The label meN- represents a family of actor-voice verb prefixes, not a string that Malaysians write before a root. Its capital N says that the nasal changes its place to fit the first sound of the base: mem-, men-, meny-, meng-, menge-, or a shorter me- appears in the actual word.
This page explains formation and spelling only. The meaning page explains what the resulting verbs mean, while the usage page explains their voice, objects, and register. In ordinary Malaysian Rumi, an actual verb is always solid: membaca, never meN-baca or mem baca.
The core formation pattern
The prefix's nasal normally anticipates the place where the root begins. That assimilation makes the word easier to pronounce. With the voiceless stops p, t, and k, the nasal replaces the initial consonant; with s, the result is meny- and the s likewise disappears. Linguists show that deletion in an analysis, but standard spelling shows only the surface word.
| Base | Analysis | Surface form | What happens |
|---|---|---|---|
| baca | meN- + baca | membaca | mem-; b remains |
| tulis | meN- + tulis β men- + (t)ulis | menulis | t is deleted |
| sapu | meN- + sapu β meny- + (s)apu | menyapu | s is deleted |
| ambil | meN- + ambil | mengambil | meng- before a vowel |
| cat | meN- + cat | mengecat | menge- with a monosyllabic base |
| pilih | meN- + pilih β mem- + (p)ilih | memilih | p is deleted |
| kira | meN- + kira β meng- + (k)ira | mengira | k is deleted |
Saya membaca mesej itu dalam perjalanan ke pejabat.
I read that message on the way to the office. (neutral)
Nadia menulis alamat penghantaran pada kotak itu.
Nadia wrote the delivery address on that box. (neutral)
Pekerja sedang mengecat dinding ruang tamu.
The worker is painting the living-room wall. (neutral)
Choosing the surface prefix
Before b, the normal surface prefix is mem-: baca β membaca, bawa β membawa. Before p, productive native formations also use mem-, but the p disappears: pilih β memilih, pukul β memukul.
Abang membawa kerusi lipat dari stor.
My older brother is bringing a folding chair from the storeroom. (neutral)
Before d, c, and j, use men- and retain the consonant: dengar β mendengar, cari β mencari, jahit β menjahit. Before t, use men- but delete a productively alternating t: tulis β menulis, tarik β menarik.
Kami mencari kedai yang masih buka selepas tengah malam.
We're looking for a shop that is still open after midnight. (neutral)
Loan initials extend these same surface sets. f and v normally pattern with b/p and take mem-, as in memfailkan and memvaksin; sy and z pattern with d/c/j/t and take men-, as in mensyukuri and menziarahi; kh patterns with g/h/k and takes meng-, as in mengkhususkan. These consonants are retained. Less common initials and new technical loans can fluctuate, so their complete dictionary forms are safer than a guessed spelling.
Before s, productive attachment gives meny- plus the rest of the base: sapu β menyapu, sewa β menyewa. The spelling mensapu does not represent the standard native alternation.
Mereka menyewa sebuah rumah berhampiran kampus.
They rent a house near the campus. (neutral)
Before a vowel, g, or h, the usual form is meng- and the root begins visibly: ambil β mengambil, gali β menggali, hantar β menghantar. Before a productively alternating k, meng- remains but k is deleted: kira β mengira, karang β mengarang.
Farah menghantar resit itu melalui e-mel pagi tadi.
Farah sent the receipt by email this morning. (neutral)
With many bases beginning in l, m, n, ny, ng, r, w, or y, the prefix surfaces as me- and the initial remains: lihat β melihat, masak β memasak, nanti β menanti, nyanyi β menyanyi, rawat β merawat, wujud β mewujudkan, yakin β meyakinkan. The written forms can resemble longer allomorphs, so recover the base rather than cutting after a fixed number of letters.
Doktor itu merawat pesakit luar pada setiap hari Selasa.
That doctor treats outpatients every Tuesday. (neutral)
Why monosyllables often take menge-
Many one-syllable bases take menge-, which supplies an extra vowel: cat β mengecat, pos β mengepos, bom β mengebom. This pattern prevents an awkward consonant cluster and keeps the short base recognizable. It is a productive tendency, but loanword conventions can vary, so check an unfamiliar technical verb.
Boleh awak mengepos dokumen ini sebelum pukul lima?
Could you post this document before five o'clock? (neutral)
Do not confuse syllable count with letter count. Ambil begins with a vowel but has two syllables, so it takes mengambil, not mengeambil. Cat is one syllable in Malay and gives mengecat.
Roots, categories, and dictionary lookup
The base can already be verbal, as in baca β membaca, or the derived verb can recruit a noun: cat βpaintβ β mengecat βapply paint.β Formation does not by itself tell you the derived verb's full meaning or argument pattern. A recognizable spelling rule cannot guarantee that every noun or adjective has a conventional meN- verb.
Malaysian dictionaries generally organize a family under the base. To look up menyapu, restore sapu; for menulis, restore tulis; for mengira, restore kira. With a retained consonant, simply remove the appropriate surface prefix: membaca β baca, mengambil β ambil.
Productive deletion has lexical limits
The neat p, t, s, k deletion pattern describes productive native formation, not every word that happens to begin with those letters. Established forms and loans can preserve a consonant. Mempunyai βhaveβ preserves the p of punya as a lexicalized form. Mengkaji βstudy, investigateβ preserves k, and consonant clusters in loans commonly remain, as in memproses βprocessβ and mengkritik βcriticize.β These are standard forms, not failures to apply the rule.
Jawatankuasa itu mengkaji semula cadangan tersebut.
The committee is reviewing that proposal. (formal)
Sistem baharu memproses permohonan secara automatik.
The new system processes applications automatically. (formal)
English speakers therefore face two opposite risks: preserving t or s where native productive formation deletes it, and deleting the first member of an established loan cluster where Malaysian usage preserves it. There is no purely phonological shortcut for every borrowed or lexicalized verb; learn the dictionary form with the base.
Common Mistakes
1. Writing the abstract label as part of a real word.
β Saya meN-baca laporan itu semalam.
Incorrect β meN- is analytical notation, not Malaysian spelling.
β Saya membaca laporan itu semalam.
I read that report yesterday. (neutral)
2. Preserving a consonant that productive allomorphy deletes.
β Dia mentulis nombor telefon pada resit.
Incorrect β the initial t of tulis is deleted after productive meN-.
β Dia menulis nombor telefon pada resit.
She wrote the telephone number on the receipt. (neutral)
3. Treating s like a retained consonant.
β Pekerja itu mensapu lantai dapur.
Incorrect β sapu forms menyapu in standard Malaysian Malay.
β Pekerja itu menyapu lantai dapur.
The worker is sweeping the kitchen floor. (neutral)
4. Extending deletion into a preserved loan cluster.
β Mesin itu memroses data pelanggan.
Incorrect in standard Malaysian spelling β proses gives memproses.
β Mesin itu memproses data pelanggan.
The machine processes customer data. (formal)
Key Takeaways
- meN- is an abstract label; actual verbs use mem-, men-, meny-, meng-, menge-, or me- and are written solid.
- Productive attachment deletes root-initial p, t, s, and k while matching the nasal to the root's first sound.
- Monosyllabic bases often take menge-, as in mengecat.
- Lexicalized words and loans can preserve a consonant, so confirm unfamiliar forms in a Malaysian dictionary.
- Recover the deleted consonant for dictionary lookup, but never restore it in the surface verb.
