Sequencing: pertama, kemudian, lalu, akhirnya in Malaysian Malay

Malay clauses do not need tense endings to show event order. Sequencers such as pertama, kemudian, lalu, and akhirnya impose an architecture on otherwise uninflected clauses: an opening step, a later step, a closely advancing event, and a culminating result. Choosing among them is therefore about the relationship between events, not translating every English then with one word.

For suspense, scene shifts, and revelation rather than neutral ordering, continue to narrative connectors and event pacing.

Pertama opens an ordered series

Pertama “first” identifies the opening item in an explicit sequence. At the beginning of a sentence or instruction step, it is normally followed by a comma.

Pertama, semak tarikh luput pada setiap dokumen.

First, check the expiry date on every document.

Pertama sekali, saya akan menerangkan tujuan kajian ini.

First of all, I will explain the purpose of this study.

Pertama sekali gives the opening greater rhetorical prominence. It is useful at the start of a presentation but excessive before every simple two-step instruction. A numbered outline can instead use Pertama, Kedua, and Ketiga.

Pertama, kita meneliti masalah semasa. Kedua, kita membandingkan tiga pilihan. Ketiga, kita memilih tindakan susulan.

First, we examine the current problem. Second, we compare three options. Third, we choose the follow-up action.

💡
Use ordinal sequencers when the number and position of the steps matter. If the text merely moves forward in time, kemudian or selepas itu is usually more natural.

Kemudian gives a later step

Kemudian means “then/afterward.” It places one event after another without necessarily implying that the second followed instantly or resulted from the first.

Isi borang ini, kemudian serahkan kepada pegawai di kaunter tiga.

Fill in this form, then hand it to the officer at counter three.

Kami berhenti untuk makan tengah hari di Tapah, kemudian meneruskan perjalanan ke utara.

We stopped for lunch in Tapah, then continued our journey north.

The first sentence has a procedural order; the second moves a travel account forward. A comma before kemudian helps separate substantial coordinated actions. At sentence start, write Kemudian, with a capital and comma when it organizes the next complete sentence.

Kami bermalam di Alor Setar. Kemudian, kami bertolak ke Kuala Perlis pada awal pagi.

We spent the night in Alor Setar. Then, we left for Kuala Perlis early in the morning.

Lalu advances the event line closely

Lalu often links an action to the next event in a compact narrative or procedural chain. The second event feels like the immediate next move and may follow naturally from the first.

Dia membuka sampul itu lalu membaca surat di dalamnya.

She opened the envelope and then read the letter inside.

Pengawal terdengar bunyi kaca pecah lalu berlari ke pintu belakang.

The guard heard glass breaking and immediately ran to the back door.

Unlike broad kemudian, lalu keeps the actions tightly integrated. It often occurs between predicates within one sentence and normally needs no comma in a short sequence. It can also begin a new narrative move as Lalu, ..., but repeated sentence-initial lalu quickly becomes monotonous.

English learners sometimes translate every then as lalu. That creates false immediacy in a schedule spanning hours or days. Use kemudian, selepas itu, or an explicit time phrase when the gap matters.

Akhirnya marks culmination, not impatience by itself

Akhirnya means “finally/in the end.” It presents an event as the endpoint of preceding stages, effort, delay, or uncertainty.

Selepas tiga kali mencuba, akhirnya kami berjaya membuka fail itu.

After three attempts, we finally managed to open the file.

Perbincangan berlangsung hampir dua jam. Akhirnya, semua pihak bersetuju dengan cadangan kedua.

The discussion lasted nearly two hours. In the end, all parties agreed to the second proposal.

English finally! can express impatience as an emotional reaction. Malay akhirnya supplies culmination; irritation comes from context, intonation, or words such as baru and an exclamation. Do not assume the connector itself is rude.

Akhirnya bas itu tiba juga selepas kami menunggu selama sejam!

The bus finally arrived after we had waited for an hour! (impatience supplied by context and exclamation)

A controlled recipe sequence

Pertama, basuh beras sehingga airnya agak jernih. Kemudian, masukkan beras dan air ke dalam periuk. Selepas itu, hidupkan periuk nasi. Akhirnya, biarkan nasi berehat selama sepuluh minit sebelum dihidangkan.

First, rinse the rice until the water is fairly clear. Then put the rice and water into the pot. After that, switch on the rice cooker. Finally, let the rice rest for ten minutes before serving.

Pertama opens the procedure, kemudian adds the next step, selepas itu explicitly resumes the completed preceding step, and akhirnya introduces the final stage. Lalu would be possible between two tightly integrated actions, but using it for every sentence would make the measured waiting stages feel unnaturally immediate.

A travel story

Kami tiba di Kuala Terengganu sebelum tengah hari. Kemudian, kami makan nasi dagang berhampiran pasar. Selepas itu, hujan mula turun dengan lebat, lalu kami berteduh di sebuah kedai buku. Akhirnya, kami dapat berjalan ke hotel apabila hujan reda.

We arrived in Kuala Terengganu before noon. Then we ate nasi dagang near the market. After that, heavy rain began, so we took shelter in a bookshop. Finally, we were able to walk to the hotel when the rain eased.

No Malay verb changes to a past form. The arrival establishes the story time; the sequencers and causal fit order the later events. Lalu tightly connects the sudden rain to seeking shelter, while akhirnya closes the obstacle-and-resolution arc.

A presentation outline

Pertama, saya akan menghuraikan latar belakang projek. Kedua, saya akan membentangkan dapatan utama. Kemudian, kita akan meneliti dua cadangan pelaksanaan. Akhirnya, saya akan merumuskan tindakan yang telah dipersetujui.

First, I will describe the project's background. Second, I will present the main findings. Then we will examine two implementation proposals. Finally, I will summarize the agreed actions.

The ordinal pair signals planned sections. Kemudian moves from findings to joint discussion without assigning it another numbered rank, and akhirnya announces closure. This controlled variation reveals structure rather than merely avoiding repetition.

💡
Before choosing a marker, draw the event relation: numbered step, later event, immediate next action, or culmination. The connector should make that relation visible.

Punctuation and capitalization

Sentence-initial Pertama, Kemudian, Selepas itu, and Akhirnya, normally take a following comma in careful prose. Between two short predicates, lalu usually needs no comma: bangun lalu keluar. A semicolon can separate long balanced stages, but a full stop is often clearer.

Multiword selepas itu remains two words. Colloquial lepas tu is common (informal) in speech and messaging but should be expanded to selepas itu in formal prose.

Common Mistakes

1. Using lalu for every distant step

❌ Kami tiba pada hari Isnin. Lalu, tiga hari kemudian kami pulang.

Poor sequencing—lalu suggests a close advance despite the explicit three-day gap.

✅ Kami tiba pada hari Isnin. Tiga hari kemudian, kami pulang.

We arrived on Monday. Three days later, we returned home.

2. Treating akhirnya as impatience without context

❌ Akhirnya bermaksud penutur sentiasa marah kerana menunggu.

Incorrect interpretation—akhirnya marks culmination; emotion comes from context.

✅ Akhirnya, pasukan itu menemui penyelesaian yang sesuai.

In the end, the team found a suitable solution.

3. Omitting the comma after a sentence sequencer

❌ Pertama semak nombor rujukan pada resit.

Poor careful punctuation—sentence-initial Pertama is followed by a comma.

✅ Pertama, semak nombor rujukan pada resit.

First, check the reference number on the receipt.

4. Mixing numbered steps

❌ Pertama, buka aplikasi. Ketiga, masukkan kata laluan.

Incorrect sequence—the second numbered step is missing without explanation.

✅ Pertama, buka aplikasi. Kedua, masukkan kata laluan.

First, open the application. Second, enter the password.

5. Copying colloquial spelling into formal instructions

⚠️ Lepas tu hantar borang kepada penyelia.

Register mismatch in a formal procedure—lepas tu is colloquial.

✅ Selepas itu, hantar borang kepada penyelia.

After that, submit the form to the supervisor.

Key Takeaways

Use pertama for an opening numbered step, kemudian for loose later succession, lalu for a tightly advancing action, and akhirnya for culmination. Sequencers establish order even though Malay verbs do not inflect for past or future. Punctuation marks their discourse scope, and variety should reflect real event relations rather than stylistic decoration.
