memper-...-kan: Valency, Lexicalization, and Register in Malaysian Malay

The surface shape memper-...-kan does not impose one argument frame. Each established family organizes its participants differently: mempertemukan A dengan B brings two parties together, memperdengarkan bahan kepada pendengar presents audible material to an audience, and mempersoalkan isu makes an issue the object of challenge.

This page treats valency, lexicalization, competition, and register. Basic segmentation belongs on the formation page, and the semantic network belongs on the meaning page. The safest unit to learn is the whole verified verb together with its normal object and any accompanying preposition.

Mempertemukan: causer, two parties, and dengan

In the expanded frame X mempertemukan A dengan B, X arranges the contact, A is the direct object, and B follows dengan. If both meeting participants form one coordinated or plural noun phrase, they can appear together as the direct object.

Penyelaras itu mempertemukan saya dengan ketua pasukan teknikal.

The coordinator introduced me to the head of the technical team. (neutral)

Persidangan tersebut mempertemukan penyelidik muda dengan pakar industri.

The conference brings young researchers together with industry experts. (formal)

Seorang pengantara akhirnya mempertemukan kedua-dua pihak.

A mediator finally brought the two parties together. (formal)

The corresponding passive foregrounds the first party or the combined group: A dipertemukan dengan B. The causer can appear in an oleh phrase but is often omitted.

Saya dipertemukan dengan bakal penyelia saya pada hari pertama.

I was introduced to my prospective supervisor on the first day. (neutral passive)

Kedua-dua wakil itu dipertemukan oleh pihak penganjur sebelum sesi bermula.

The two representatives were brought together by the organizers before the session began. (formal passive)

Do not replace dengan with kepada in the two-party frame. The relation is reciprocal contact between A and B, even though syntax chooses A as direct object.

Mempersoalkan: the issue is the object

Mempersoalkan normally takes a policy, decision, claim, motive, quality, validity, role, or other proposition-like matter as its direct object. It means question, challenge, dispute, or make an issue of that object. A person can be indirectly implicated, but the most natural object names what about that person is challenged: mempersoalkan kejujurannya, not simply using the verb as a synonym for β€œask him a question.”

Laporan audit itu mempersoalkan ketelusan proses perolehan.

The audit report questions the transparency of the procurement process. (formal)

Beberapa penyelidik mempersoalkan kesahan kesimpulan tersebut.

Several researchers question the validity of that conclusion. (academic)

Saya tidak mempersoalkan niat awak; saya cuma mahu memahami caranya.

I'm not questioning your intentions; I just want to understand the method. (neutral conversation)

In the passive, the issue becomes subject: kesahan itu dipersoalkan. This is frequent in news, legal, academic, and administrative prose (formal/academic) because the disputed matter, rather than the questioner, is topical.

Kesahihan dokumen tersebut telah dipersoalkan di mahkamah.

The authenticity of the document has been questioned in court. (formal passive)

The neighboring menyoal selects a person who is asked or interrogated: Polis menyoal saksi itu. Bertanya introduces an ordinary question. Mixing these frames changes the event.

πŸ’‘
Use mempersoalkan + ISSUE, menyoal + PERSON, and bertanya + QUESTION. English question covers all three, so English alone cannot choose the Malay verb.

Memperdengarkan: audible material before audience

With memperdengarkan, the direct object is normally what is made audible: a song, recording, speech, recitation, voice, or excerpt. An audience, if expressed, follows kepada.

X memperdengarkan MATERIAL kepada AUDIENCE

Penerbit memperdengarkan rakaman asal itu kepada para wartawan.

The producer played the original recording for the journalists. (formal)

Penyanyi itu memperdengarkan lagu baharunya buat kali pertama.

The singer performed her new song for an audience for the first time. (neutral)

Pensyarah memperdengarkan petikan ucapan tersebut kepada pelajar.

The lecturer played an excerpt from the speech for the students. (academic)

The passive retains the material as subject: rakaman itu diperdengarkan kepada juri. The audience does not normally replace the audible material as direct object.

Rakaman panggilan itu diperdengarkan kepada juri semasa perbicaraan.

The recording of the call was played to the jury during the trial. (formal passive)

In ordinary conversation, pasang lagu/rakaman itu β€œput on that song/recording” is often lighter (informal). Mainkan lagu itu is also possible in an appropriate performance or playback context. Memperdengarkan is useful in broadcast, performance, reporting, and evidentiary contexts (formal) where presentation to hearers is salient.

Pasang lagu yang tadi sekali lagi.

Put that song from earlier on again. (informal conversation)

The -i contrast: mempersenjatai

The established weapon family is mempersenjatai, not an automatically created mempersenjatakan. Its direct object is the recipient or target equipped with weapons, and the weapon can follow dengan:

X mempersenjatai TARGET dengan WEAPON

Kerajaan menafikan dakwaan bahawa pihaknya mempersenjatai kumpulan itu.

The government denied the allegation that it armed that group. (formal)

Pasukan tersebut dipersenjatai dengan senapang automatik.

The unit was armed with automatic rifles. (formal passive)

This -i frame illustrates a broader principle: a suffix is part of a verified lexical family and helps encode its participant structure. The apparent availability of -kan elsewhere does not license substitution. See the memper-...-i usage page for the extremely restricted Malaysian -i class.

Competition with simpler families

These verbs overlap with shorter forms only partially. Bertemu dengan B has the meeting participant as subject; mempertemukan A dengan B adds an external organizer. Menemui seseorang means meet, encounter, or go to see someone, whereas mempertemukan means cause parties to meet.

Saya bertemu dengan ketua jabatan selepas makan tengah hari.

I met the head of department after lunch. (neutral)

Setiausaha mempertemukan saya dengan ketua jabatan.

The secretary introduced me to the head of department. (neutral)

Mendengar rakaman presents the subject as hearer; memperdengarkan rakaman presents the subject as the person who makes it available for hearing. Menyoal saksi directs questions at a person; mempersoalkan keterangan saksi challenges the testimony. The longer form is not simply a more formal version of the shorter oneβ€”it chooses different roles.

The contrast also cuts across meN-...-kan and simple memper- families rather than forming a length-based hierarchy. Mendengarkan nasihat means listening to or heeding advice, whereas memperdengarkan rakaman kepada juri causes an audience to hear material. With a gradable adjective, a simple form such as memperbesar imej is already complete; memperbesarkan imej is not licensed merely because established memper-...-kan verbs exist. Each family therefore keeps its own base category, meaning, and participant frame.

Register and lexicalization

Mempertemukan is neutral in arranged social contact and also common in formal descriptions of conferences and mediation. Mempersoalkan is especially frequent in careful argument, news, law, and academic writing (formal/academic). Memperdengarkan belongs naturally to performance, broadcast, court, and report contexts (formal), though it can occur in neutral speech. Mempersenjatai is largely found in security, military, historical, and political discussion (formal).

Conversational paraphrases often redistribute the participants: Kenalkan saya dengan Farid β€œIntroduce me to Farid,” Kenapa pertikaikan keputusan itu? β€œWhy challenge that decision?”, or Pasang rakaman itu β€œPlay that recording.” These are real alternatives, but their lexical and syntactic details are not generated by deleting pieces from the formal verb.

Kenalkan saya dengan Farid nanti, ya.

Introduce me to Farid later, okay? (informal conversation)

Kenapa awak pertikaikan keputusan itu?

Why are you challenging that decision? (informal conversation)

πŸ’‘
Choose by event structure first and register second. A shorter conversational verb may reorganize the participants, so preserve its own frame rather than treating it as an abbreviated memper-...-kan form.

Why verified families matter

The sequence looks segmentable, but it is not freely recursive. A dictionary-listed word can also have a specialized sense: mempersoalkan is not a mechanical β€œcause to ask,” and memperdengarkan is conventionally tied to presenting audible material. Learn each verb with at least one natural frame.

Before coining a new form, check the complete derivative, definition, example, passive partner, and object pattern in a Malaysian dictionary. English transparency and attestation in another national variety do not establish prescribed Malaysian usage.

Common Mistakes

1. Giving mempertemukan only one meeting participant.

❌ Penyelaras mempertemukan saya kepada pengarah.

Incorrect frame β€” the second party follows dengan, not kepada.

βœ… Penyelaras mempertemukan saya dengan pengarah.

The coordinator introduced me to the director. (neutral)

2. Using mempersoalkan for questioning a person.

❌ Wartawan mempersoalkan jurucakap itu selepas sidang media.

Wrong verb for directing questions at a person β€” use menyoal.

βœ… Wartawan menyoal jurucakap itu selepas sidang media.

The journalists questioned the spokesperson after the press conference. (formal)

3. Making the audience the object of memperdengarkan.

❌ Pensyarah memperdengarkan pelajar rakaman itu.

Incorrect frame β€” the recording is the direct object; the audience follows kepada.

βœ… Pensyarah memperdengarkan rakaman itu kepada pelajar.

The lecturer played the recording for the students. (academic)

4. Substituting -kan in the senjata family.

❌ Mereka mempersenjatakan pasukan tersebut.

Incorrect β€” the verified Malaysian verb is mempersenjatai.

βœ… Mereka mempersenjatai pasukan tersebut.

They armed that unit. (formal)

Key Takeaways

  • Learn mempertemukan A dengan B, mempersoalkan isu, and memperdengarkan bahan kepada pendengar as distinct frames.
  • Their passives foreground the first meeting party, disputed issue, or audible material.
  • Mempersenjatai sasaran dengan senjata is an established -i contrast, not a replaceable suffix choice.
  • Shorter verbs such as bertemu, menyoal, mendengar, and pasang select different roles or registers.
  • Verify the whole lexical family; a plausible stack of affixes does not establish a Malaysian word or its valency.
