buat and membuat: Verb Family and Usage

Malay buat covers much of English make and do, but it does not preserve the English lexical split. Register and argument structure distinguish bare buat, actor-voice membuat, and causative or benefactive membuatkan. The nouns perbuatan, buatan, pembuatan, and pembuat are related but lexicalized enough that the nearest English translation cannot choose among them.

Bare buat in commands and object voice

Bare buat is standard in commands and after a first- or second-person actor in object voice.

Buat salinan dokumen ini sebelum menghantar borang asal.

Make a copy of this document before submitting the original form.

Kerja ini saya buat sendiri tanpa bantuan kontraktor.

I did this work myself without a contractor's help.

Keputusan yang awak buat semalam masih boleh diubah.

The decision you made yesterday can still be changed.

The required expression buat kerja is also very common in actor-first conversation:

Saya tengah buat kerja, nanti saya telefon balik.

I'm working right now; I'll call back later. (informal)

In careful prose, use Saya sedang membuat kerja..., Saya sedang bekerja..., or name the task more specifically. Bare actor-first saya buat is not freely interchangeable with saya membuat in every register.

💡
Do not call buat an infinitive. Its bare form is licensed by commands, object voice, and colloquial actor-first usage; careful actor voice normally uses membuat.

Membuat: make, do, prepare, and produce

Membuat is the broad actor-voice verb. Its object and collocation determine the English translation.

Jawatankuasa membuat keputusan selepas meneliti semua bukti.

The committee made a decision after examining all the evidence.

Aina membuat kek coklat untuk sambutan hari lahir ibunya.

Aina made a chocolate cake for her mother's birthday.

Pasukan teknikal membuat pemeriksaan keselamatan setiap minggu.

The technical team carries out a safety inspection every week.

Membuat keputusan is the safest neutral Malaysian baseline for “make a decision.” Mengambil keputusan is also accepted in Malaysian usage and can foreground reaching or adopting a decision; it should not be condemned as automatically Indonesian. Learn the collocation and intended nuance rather than applying the English make/do split.

The ambil collocation guide gives the fuller Malaysian treatment of mengambil keputusan and other established combinations.

Other frequent patterns include membuat laporan “prepare/make a report,” membuat bayaran “make payment,” membuat tempahan “make a booking,” and membuat kesilapan “make a mistake.” More specific verbs can improve formal prose: menyediakan laporan, membayar, menempah, melakukan kesilapan.

Membuatkan causes a result

Membuatkan commonly takes a cause as subject and a person or situation plus result as its complement.

Berita itu membuatkan semua ahli keluarga berasa lega.

The news made all the family members feel relieved.

Kelewatan penghantaran membuatkan pelanggan semakin tidak sabar.

The delivery delay made the customer increasingly impatient.

Perubahan kecil pada reka bentuk itu membuatkan arahan lebih mudah dibaca.

The small design change made the instructions easier to read.

The result may be verbal (berasa lega) or adjectival (lebih mudah). The suffix is not merely an optional formal decoration; it packages causation.

Membuatkan can also be benefactive when someone makes or prepares something for another person:

Ibu membuatkan saya secawan teh sebelum tidur.

Mother made me a cup of tea before bed.

Compare Ibu membuat teh “Mother made tea” with Ibu membuatkan saya teh “Mother made me tea.” The added participant is the beneficiary.

💡
With membuatkan, ask whether the suffix introduces a caused result or a beneficiary. The following complements reveal which frame is active.

Perbuatan: an act or deed

Perbuatan names an action as conduct that can be judged, prohibited, praised, or blamed.

Perbuatan membuang sampah ke dalam sungai menjejaskan kesihatan penduduk.

The act of dumping rubbish into the river harms residents' health.

Dia menyesali perbuatannya dan memohon maaf kepada semua pihak.

He regretted his actions and apologized to everyone.

Menolong jiran yang kesusahan ialah perbuatan yang terpuji.

Helping a neighbour in difficulty is a commendable deed.

The noun often carries moral or legal evaluation. It is not the ordinary noun for an industrial manufacturing process; that is pembuatan.

Buatan: made product, manufacture, or origin

Buatan classifies something by who or where it was made, or distinguishes artificial manufacture from natural origin.

Peralatan perubatan itu buatan Malaysia.

That medical equipment is made in Malaysia.

Dia lebih suka perabot buatan tangan daripada perabot yang dihasilkan secara besar-besaran.

She prefers handmade furniture to mass-produced furniture.

Kolam buatan itu dibina untuk menampung air hujan.

The artificial pond was built to collect rainwater.

The required buatan is not interchangeable with perbuatan: perabot buatan tangan is a manufactured product; perbuatan tangan would mean an act of the hand in a different, unusual context.

Pembuatan and pembuat

Pembuatan names a making or manufacturing process. Pembuat names a maker and appears especially in compounds or formal descriptions.

Proses pembuatan kerepek itu masih dilakukan secara tradisional.

The process of making those crisps is still carried out traditionally.

Syarikat pembuat komponen tersebut mempunyai kilang di Pulau Pinang.

The company that makes those components has a factory in Penang.

For a film director, policymaker, or software developer, Malaysian Malay normally selects a more specific lexical noun rather than mechanically using pembuat for every English maker.

Idiomatic and colloquial patterns

ExpressionMeaningRegister

buat halcause trouble/act upinformal
buat-buat tidak tahupretend not to knowinformal/neutral
apa boleh buatwhat can be done/it cannot be helpedinformal

Buat masa ini, semua permohonan diproses secara manual.

For the time being, all applications are processed manually. (formal)

Jangan buat-buat tidak dengar apabila saya panggil.

Don't pretend not to hear when I call you. (informal)

Exact reduplication in buat-buat takes a hyphen. Actual derivatives membuatkan, perbuatan, and pembuatan are solid.

Matched informal and formal choices

Saya dah buat bayaran pagi tadi.

I made the payment this morning. (informal)

Saya telah membuat bayaran pagi tadi.

I made the payment this morning. (formal)

Dia tengah buat laporan untuk bos.

She's preparing a report for the boss. (informal)

Beliau sedang menyediakan laporan untuk pengarah.

She is preparing a report for the director. (formal)

The formal version may select membuat, but a more specific verb such as menyediakan is often stylistically stronger. Affix choice and vocabulary both mark register.

Common Mistakes

1. Mapping English make and do mechanically

❌ Saya melakukan keputusan selepas mesyuarat.

Incorrect collocation—Malay normally makes a decision with membuat/mengambil keputusan.

✅ Saya membuat keputusan itu selepas berbincang dengan pasukan.

I made that decision after discussing it with the team.

2. Using bare actor-first buat in a formal report

⚠️ Jabatan itu buat pemeriksaan keselamatan setiap bulan.

Too colloquial for the intended formal report.

✅ Jabatan itu menjalankan pemeriksaan keselamatan setiap bulan.

The department carries out a safety inspection every month. (formal)

3. Misordering the experiencer and result after membuatkan

❌ Berita itu membuatkan lega kami.

Incorrect order—the experiencer kami precedes the result predicate berasa lega.

✅ Berita itu membuatkan kami berasa lega selepas menunggu lama.

The news made us feel relieved after a long wait.

4. Confusing perbuatan and buatan

❌ Jam tangan ini perbuatan Malaysia.

Incorrect noun—perbuatan means an act or deed.

✅ Jam tangan ini buatan Malaysia.

This watch is made in Malaysia.

5. Joining separate aspect and verb words

❌ Mereka sedangmembuat persiapan untuk majlis itu.

Incorrect spelling—sedang is separate from membuat.

✅ Mereka sedang membuat persiapan untuk majlis graduasi itu.

They are making preparations for the graduation ceremony.

Key Takeaways

Bare buat is natural in commands, object voice, and labeled informal actor-first speech; membuat is the careful actor-voice baseline across many make/do collocations. Membuatkan adds a caused result or beneficiary. Perbuatan is an act or deed, buatan marks manufacture or origin, and pembuatan names a making process. Register and argument structure matter more than the English make/do distinction.
