A cause in the world and a conclusion in a text are not the same relation. Kerana can identify why an event happened inside a sentence. Jadi often introduces a practical consequence in conversation. Akibatnya reports what followed from an earlier situation, while oleh sebab itu presents a formal inference, decision, or recommendation. Maka marks a consequent in formal reasoning or literary narration.
English so, therefore, and because encourage learners to move one connector everywhere. Good Malay discourse instead shows whether the writer is naming a real-world source, reporting an outcome, or drawing a reasoned conclusion from evidence.
kerana supplies a cause inside the sentence
Kerana is the neutral standard conjunction meaning “because.” It introduces the causal basis for the clause to which it belongs.
Kami menukar tempat latihan kerana bumbung dewan lama sedang dibaiki.
We changed the training venue because the old hall's roof is being repaired.
Kerana jumlah peserta melebihi jangkaan, pihak urus setia menyediakan satu bilik tambahan.
Because participant numbers exceeded expectations, the organizers provided an additional room.
When the reason follows the main clause, no comma is normally needed before a short kerana clause. When a substantial reason clause is fronted, a comma helps mark its boundary from the result clause.
Conversational Malaysian Malay often uses sebab as a conjunction (informal/neutral spoken):
Saya tak sempat makan sebab mesyuarat habis lambat.
I didn't have time to eat because the meeting ended late. (informal)
Formal prose normally favors kerana, oleh sebab, or disebabkan oleh according to structure. Malaysian standard spells the conjunction kerana, not Indonesian karena.
The page on cause, reason, and result chains explains the internal syntax. Here the focus is how a writer moves from one discourse unit to the next.
jadi gives a conversational consequence or decision
Sentence-initial jadi commonly means “so” in conversation. It can introduce what happened next, a decision prompted by the previous fact, or a conclusion the speaker draws.
‘Bas terakhir sudah bertolak.’ ‘Jadi, kita balik dengan teksi sajalah.’
‘The last bus has left.’ ‘So, let's just go home by taxi.’ (informal dialogue)
Hujan makin lebat, jadi kami batalkan rancangan untuk berkelah.
The rain was getting heavier, so we canceled our picnic plan. (neutral conversation)
The missing bus does not physically cause a taxi ride. It creates a practical reason for the speakers' decision. This is a discourse consequence: given the first fact, the second move is sensible.
Jadi is excellent in dialogue, explanations, and ordinary messages. Repeating it in every sentence of a report makes the argument sound conversational and leaves different logical relations unmarked. Formal prose can choose akibatnya for an observed outcome or oleh sebab itu for an inference or recommendation.
Do not confuse this connector with lexical jadi “become/result/be ready,” as in Air itu jadi keruh “The water became cloudy.” That lexical predicate is outside the connector system treated here.
akibatnya reports a resulting consequence
Akibatnya packages the earlier situation as the source of a consequence: “as a result.” It often introduces an adverse outcome, although negativity is a tendency rather than a grammatical requirement. At sentence start, use a following comma.
Hujan lebat berterusan selama enam jam. Akibatnya, beberapa laluan utama dinaiki air.
Heavy rain continued for six hours. As a result, several main routes were flooded. (news style)
Syarikat itu lewat memesan bahan mentah. Akibatnya, jadual pengeluaran terpaksa diubah.
The company ordered its raw materials late. As a result, the production schedule had to be changed.
In both cases, the second sentence reports an outcome in the event chain. The writer is not merely stating a personal conclusion; the flooding and schedule change actually occurred.
The noun akibat means “effect/consequence.” Akibatnya uses -nya to connect “its consequence” to the preceding discourse. This lexical packaging explains why the form naturally looks backward.
oleh sebab itu marks a formal inference or response
Oleh sebab itu means “for that reason/therefore” and is common in reports, speeches, official explanations, and academic argument. It tells the reader that the next proposition follows as the writer's conclusion, policy response, or recommendation.
Data bagi dua daerah masih belum lengkap. Oleh sebab itu, perbandingan keseluruhan perlu ditangguhkan sehingga data tersebut disahkan.
Data for two districts remain incomplete. Therefore, the overall comparison must be postponed until those data are verified. (academic)
Lif bangunan itu akan ditutup untuk penyelenggaraan. Oleh sebab itu, pengunjung dinasihati supaya menggunakan lif di blok sebelah.
The building's lift will be closed for maintenance. For that reason, visitors are advised to use the lift in the neighboring block. (formal notice)
Incomplete data do not physically cause an analyst's sentence. They justify a methodological decision. The closed lift likewise motivates advice. Oleh sebab itu exposes the inferential bridge between evidence and response.
The shorter oleh itu is a standard formal alternative when the causal basis is already obvious. Oleh kerana itu is widespread in actual Malaysian usage, but careful edited prose commonly prefers oleh sebab itu or oleh itu because oleh combines transparently with nominal sebab. Recognize the widespread variant without treating it as the safest editorial model.
maka introduces a consequent in reasoning or elevated narrative
Maka marks the result side of a condition or an inferential step. It is productive in formal logical, legal, mathematical, and (academic) prose, and it also appears in (literary) narration. It sounds elevated if used for every ordinary conversational “so.”
Jika nilai p lebih kecil daripada aras keertian yang ditetapkan, maka hipotesis nol ditolak.
If the p-value is smaller than the specified significance level, then the null hypothesis is rejected. (academic)
Apabila utusan itu tiba di balairung, maka baginda pun memerintahkan surat tersebut dibacakan.
When the envoy arrived at the audience hall, the ruler then ordered the letter to be read aloud. (literary)
In the academic example, maka identifies the consequent of an explicit condition. In the literary example, it advances a ceremonially narrated event. Everyday Saya letih, maka saya tidur is grammatical but pompous for a casual chat; jadi saya tidur or simple sequencing is more natural.
One chain across dialogue, news, and academic prose
The same broad cause–consequence architecture is recast according to genre.
In dialogue, sebab and jadi make the reasoning immediate:
‘Jalan depan ditutup sebab pokok tumbang.’ ‘Jadi, kita ikut jalan belakang.’
‘The road ahead is closed because a tree fell.’ ‘So, we'll take the back road.’ (informal dialogue)
In news reporting, akibatnya foregrounds an observed outcome:
Sebatang pokok tumbang dan menghalang laluan utama. Akibatnya, trafik dilencongkan melalui jalan belakang selama hampir dua jam.
A tree fell and blocked the main route. As a result, traffic was diverted through the back road for almost two hours. (news style)
In academic prose, evidence licenses a conclusion rather than physically producing it:
Masa perjalanan melalui laluan utama meningkat secara konsisten dalam ketiga-tiga tempoh pemerhatian. Oleh sebab itu, kajian ini mencadangkan agar aliran trafik diagihkan ke laluan alternatif pada waktu puncak.
Travel time on the main route increased consistently in all three observation periods. Therefore, this study proposes distributing traffic to alternative routes at peak times. (academic)
The connectors differ because the discourse action differs: solve a practical problem, report an outcome, or justify a recommendation.
Cause is not proof
A connector cannot repair a weak argument. If two facts merely occur together, oleh sebab itu does not establish that one caused the other. Academic writers must state the evidential limitation.
Penggunaan aplikasi meningkat pada bulan yang sama dengan peningkatan jualan. Namun, keserentakan ini sahaja tidak membuktikan bahawa aplikasi tersebut menyebabkan peningkatan jualan.
App use rose in the same month as sales increased. However, this timing alone does not prove that the app caused the increase in sales. (academic)
The second sentence blocks an unjustified causal inference. Cohesion markers reveal reasoning; they cannot substitute for evidence.
Extending a chain across several sentences
One consequence can become the basis for a later response. A well-built chain changes markers as the discourse relation changes.
Pelayan utama gagal berfungsi selama hampir empat jam. Akibatnya, pelanggan tidak dapat mengakses akaun mereka. Oleh sebab itu, pihak pengurusan memutuskan untuk menyediakan sistem sandaran di lokasi berasingan.
The main server failed for almost four hours. As a result, customers could not access their accounts. Therefore, management decided to provide a backup system at a separate location. (formal)
Akibatnya links the technical failure to the experienced service outage. Oleh sebab itu then links the entire incident to a managerial decision. Repeating either connector would blur the distinction between event outcome and reasoned response.
In a long paragraph, the antecedent of itu or -nya must remain clear. If several possible causes intervene, repeat a concise noun phrase—Oleh sebab gangguan tersebut, ...—rather than forcing the reader to guess which earlier statement supplies the reason. Explicit repetition is preferable to ambiguous cohesion.
Common Mistakes
1. Using jadi throughout formal argument
❌ Data dua bulan hilang. Jadi, analisis ini tidak lengkap. Jadi, pengumpulan data perlu diulang.
Overly conversational and repetitive for a formal argument.
✅ Data bagi dua bulan hilang. Akibatnya, analisis ini tidak lengkap. Oleh sebab itu, pengumpulan data perlu diulang.
Two months of data are missing. As a result, this analysis is incomplete. Therefore, data collection must be repeated. (formal)
2. Using kerana to introduce the result
❌ Sungai melimpah kerana beberapa jalan ditutup.
Wrong direction for the intended meaning—the road closures are the result, not the cause of the overflow.
✅ Sungai melimpah. Akibatnya, beberapa jalan di kawasan rendah ditutup.
The river overflowed. As a result, several roads in low-lying areas were closed.
3. Treating an inference as physical causation
❌ Jualan meningkat selepas iklan disiarkan. Oleh sebab itu, iklan tersebut pasti menyebabkan peningkatan jualan.
Unwarranted inference—sequence and association alone do not prove that the advertisement caused the increase.
✅ Jualan meningkat selepas iklan disiarkan, tetapi data ini sahaja belum membuktikan hubungan sebab-akibat.
Sales increased after the advertisement was aired, but these data alone do not yet prove a causal relationship.
4. Using maka for routine casual consequence
❌ Saya lapar, maka saya singgah beli nasi ayam.
Grammatically elevated but unnatural for the intended casual conversation.
✅ Saya lapar, jadi saya singgah membeli nasi ayam.
I was hungry, so I stopped to buy chicken rice. (neutral conversation)
5. Omitting the comma after a sentence connector
❌ Sistem gagal dikemas kini. Akibatnya semua tempahan perlu dimasukkan semula.
Poor careful punctuation—sentence-initial akibatnya is followed by a comma.
✅ Sistem gagal dikemas kini. Akibatnya, semua tempahan perlu dimasukkan semula.
The system failed to update. As a result, all bookings need to be entered again.
Key Takeaways
Use kerana to introduce a cause within a sentence and conversational jadi for a practical consequence or decision. Use akibatnya for an actual reported outcome, oleh sebab itu for a formal inference or response, and maka for an explicit consequent in formal reasoning or elevated narrative. The connector must match the logic: real-world causation, textual inference, and recommended action are distinct relations.
