adalah, ialah, and merupakan in Formal Identification in Malaysian Malay

Ordinary Malay identification needs no equivalent of English be: Dia doktor “She is a doctor,” Rumah itu besar “The house is big,” and Pejabatnya di Putrajaya “His office is in Putrajaya” are complete. In formal definitions, reports, speeches, and carefully structured explanations, however, writers may package an equation explicitly with ialah, adalah, or merupakan.

These words do not supply tense or agreement. Their value is mainly discourse organization and register: they signal that a potentially long subject is now being identified, classified, or related to a complement. Choosing among them depends on the type of complement, the strength of the equation, and the conventions of the genre.

The system at a glance

FormCentral useTypical complementRegister
zero copulaordinary identity, quality, or locationnoun, adjective, or place phraseall registers; dominant in speech
ialahidentification or classificationespecially a noun phraseformal and explanatory
adalahfocused equation or proposition boundaryespecially adjective, prepositional, infinitival-purpose, or extended complements; noun complements also occurformal and institutional
merupakan“constitutes / forms / is a” as a relational predicatenormally a noun phraseformal, academic, journalistic

This table describes strong tendencies, not an absolute one-to-one code. Malaysian editorial guidance traditionally pairs ialah with noun phrases and adalah with adjective or prepositional phrases. Real edited usage also places adalah before a noun phrase when a writer wants a strongly focused equation. A strict house style may revise such a sentence to ialah even though educated readers encounter both.

💡
Start from the zero-copula sentence. Add an explicit form only when the genre or information structure benefits from a clearly marked equation.

ialah: identifying and classifying a noun phrase

Ialah most cleanly links a subject to a noun phrase that names what it is. It is especially useful in definitions, answers to “what is X?”, and sentences whose subject is abstract or lengthy.

Masalahnya ialah kos.

The problem is the cost.

Pemenang pertandingan itu ialah Nur Aina.

The winner of the competition is Nur Aina.

Fotosintesis ialah proses tumbuhan menghasilkan makanan dengan menggunakan cahaya.

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants produce food using light.

In each case, the complement is nominal: kos, Nur Aina, and proses... identify or classify the subject. Ialah makes the equation visible, which is valuable in a textbook or formal announcement.

Conversation usually prefers the zero copula when the boundary is already obvious:

Masalahnya kos.

The problem is the cost. (natural in conversation)

Pemenangnya Nur Aina.

The winner is Nur Aina. (neutral spoken identification)

The zero versions are not abbreviated English. They are ordinary Malay. Adding ialah shifts the presentation toward an explicit definition or formal identification.

Do not use ialah mechanically before adjectives or locations in normal prose. Rumah itu ialah besar and Mesyuarat itu ialah di dewan clash with the form's nominal-identification preference.

adalah: framing an equation

Adalah marks an explicit relation between a subject and what follows. Traditional editorial descriptions especially associate it with adjective phrases and prepositional phrases in formal prose:

Keputusan jawatankuasa itu adalah muktamad.

The committee's decision is final. (formal)

Hadiah ini adalah untuk semua peserta.

This gift is for all participants. (formal)

Tujuan program ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemahiran digital.

The purpose of this programme is to improve digital skills. (formal)

The overt boundary becomes more useful as the subject grows longer. In the third example, adalah tells the reader that the long noun phrase tujuan program ini has ended and its purpose complement is beginning.

Modern Malaysian institutional and expository writing also uses adalah in focused nominal equations:

Tujuan utama adalah keselamatan.

The main objective is safety.

This sentence is readily understood and frequent as a compact formal equation. Under a conservative editorial rule that reserves ialah for noun-phrase complements, Tujuan utama ialah keselamatan may be preferred because keselamatan is a noun. The important point for learners is not to label one encountered form unintelligible; it is to recognize the register-sensitive preference and follow the house style of the institution for which they are writing.

In relaxed speech, a zero-copula reformulation is often more natural:

Keselamatan memang tujuan utama kita.

Safety really is our main objective. (natural spoken emphasis)

Yang utama, semua orang selamat.

The main thing is that everyone is safe. (conversation)

The word order may be adjusted because simply deleting adalah from every formal equation does not always give the best spoken sentence. Speakers often put the focused value first or use yang utama to frame it.

💡
With adalah, distinguish grammatical possibility from stylistic necessity. A sentence can accept the linker in formal prose while sounding lighter and more idiomatic without it in conversation.

merupakan: a formal relational predicate

Merupakan is a derived verb written as one word. In formal usage it means roughly “constitutes,” “forms,” “represents,” or “is a.” Unlike a nearly empty copula, it presents the complement as a category, component, role in a system, or evaluative classification.

Bahasa merupakan bahagian daripada kebudayaan.

Language constitutes part of culture.

Kekurangan tenaga mahir merupakan cabaran utama bagi industri itu.

The shortage of skilled workers constitutes a major challenge for that industry.

Keputusan tersebut merupakan langkah penting ke arah pemulihan.

That decision represents an important step towards recovery.

The English translation is is sometimes natural, but it hides the relational force of merupakan. The Malay writer is classifying something as a bahagian, cabaran, or langkah, often as part of an argument. This is why the form is common in academic articles, policy reports, news analysis, and formal presentations.

In plain speech, a noun predicate often carries the same core content:

Bahasa sebahagian daripada kebudayaan.

Language is part of culture. (less formal)

Kos memang cabaran utama kita.

Cost really is our main challenge. (natural conversation)

Merupakan is not a prestige substitute to insert wherever English has is. It is unsuitable before a simple location (Pejabat itu merupakan di Putrajaya) and usually unnatural before a bare adjective (Bilik itu merupakan kecil). Choose it when the complement provides a substantive classification or relation.

Why explicit linking appears with long subjects

Malay allows a noun phrase to contain many modifiers and relative clauses. When such a phrase serves as the subject of an equation, an explicit linker helps the reader parse the boundary on the first pass.

Salah satu perkara yang paling dibimbangkan oleh penduduk setempat ialah kenaikan kos sara hidup.

One of the matters that most worries local residents is the rise in the cost of living.

Objektif utama pelan pembangunan lima tahun ini adalah untuk memperluas akses kepada pengangkutan awam.

The main objective of this five-year development plan is to expand access to public transport.

Kegagalan menyelenggara sistem saliran secara berkala merupakan punca utama banjir kilat di kawasan itu.

Failure to maintain the drainage system regularly constitutes the main cause of flash floods in that area.

Without a linker, a reader might initially keep treating the following noun as another modifier within the subject. Ialah, adalah, and merupakan announce, “the equation turns here.” This is discourse packaging: the forms improve processing and emphasize the classification. None carries present tense, and none changes form if the subject is plural or if the report concerns the past.

No tense or agreement

The form remains unchanged with singular or plural subjects. Time comes from temporal expressions or the surrounding text:

Pada masa itu, masalah utama ialah kekurangan bekalan air.

At that time, the main problem was the shortage of water supply.

Dua faktor utama ialah kos dan tempoh pelaksanaan.

The two main factors are cost and the implementation period.

English alternates was/are; Malay ialah does not. Similarly, merupakan is not conjugated for person or tense. An explicit Malay linker cannot be justified merely because the English translation contains is, was, or are.

Boundaries with menjadi and sebagai

Menjadi describes becoming, changing into, or coming to occupy a status. Sebagai marks the capacity or role in which someone acts. Neither is interchangeable with a static formal equation.

Beliau menjadi ketua jabatan pada tahun lalu.

She became head of department last year.

Beliau bercakap sebagai wakil penduduk.

She spoke as the residents' representative.

Beliau ialah ketua jabatan yang baharu.

She is the new head of department. (formal identification)

The first sentence reports a change of status, the second a role during an action, and the third identifies the person. See jadi and menjadi and sebagai for role and capacity for those neighboring systems.

Register choices in real writing

In everyday conversation, zero copula is the norm: Dia jurutera, Bilik itu panas, Pejabat mereka dekat stesen. Ialah may appear in an explanation or announcement; adalah sounds especially institutional when it is not supported by a long or focused structure. Merupakan is normal in formal analytical prose but conspicuous if repeated in every sentence.

Good edited prose also varies its structures. A paragraph in which every sentence uses merupakan becomes heavy, while a paragraph in which every English be becomes adalah sounds translated. Use an explicit form when it guides the reader through a definition or consequential classification; otherwise trust Malay's zero-copula grammar.

Common Mistakes

1. Inserting adalah before every predicate

❌ Rumah saya adalah kecil dan adalah dekat stesen.

Incorrect as an ordinary description — both linkers are unnecessary and translated from English.

✅ Rumah saya kecil dan dekat stesen.

My house is small and near the station.

2. Using ialah before an ordinary adjective

❌ Makanan ini ialah sedap.

Incorrect in an ordinary adjectival sentence — ialah normally introduces nominal identification.

✅ Makanan ini sedap.

This food is delicious.

3. Combining two linkers

❌ Kajian ini adalah merupakan sumbangan penting kepada bidang tersebut.

Incorrect and redundant — adalah and merupakan do not stack.

✅ Kajian ini merupakan sumbangan penting kepada bidang tersebut.

This study constitutes an important contribution to the field.

4. Using merupakan before a location

❌ Ibu pejabat syarikat itu merupakan di Shah Alam.

Incorrect — merupakan does not introduce a simple locative predicate.

✅ Ibu pejabat syarikat itu di Shah Alam.

The company's headquarters is in Shah Alam.

5. Splitting ialah into two words

❌ Masalahnya ia lah kos pelaksanaan.

Incorrect spelling — the formal identifying word ialah is written as one word.

✅ Masalahnya ialah kos pelaksanaan.

The problem is the implementation cost.

Key Takeaways

  • Zero copula remains the default for ordinary nominal, adjectival, and locative predicates.
  • Ialah most clearly introduces a noun phrase that identifies or classifies the subject.
  • Adalah packages a focused formal equation, especially with adjectival, prepositional, purpose, or extended complements; nominal complements also occur, subject to house style.
  • Merupakan is a formal relational predicate meaning “constitutes,” “forms,” or “represents,” normally followed by a noun phrase.
  • None of these forms marks tense or agrees with its subject.
  • Never write adalah merupakan, and never insert an overt linker solely because English uses be.
