The jadi family links emergence, change of state, causation, and consequence. Bare jadi means “become/turn out” and also organizes conversation as “so”; menjadi is the careful actor-voice form for becoming or serving as; menjadikan causes something to become something else; terjadi means occur/happen; and kejadian names an event or incident. These are related meanings, not tense variants.
This page focuses on how members of this lexical family are selected. The meN- formation guide, ter- formation guide, and other Word Formation pages handle the general affix rules.

The required jadi guru presents a resulting role. Tidak jadi is a highly useful lexical pattern meaning that an intended event is cancelled or does not materialize: Saya tidak jadi pergi “I didn't end up going.”
Bare jadi is not an infinitive. It is a lexical form with its own register and constructions.
Menjadi in careful descriptions
Menjadi presents entry into a role or resulting state and is especially common in careful and formal prose.

The complement identifies the role or state reached. English often uses be rather than become in the third example, but Malay menjadi keutamaan focuses its status as the guiding priority. Select the family form from the Malay construction, not the nearest English verb.
Menjadikan causes a new role or state
Menjadikan is transitive. It takes an entity and a resulting role/state: make or turn X into Y.

The municipal council turned the old house into a community museum.

The required frame menjadikan rumah muzium appears naturally as menjadikan rumah itu sebuah muzium. The first object is what changes; the second complement is the result. Sebagai often appears with a selected function or status, especially in formal institutional prose.
Passive dijadikan centers the changed entity:
Bangunan bekas pejabat itu dijadikan pusat latihan belia.
The former office building was turned into a youth training centre.
Keep passive di- attached. Locative di bandar remains separate: Bangunan di bandar itu dijadikan muzium.
Terjadi and Malaysian berlaku
Terjadi means “occur/happen” and is established in Malay, though Malaysian prose often prefers berlaku for events and incidents.
Kami masih belum mengetahui bagaimana hal itu terjadi.
We still do not know how that happened.
Perubahan itu terjadi secara beransur-ansur, bukan dalam satu malam.
That change occurred gradually, not overnight. (formal)
Kemalangan itu berlaku berhampiran persimpangan utama.
The accident occurred near the main junction.
The required hal itu terjadi is grammatical: Tiada siapa menyangka hal itu akan terjadi. In routine Malaysian news and official reporting, kejadian berlaku is often the more idiomatic collocation. Do not import frequency preferences from neighboring Indonesian, where terjadi is especially common.
Kejadian names an event or incident
Kejadian is a lexicalized noun for an event, occurrence, or incident, often one that is noteworthy or adverse.

This discourse jadi grew from the result meaning but does not take an object like a transitive verb. Repeating it at every sentence boundary sounds unplanned. The spoken planning-marker guide treats its turn-management role.

Incorrect—jadi takes no English past ending.

Incorrect spacing—the passive verb dijadikan is one word.

4. Using terjadi for every organized event
❌ Kejohanan itu terjadi di stadium pada hari Sabtu.
Wrong lexical choice—an organized tournament is held, not an incident that happens.
✅ Kejohanan itu diadakan di stadium pada hari Sabtu.
