-kan: Valency, Lexicalization, and Register in Malaysian Malay

The suffix -kan is productive, but fluent use depends on the whole lexical frame. A speaker does not merely choose a root and add -kan; the established derivative determines which participant becomes the object, which complement can follow, and whether a simpler expression is preferred in conversation.

This page covers valency, lexicalization, and register. The formation page handles spelling and the kk boundary; the meaning page explains causative, benefactive, motion, and result readings. Analytical -kan takes a hyphen, while real forms such as membacakan, memasukkan, and membersihkan are solid.

Learn each derivative with its argument frame

Four core families demonstrate why a suffix-only rule is insufficient:

VerbDirect objectCommon complementUsable frame
mendudukkanperson caused to sitplace with dimendudukkan pesakit di kerusi
membacakantext read aloudaudience with kepadamembacakan surat kepada ibu
memasukkanthing caused to entergoal with ke dalammemasukkan fail ke dalam folder
membersihkanaffected surface, area, or removable materialinstrument/source phrase where neededmembersihkan meja dengan kain

Pembantu itu mendudukkan pesakit di kerusi berhampiran tingkap.

The assistant seated the patient in a chair near the window. (neutral)

Pengerusi membacakan keputusan undian kepada semua ahli.

The chair read the voting result aloud to all members. (formal)

Sila masukkan resit asal ke dalam sampul yang disediakan.

Please put the original receipt into the envelope provided. (formal instruction)

Kontraktor membersihkan longkang itu selepas kerja pembaikan selesai.

The contractor cleaned the drain after the repair work was completed. (neutral/formal)

The noun directly after the active verb is not arbitrary. Pesakit undergoes the caused sitting, keputusan is the text read, resit is moved into a container, and longkang reaches a cleaner state.

πŸ’‘
Memorize the smallest useful construction, not just the headword: dudukkan X di Y, bacakan X kepada Y, masukkan X ke dalam Y, bersihkan X dengan Y.

Some lexical families license more than one established frame. Alongside membacakan cerita kepada adik, standard Malaysian Malay has the beneficiary-first double-object construction Ibu membacakan adik cerita. In the latter, adik is traditionally analyzed as the objek tepat (primary object) and cerita as the objek sipi (secondary object).

Ayah membacakan anak-anaknya kisah Sang Kancil sebelum tidur.

Father read his children a Sang Kancil tale before bedtime. (neutral)

Valency becomes visible in the passive

Within a particular argument frame, the selected object of an active meN-...-kan verb can normally become the subject of a di-...-kan passive. This makes passive and relative constructions a useful test of the frame actually chosen.

Pesakit itu didudukkan di kerusi berhampiran tingkap.

The patient was seated in a chair near the window. (neutral)

Keputusan undian akan dibacakan kepada semua ahli selepas rehat.

The voting result will be read aloud to all members after the break. (formal)

Resit yang dimasukkan ke dalam sampul itu mestilah resit asal.

The receipt put into the envelope must be the original receipt. (formal instruction)

Kawasan yang telah dibersihkan akan dibuka semula petang ini.

The area that has been cleaned will reopen this afternoon. (formal announcement)

The corresponding noun phrasesβ€”pesakit yang didudukkan, keputusan yang dibacakan, resit yang dimasukkan, and kawasan yang dibersihkanβ€”all promote the object selected in their respective active frames. Malay itself also has a beneficiary-first alternative with certain verbs: Adik dibacakan cerita oleh ibu corresponds to Ibu membacakan adik cerita. Voice therefore follows the argument structure of the construction actually chosen, not a single rule imposed on every -kan derivative.

First- and second-person passives normally place the actor before the bare derived verb: surat itu saya bacakan, not surat itu saya membacakan. The -kan remains; only the active meN- layer is absent.

Surat itu akan saya bacakan kepada nenek malam ini.

I will read that letter aloud to Grandmother tonight. (neutral)

Competition with -i and simpler constructions

The neighboring suffix -i often selects a location, recipient, or affected target, whereas -kan often selects a moved theme, caused participant, or benefactive theme. That contrast is real, but only where both lexical families are established.

Compare mendudukkan kanak-kanak di kerusi β€œseat the child in a chair” with menduduki kerusi itu β€œoccupy that chair.” In the first, the child is caused to sit; in the second, the chair is the occupied location.

Petugas mendudukkan kanak-kanak itu di barisan hadapan.

The attendant seated the child in the front row. (neutral)

Wakil kawasan itu telah menduduki kerusi parlimen tersebut selama dua penggal.

The constituency representative held that parliamentary seat for two terms. (formal)

Similarly, memasukkan fail ke dalam kabinet causes the file to enter, while memasuki bangunan means entering the building oneself. These are different lexical families and valency patterns, not interchangeable suffixes.

Pengawal memasukkan pelawat itu ke dalam senarai tetamu.

The guard entered the visitor on the guest list. (neutral/formal)

Pelawat hanya dibenarkan memasuki bangunan melalui pintu utama.

Visitors are only allowed to enter the building through the main entrance. (formal)

There is no productive -i counterpart for every -kan word: membacai and membersihi are not standard substitutes for membacakan and membersihkan. Where no established alternation exists, a semantic slogan about -i versus -kan cannot create one.

Lexicalization sets the real limits

The suffix can motivate a derivative without predicting all its senses. Membesarkan may mean enlarge, amplify, or raise a child. Menjalankan can mean cause something to run, carry out a duty, operate a program, or conduct an activity. Mengemukakan conventionally means putting forward a proposal, application, objection, or argument. These collocations are learned lexical families.

Jawatankuasa akan mengemukakan cadangan itu kepada kementerian minggu depan.

The committee will submit the proposal to the ministry next week. (formal)

Pertubuhan itu menjalankan program bimbingan untuk murid sekolah rendah.

The organization runs a mentoring program for primary-school pupils. (formal/neutral)

A dictionary-listed derivative is not necessarily fully compositional. Removing -kan from menjalankan tugas does not yield an equivalent menjalan tugas. Nor does a dictionary entry mean that every imaginable noun can fill every complement slot. Corpus examples and dictionary example sentences reveal preferred collocations.

Productivity therefore lies between two extremes. It is more than a list of unrelated words, because learners can recognize causative and participant-changing patterns. It is less than a mathematical operation, because convention blocks or redirects many plausible coinages.

πŸ’‘
Treat -kan as a productive schema plus lexical families. Use the schema to understand new words, then verify the whole derivative, its objects, and its collocations.

Formal writing and conversation

Formal Malaysian prose normally shows the full active or passive form: mendudukkan, membacakan, memasukkan, membersihkan, didudukkan, dibacakan. Commands and first- or second-person passives legitimately expose the bare derived form, but ordinary actor-first declaratives generally retain meN-.

Conversation (informal) often chooses shorter, high-frequency paraphrases instead of a marked derivative. Compare the following pairs:

Careful/formal expressionConversational paraphrase
Petugas mendudukkan mereka di ruang menunggu.Petugas suruh mereka duduk di ruang menunggu.
Dia membacakan mesej itu kepada saya.Dia baca mesej itu kuat-kuat untuk saya.
Saya memasukkan gambar itu ke dalam folder ini.Saya letak gambar itu dalam folder ini.
Kami membersihkan bilik stor.Kami kemas bilik stor.

The alternatives do not always have identical nuance: kemas is β€œtidy,” not necessarily β€œclean,” and suruh duduk makes the instruction more explicit. They illustrate how register changes packaging, not how standard suffixes may be dropped at random.

Petugas suruh kami duduk di luar sekejap.

The staff member told us to sit outside for a while. (informal conversation)

Boleh bacakan mesej ini kuat-kuat?

Could you read this message aloud? (informal request)

Commands such as Masukkan nombor PIN anda and Bersihkan meja ini are standard and neutral, not defective active clauses. The command construction licenses the bare derived verb. In spontaneous speech, masuk nombor PIN may be heard, but formal instructions should retain the established standard form masukkan.

Common Mistakes

1. Treating every imaginable derivative as acceptable.

❌ Kita boleh menambahkan -kan pada sebarang kata dasar jika maksudnya logik.

Incorrect claim β€” productive patterns remain constrained by established Malaysian usage.

βœ… Kita perlu menyemak kata terbitan serta pola objeknya dalam kamus.

We need to check the derivative and its object pattern in a dictionary.

2. Treating a lexicalized word as completely compositional.

❌ Menjalankan tugas hanya bermaksud membuat tugas itu berjalan.

Incorrect β€” menjalankan tugas is the lexicalized collocation 'carry out a duty.'

βœ… Pegawai itu menjalankan tugasnya dengan teliti.

The officer carried out her duties carefully. (formal/neutral)

3. Misidentifying a participant inside a kepada phrase as the passive subject.

❌ Dalam ayat 'Keputusan itu dibacakan kepada semua ahli', semua ahli ialah subjek pasif.

Incorrect analysis β€” semua ahli remains inside the kepada phrase.

βœ… Dalam ayat 'Keputusan itu dibacakan kepada semua ahli', keputusan itu ialah subjek pasif.

In this sentence, keputusan itu is the passive subject. (formal grammatical analysis)

4. Dropping meN- in an ordinary formal declarative clause.

❌ Pegawai itu masukkan data setiap pagi.

Nonstandard for careful writing β€” use the full active form memasukkan.

βœ… Pegawai itu memasukkan data setiap pagi.

The officer enters the data every morning. (formal/neutral)

Key Takeaways

  • Every -kan family has one or more attested object frames; learn the verb with those established frames.
  • Passive and relative constructions reveal which participant the derivative selects as its object.
  • Competition with -i exists only in established lexical pairs; suffix slogans cannot manufacture a missing word.
  • Dictionary senses and collocations may be lexicalized even when the general causative or benefactive pattern remains visible.
  • Formal writing favors full active morphology, while conversation may choose a natural paraphrase rather than indiscriminately dropping prefixes or suffixes.
