran itu termasuk makan tengah hari dan bahan kursus.

The registration fee includes lunch and course materials.

The first sentence emphasizes that part-time workers belong inside semua kakitangan for this policy. Commas mark the termasuk phrase as parenthetical. The second makes lunch and course materials part of what the fee covers; no commas are needed because the included items complete the predicate.

Membership is stronger than mere resemblance. Haiwan seperti paus can introduce whales as examples in context, while haiwan termasuk paus asserts that the category includes whales. Use termasuk when inclusion itself matters—for rights, costs, coverage, or classification.

💡
Test the relation with “is a member of.” If that statement is central, use termasuk. If the item merely illustrates a wider pattern, use misalnya/contohnya or phrase-level seperti.

From generalization to example to elaboration

A clear explanatory paragraph first states the general point, then supplies a representative case, and finally explains why the case matters.

Akses pengangkutan mempengaruhi penyertaan dalam latihan. Contohnya, peserta dari kampung yang tidak mempunyai perkhidmatan bas tetap lebih kerap membatalkan kehadiran. Keadaan ini menunjukkan bahawa jadual latihan sahaja tidak mencukupi untuk menjamin akses.

Transport access affects participation in training. For example, participants from villages without regular bus services cancel their attendance more often. This situation shows that the training schedule alone is not enough to guarantee access.

The second sentence is not an unrelated anecdote. It instantiates the general claim; the third makes the inferential relevance explicit. Example markers improve cohesion only when the example genuinely supports the stated category or claim.

The phrase sebagai contoh is a transparent formal alternative to contohnya and misalnya. At sentence start it takes a comma and introduces an illustration, not a resemblance comparison.

Sebagai contoh, kadar penggunaan meningkat selepas kaunter bantuan dibuka pada waktu malam.

As an example, usage rates increased after the help counter opened in the evening. (formal)

Antaranya “among them” differs slightly from antara lain. It points back to a known plural set and then selects members from it.

Tiga daerah mencatat peningkatan yang ketara. Antaranya ialah Kuala Muda dan Kota Setar.

Three districts recorded a marked increase. Among them were Kuala Muda and Kota Setar. (formal)

Because the first sentence establishes a set of three districts, antaranya can retrieve that set. Antara lain instead signals more generally that other unmentioned items exist. Both are nonexhaustive, but their backward reference differs.

These distinctions also matter in academic signposting, where examples must support rather than merely follow a general claim.

Punctuation and capitalization

At sentence start, write Misalnya, and Contohnya, with an initial capital and following comma. Parenthetical misalnya and antara lain take commas on both sides. Seperti and complement-taking termasuk normally have no comma immediately after them. A colon belongs after a complete announcement such as Contohnya adalah seperti yang berikut: or Tiga langkah perlu diambil:, not automatically after every example marker.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting seperti before an independent example sentence

❌ Banyak urusan boleh dibuat dalam talian. Seperti, pengguna memperbaharui lesen dari rumah.

Incorrect—bare seperti does not introduce a complete illustrative sentence this way.

✅ Banyak urusan boleh dibuat dalam talian. Contohnya, pengguna boleh memperbaharui lesen dari rumah.

Many transactions can be completed online. For example, users can renew licenses from home.

2. Confusing illustration with category membership

❌ Yuran itu seperti makan tengah hari dan bahan kursus.

Incorrect for the intended coverage meaning—lunch and course materials are included, not merely similar to the fee.

✅ Yuran itu termasuk makan tengah hari dan bahan kursus.

The fee includes lunch and course materials.

3. Making a nonexhaustive marker redundant

❌ Bengkel itu membincangkan, antara lain, keselamatan, kos dan lain-lain.

Needlessly doubled—antara lain already marks the list as nonexhaustive.

✅ Bengkel itu membincangkan, antara lain, keselamatan dan kos penyelenggaraan.

The workshop discusses, among other things, safety and maintenance costs.

4. Omitting commas around a parenthetical example

❌ Pengguna misalnya boleh meminta salinan digital.

Unclear careful punctuation—parenthetical misalnya should be set off by commas.

✅ Pengguna, misalnya, boleh meminta salinan laporan dalam bentuk digital.

Users, for example, can request a digital copy of the report.

5. Treating one example as the entire category

❌ Mamalia ialah paus kerana paus diberikan sebagai contoh.

Incorrect inference—an example is one member, not the complete definition of a category.

✅ Paus ialah salah satu contoh mamalia yang hidup di laut.

The whale is one example of a mammal that lives in the sea.

Key Takeaways

Use misalnya and contohnya for illustrations, especially before complete example sentences. Use seperti for resemblance or phrase-level examples, antara lain for an explicitly nonexhaustive selection, and termasuk for membership or coverage. Commas mark sentence-level and parenthetical organizers; a colon requires an announcing structure. An example creates cohesion only when its relation to the general claim is logically clear.
