kerja, bekerja, and mengerjakan: Verb Family and Usage in Malaysian Malay

Malay does not use one undifferentiated equivalent of English work. Kerja names work and appears as an informal verb, bekerja presents working as an activity, and mengerjakan selects a task or obligation affected by that work. The nouns pekerjaan and pekerja distinguish job/work from worker, while mempekerjakan means to employ someone. Affixes organize the participants more precisely than English vocabulary alone suggests.

General formation of ber-, meN-, and memper-kan belongs under Word Formation. Here the aim is to learn which established member of the kerja family fits a real Malaysian context.

The verbs do not conjugate for person or tense:

Bekerja is not an infinitive and mengerjakan is not a present-tense form. Their affixes select different event structures; separate words express time and aspect.

Kerja: noun and informal verb

As a noun, kerja means work, a task, or labor in a broad sense. It appears in compounds such as kerja rumah, kerja sambilan, kerja lebih masa, and tempat kerja.

Kerja pembaikan jambatan itu akan bermula selepas musim tengkujuh.

The bridge repair work will begin after the monsoon season.

Saya masih ada banyak kerja sebelum boleh pulang.

I still have a lot of work before I can go home.

Bare kerja is also a very common informal verb in Malaysian conversation. It is natural among friends and colleagues, but careful prose normally uses bekerja.

Abang awak kerja dekat mana sekarang?

Where does your older brother work now? (informal)

Saya kerja syif malam minggu ini, jadi susah nak jumpa.

I'm working the night shift this week, so it's hard to meet. (informal)

The colloquial choice is not “incorrect Malay”; its appropriateness depends on genre. An official biography, formal application, or academic paper should not silently adopt the same reduced style.

Bekerja: work as an activity

Bekerja is generally intransitive. Rather than taking a task directly, it combines with phrases that specify workplace, employer, role, field, manner, or collaborators.

Mira bekerja sebagai ahli farmasi di sebuah hospital kerajaan.

Mira works as a pharmacist at a government hospital.

Kami bekerja dengan pasukan teknikal untuk menyelesaikan gangguan itu.

We worked with the technical team to resolve the disruption.

Beliau pernah bekerja untuk sebuah pertubuhan kebajikan di Sabah.

She once worked for a charitable organization in Sabah.

The frames carry different relations: di locates the workplace, sebagai states the role, untuk identifies an employer or beneficiary, and dengan adds collaborators or tools. Do not attach a direct affected task to bekerja merely because English says work the case or work a task.

💡
Use bekerja when the clause answers “Does/where/how does someone work?” Use mengerjakan when it answers “What task does someone work on or carry out?”

Mengerjakan and dikerjakan: an affected task

Mengerjakan is active and transitive. Its direct object is a task, duty, project, or established obligation that the subject performs or works on.

Pasukan itu sedang mengerjakan tugas terakhir sebelum pelancaran sistem.

The team is working on its final task before the system launch.

Aiman mengerjakan latihan matematik di meja makan.

Aiman worked on his mathematics exercises at the dining table.

Jemaah tersebut akan mengerjakan ibadah haji pada tahun hadapan.

The pilgrims will perform the Hajj next year. (religious/formal)

The expression mengerjakan haji/umrah is lexical and culturally established; it does not imply treating worship as an ordinary office assignment. With everyday tasks, Malaysian speakers also use membuat, menyiapkan, or a more specific verb. Mengerjakan is available but not automatically the most conversational choice in every sentence.

Passive dikerjakan foregrounds the task or project:

Lukisan dinding itu dikerjakan oleh tiga orang seniman tempatan.

The mural was worked on by three local artists.

Sebahagian kerja boleh dikerjakan dari rumah.

Some of the work can be done from home.

Write dikerjakan solid because di- is a passive prefix. Separate locative di remains separate in dikerjakan di rumah.

Pekerjaan and pekerja

Pekerjaan denotes a job, occupation, or defined body of work. Pekerjaan rumah can mean homework or work done at home, though kerja rumah is the more familiar everyday Malaysian expression for school homework; context and institutional wording vary.

Selepas tamat latihan, dia mendapat pekerjaan tetap di Seremban.

After completing the training, she got a permanent job in Seremban.

Guru meminta murid menyiapkan pekerjaan rumah sebelum hari Isnin.

The teacher asked the pupils to complete their homework before Monday.

Pekerja names the person doing work. Compounds classify that person: pekerja kilang, pekerja sambilan, pekerja mahir, pekerja asing. In employment law and public administration, pekerja is often more precise than casual English staff.

Majikan wajib menyediakan peralatan keselamatan untuk semua pekerja.

Employers must provide safety equipment for all workers. (formal)

💡
Keep the noun roles distinct: pekerjaan is the job or work, while pekerja is the person. The extra syllable is grammatically and semantically important.

Mempekerjakan: causing someone to work

Mempekerjakan is a transitive verb meaning to employ, engage, or put a person to work. The employee is its direct object; the job can be stated in an additional phrase.

Syarikat itu mempekerjakan lebih daripada seratus penduduk tempatan.

The company employs more than a hundred local residents.

Mereka mempekerjakan Lina sebagai penyelia tapak.

They employed Lina as a site supervisor.

This form is semantically causative but lexicalized around employment. Do not assume that every situation translated with English make someone work should use mempekerjakan; coercion, assignment, and ordinary employment may require different wording.

Common Mistakes

1. Giving bekerja a direct task object

❌ Dia sedang bekerja laporan bulanan.

Incorrect—bekerja does not directly select the affected task.

✅ Dia sedang mengerjakan laporan bulanan.

She is working on the monthly report.

2. Using mengerjakan for an occupation frame

❌ Azlan mengerjakan sebagai jururawat di klinik itu.

Incorrect—an occupation takes bekerja sebagai.

✅ Azlan bekerja sebagai jururawat di klinik itu.

Azlan works as a nurse at that clinic.

3. Splitting passive di-

❌ Projek itu di kerjakan secara berperingkat.

Incorrect—the passive prefix di- is attached.

✅ Projek itu dikerjakan secara berperingkat.

The project is being carried out in stages.

4. Confusing job and worker

❌ Kilang itu mencari tiga pekerjaan baharu.

Incorrect for the intended meaning—the factory is seeking workers, not jobs.

✅ Kilang itu mencari tiga pekerja baharu.

The factory is looking for three new workers.

5. Omitting -kan from employ

❌ Restoran itu mempekerja enam orang pelajar.

Incorrect—the established transitive verb is mempekerjakan.

✅ Restoran itu mempekerjakan enam orang pelajar secara sambilan.

The restaurant employs six students part-time.

Key Takeaways

Use noun kerja for work and label its bare verbal use informal. Neutral bekerja presents the activity and combines with di, sebagai, untuk, or dengan; transitive mengerjakan selects an affected task, whose passive is dikerjakan. Pekerjaan is job/work, pekerja is worker, and mempekerjakan takes the person being employed as its object.
