The relator sebagai assigns a role or interpretive capacity. In Mira bekerja sebagai guru, Mira performs the role of a teacher; in Kami menggunakan kotak itu sebagai meja, a box is made to function as a table. This is more specific than simply saying that one noun phrase identifies another.
Abang saya bekerja sebagai guru di sebuah sekolah rendah di Perak.
My elder brother works as a teacher at a primary school in Perak.
Sebagai is neutral Standard Malaysian Malay and occurs in conversation, professional writing, and formal classification. It is written separately from its complement. English as has many unrelated meanings, so it cannot be translated automatically with sebagai.
Profession and social role
After verbs such as bekerja, berkhidmat, bertugas, and dilantik, a sebagai phrase names the profession, office, or capacity in which the participant acts.
Nurul bertugas sebagai jurubahasa semasa persidangan itu.
Nurul served as an interpreter during the conference.
Beliau pernah berkhidmat sebagai pegawai perubatan di Sabah selama lima tahun.
He previously served as a medical officer in Sabah for five years. (formal)
Ahli jawatankuasa itu melantik Puan Salmah sebagai pengerusi sementara.
The committee members appointed Puan Salmah as interim chairperson. (formal)
The participant remains the same person while the sebagai phrase selects one socially recognized role. A person can be a parent, engineer, volunteer, and customer; the sentence tells the listener which capacity matters for the current event.
This explains the difference between Dia guru and Dia bekerja sebagai guru. Dia guru is a bare identity or classification clause: “She is a teacher.” Dia bekerja sebagai guru profiles the role under which she works. Malay normally uses no equivalent of English is in the first sentence. Full zero-copula syntax is covered on nouns as predicates.
Function: using one entity as another
Sebagai can assign a practical function to an object even when that object does not belong permanently to the named category.
Kami menggunakan kotak kayu itu sebagai meja sementara menunggu perabot sampai.
We used the wooden box as a table while waiting for the furniture to arrive.
Dia melipat jaketnya lalu menggunakannya sebagai bantal di dalam bas.
She folded her jacket and used it as a pillow on the bus.
Pihak penyelamat menjadikan dewan orang ramai itu sebagai pusat pemindahan sementara.
The rescue authorities made the community hall a temporary evacuation centre. (formal)
The box does not become a table by manufacture, and the jacket is not reclassified forever as a pillow. Sebagai invites the listener to interpret the object under a function for this particular event. Words such as sementara make the temporary capacity explicit, but temporary interpretation can already follow from context.
With menjadikan X sebagai Y, careful usage varies: menjadikan dewan itu pusat pemindahan is also possible because menjadikan itself assigns the resulting function. The version with sebagai overtly highlights capacity and is common in Malaysian institutional prose. This page does not treat the change-of-state verb menjadi, which has its own argument structure.
Membership, part, and classification
Sebagai also classifies an entity as a member, part, example, basis, or type relevant to the argument. The point is not necessarily employment; it is the interpretive category under which the writer asks the reader to understand something.
Sebagai bahagian daripada pasukan, setiap ahli perlu berkongsi maklumat penting.
As part of the team, every member needs to share important information.
Kerajaan negeri mengiktiraf kawasan itu sebagai tapak warisan.
The state government recognizes the area as a heritage site. (formal)
Laporan tersebut menggunakan tahun 2019 sebagai tahun asas bagi perbandingan.
The report uses 2019 as the base year for comparison. (academic)
In mengiktiraf kawasan itu sebagai tapak warisan, the area is assigned an official classification. In menggunakan tahun 2019 sebagai tahun asas, the year is selected to perform a methodological role. The complement follows ordinary Malay noun-phrase order: pengerusi sementara, tapak warisan, tahun asas. Do not copy English modifier order.
A common discourse phrase is sebagai contoh “as an example” (neutral/formal). It labels the following material as an illustration rather than asserting identity.
Sebagai contoh, pengguna boleh menetapkan had perbelanjaan harian melalui aplikasi itu.
For example, users can set a daily spending limit through the application. (formal)
Related formal phrases include sebagai bukti “as evidence,” sebagai langkah awal “as an initial step,” and sebagai tindak balas “in response” (formal). Their meanings remain compositional: the phrase assigns a discourse or argumentative role.
Phrase position and what it modifies
A sebagai phrase normally appears near the participant or event whose role it defines. After a verb, it often follows that verb's object: melantik Salmah sebagai pengerusi. At the beginning of a clause, it frames the subject's capacity.
Sebagai penyelaras projek, saya perlu memastikan semua ahli menerima jadual terkini.
As the project coordinator, I need to ensure that all members receive the latest schedule.
The understood subject of fronted sebagai penyelaras projek is saya. If the following clause changes subject, the result may become a dangling-role error, just as English as project coordinator can dangle.
Sebagai wakil penduduk, Encik Ravi akan membentangkan cadangan itu kepada majlis perbandaran.
As the residents' representative, Mr Ravi will present the proposal to the municipal council. (formal)
Long sentences should name the role bearer immediately. This keeps sebagai wakil penduduk from being misread as describing the proposal or the council.
sebagai is not a routine copula
English be plus as tempts learners to insert adalah between a lexical verb and its role complement. Dia bekerja adalah sebagai guru is not the Standard Malay construction: bekerja takes the sebagai phrase directly. In a simple identity clause, Malay needs neither word.
Dia guru, tetapi pada hujung minggu dia bekerja sebagai jurulatih bola sepak.
She is a teacher, but at weekends she works as a football coach.
The first half classifies her directly; the second selects a separate work role. In formal definitions, ialah may link noun phrases: Tugas utamanya ialah penyelarasan sukarelawan “Her main duty is volunteer coordination” (formal). A formal noun-plus-prepositional-phrase predicate can license adalah, as in Kehadiran mereka adalah sebagai pemerhati “Their presence is in the capacity of observers.” That narrower pattern does not license inserting adalah into bekerja sebagai guru merely to imitate English works as a teacher.
Not every English as means sebagai
English uses as for time, reason, comparison, manner, and role. Malay divides these meanings.
| English meaning | Malay choice | Example |
|---|---|---|
| role/capacity | sebagai | bekerja sebagai guru |
| while/when | semasa / ketika | ketika saya belajar |
| because | kerana | kerana hujan lebat |
| in the same way as | seperti | seperti yang dijanjikan |
Seperti yang dijanjikan, juruteknik itu datang sebelum tengah hari.
As promised, the technician came before noon.
Here as means “in the way that,” so seperti, not sebagai, is required. It expresses resemblance to a described manner, not assignment to a role.
There is also a useful contrast between sebagai and menjadi. Sebagai presents the capacity under which something participates; menjadi predicates a resulting state or transition. The two may appear in the same discussion without being interchangeable.
Selepas dilantik, Farid menjadi ketua unit dan mula bertugas sebagai wakil jabatan dalam mesyuarat itu.
After being appointed, Farid became the unit head and began serving as the department's representative in that meeting. (formal)
Menjadi ketua unit presents the resulting status. Sebagai wakil jabatan selects the particular capacity relevant to the meeting. The distinction is conceptual rather than a ban on either construction; see the jadi and menjadi verb family for change-of-state patterns.
Orthography and names
Write sebagai guru, sebagai pengerusi, and sebagai bahagian as separate words. Ordinary role nouns are lowercase. Capitalize an official institution or proper title only where Standard Malaysian Rumi independently requires it: sebagai wakil Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, but sebagai menteri when the word is generic.
Common Mistakes
1. Inserting adalah inside a role construction
❌ Lina bekerja adalah sebagai jururawat di klinik itu.
Incorrect—the role phrase follows bekerja directly, without adalah.
✅ Lina bekerja sebagai jururawat di klinik itu.
Lina works as a nurse at that clinic.
2. Translating temporal as with sebagai
❌ Sebagai saya sedang memasak, telefon itu berdering.
Incorrect—this as means ‘while,’ not ‘in the role of.’
✅ Semasa saya sedang memasak, telefon itu berdering.
While I was cooking, the phone rang.
3. Creating a dangling role phrase
❌ Sebagai pengurus baharu, jadual kerja itu perlu saya ubah.
Structurally misleading—the following subject is jadual kerja, which cannot be the new manager.
✅ Sebagai pengurus baharu, saya perlu mengubah jadual kerja itu.
As the new manager, I need to change the work schedule.
4. Copying English noun order
❌ Mereka melantik Puan Salmah sebagai sementara pengerusi.
Incorrect noun-phrase order—the adjective follows the role noun.
✅ Mereka melantik Puan Salmah sebagai pengerusi sementara.
They appointed Puan Salmah as interim chairperson.
Key Takeaways
Use sebagai to assign a profession, practical function, temporary capacity, membership, or classification. A bare clause such as Dia guru states identity without sebagai; Dia bekerja sebagai guru selects the role relevant to working. For English as meaning “while,” “because,” or “in the same way,” choose the Malay connector that expresses that relation instead.
