Knowing that -i often directs an event toward a location, recipient, or affected target does not by itself tell you which whole verb Malaysians use. The practical task is to learn both a productive argument pattern and the established lexical family: mengisi borang, mendatangi premis, mengirimi pelanggan maklumat, and menandai dokumen each license a different arrangement of participants.
This page concentrates on valency, lexicalization, and register. The formation page explains spelling and prefix layers, while the meaning page maps the semantic network. Here, -i is written with a hyphen only as an analytical label; actual words such as mendatangi and ditandai are solid.
The object is part of the verb's lexical pattern
An -i verb typically selects its affected target as the direct object. That is a useful prediction, but each family specifies what counts as a target and what other participant may follow.
| Established verb family | Direct object | Further participant | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| mengisi | container, vacancy, form, or space | contents in a dengan phrase | mengisi borang dengan maklumat |
| mendatangi | place, person, or affected experiencer reached | normally none | mendatangi premis |
| mengirimi | recipient | thing sent as a following noun phrase | mengirimi pelanggan pautan |
| menandai | item or surface marked | mark in a dengan phrase | menandai kotak dengan pelekat |
Sila isi borang ini dengan maklumat yang terkini.
Please fill in this form with up-to-date information. (neutral instruction)
Pegawai penguat kuasa mendatangi premis itu pada pukul sembilan pagi.
The enforcement officers visited the premises at nine in the morning. (formal/reporting)
Kami telah mengirimi setiap pelanggan pautan untuk menetapkan semula kata laluan.
We have sent every customer a link to reset their password. (formal service communication)
Petugas menandai setiap bungkusan dengan pelekat yang berlainan warna.
The staff member marked each package with a different-coloured sticker. (neutral)
English often marks these relations with in, to, at, or with. Malay does not translate that preposition mechanically: the derived verb itself helps determine which participant can stand immediately after it without a preposition.
Isi: a surface form with several constructions
The base isi already ends in i, so a bare command remains isi, not isii. In an ordinary active clause the common form is mengisi; in a third-person passive it is diisi. With the location-oriented frame, the container or information field is the direct object and its contents can follow dengan.
Aina mengisi botol itu dengan air masak sebelum keluar rumah.
Aina filled the bottle with boiled drinking water before leaving home. (neutral)
Jawatan kosong itu telah diisi oleh calon dalaman.
The vacancy has been filled by an internal candidate. (formal)
The noun phrases borang yang telah diisi “the completed form” and jawatan yang belum diisi “the vacancy that has not yet been filled” show why voice matters: the target remains the understood object even when it heads a relative construction.
When the thing supplied is foregrounded, standard writing can instead use mengisikan: mengisikan air ke dalam botol “put/fill water into the bottle.” That is a neighboring -kan mapping, not a free stylistic replacement in every sentence. Everyday Malaysian speech (informal) also often chooses a simpler paraphrase such as masukkan air dalam botol.
Datangi: direct goal, no ke
Datang ke pejabat is an intransitive motion phrase: pejabat follows the preposition ke. Mendatangi pejabat is transitive: the destination has become the direct object. Adding ke after mendatangi wrongly combines both frames.
Wartawan mendatangi keluarga mangsa untuk mendapatkan pengesahan.
Reporters approached the victim's family to obtain confirmation. (formal/reporting)
Rumah usang itu kerap didatangi pelancong yang ingin mengambil gambar.
That old house is often visited by tourists wanting to take photographs. (neutral)
The noun phrase rumah yang kami datangi semalam means “the house that we visited yesterday.” Because kami datangi is a first-person passive pattern, inserting active meN-—rumah yang kami mendatangi—is nonstandard for that intended analysis.
Register strongly affects choice. Mendatangi lokasi kejadian is at home in reports (formal), whereas a friend is much likelier to say Kami pergi ke tempat itu semalam or Kami datang ke rumahnya semalam (informal). The conversational paraphrase is not less grammatical; it packages the goal as a prepositional phrase rather than as an object.
Kirimi: recipient first
With mengirimi, the recipient is the selected object and the item sent may follow as another noun phrase: mengirimi peserta sijil. The theme-first alternative uses mengirimkan or, very commonly in Malaysia, menghantar plus kepada.
Urus setia mengirimi semua peserta sijil digital selepas seminar itu.
The secretariat sent all participants digital certificates after the seminar. (formal)
Urus setia menghantar sijil digital kepada semua peserta selepas seminar itu.
The secretariat sent digital certificates to all participants after the seminar. (neutral Malaysian alternative)
Both are natural, but their structures differ. In peserta yang dikirimi sijil, the head noun is the recipient. In sijil yang dikirimkan kepada peserta, it is the sent item. English permits both “send participants certificates” and “send certificates to participants,” yet Malay also signals the mapping on the verb.
Mengirimi is standard and useful in careful prose (formal/neutral). In spontaneous conversation, many Malaysian speakers choose hantar ... kepada ... or hantar ... dekat ...; the latter (informal) should not be copied into formal writing.
Tandai is not automatically tandakan
Menandai takes the object that receives a physical or administrative mark. The mark can appear with dengan. Menandakan, by contrast, commonly means “indicate; signify” and foregrounds a sign or event that points to a conclusion. The overlap comes from the root tanda, but the two verbs are not interchangeable in every context.
Penyelia menandai fail sulit itu dengan cop merah.
The supervisor marked the confidential file with a red stamp. (formal workplace context)
Bacaan suhu yang tinggi boleh menandakan jangkitan.
A high temperature reading may indicate an infection. (neutral/formal)
The phrase fail yang ditandai dengan cop merah identifies an affected file. For symbolic “marking” in the sense of commemorating an event, usage is lexical: Majlis itu menandai ulang tahun ke-50 penubuhan persatuan can occur in formal reporting, while Majlis itu diadakan sempena ulang tahun ke-50 is often a more idiomatic Malaysian paraphrase.
Productivity is constrained by the lexicon
The pattern is productive enough to help you interpret unfamiliar forms, but not free enough to license every imaginable derivative. Menduduki, for example, is a well-established family with meanings such as occupying a place, holding a rank, and sitting an examination. Those meanings cannot be computed merely from “sit + target.” Conversely, a logically plausible noun plus -i may be absent from careful Malaysian usage.
Dictionary listing also does not guarantee that every possible argument frame is current or equally neutral. A dictionary may record literary, older, specialized, or figurative senses alongside everyday ones. Learn the example frame, not just the headword, and notice labels such as (formal), (literary), or (regional: Indonesia) when comparing regional dictionaries.
Formal prose often retains full active and passive morphology: menandai, ditandai, mendatangi, didatangi. Conversation (informal) may use a bare verb in commands—Isi borang ini—or replace a marked derivative with a common analytic expression—pergi ke pejabat instead of mendatangi pejabat. A colloquial paraphrase is evidence about register, not permission to drop meN- indiscriminately from every declarative clause.
Common Mistakes
1. Keeping a preposition before the object of mendatangi.
❌ Pegawai itu mendatangi ke rumah saya pagi tadi.
Incorrect — mendatangi selects the goal directly, without ke.
✅ Pegawai itu mendatangi rumah saya pagi tadi.
The officer came to my house this morning. (formal/neutral)
2. Using the theme-first frame after mengirimi.
❌ Kami mengirimi pautan itu kepada semua pelanggan.
Mismatched frame — this puts the sent item first while retaining recipient-oriented mengirimi.
✅ Kami mengirimi semua pelanggan pautan itu.
We sent all the customers that link. (formal/neutral)
3. Treating menandai and menandakan as automatic synonyms.
❌ Kenaikan suhu menandai bahawa pesakit mungkin dijangkiti.
Awkward for the intended standard meaning 'indicates'; use menandakan.
✅ Kenaikan suhu menandakan bahawa pesakit mungkin dijangkiti.
The rise in temperature indicates that the patient may be infected. (formal)
4. Coining an unattested derivative because its meaning seems logical.
❌ Semua kata nama boleh dijadikan kata kerja hanya dengan menambahkan -i.
Incorrect claim — productive morphology is still constrained by lexical convention.
✅ Semak kata terbitan dan pola objeknya dalam kamus bahasa Melayu Malaysia.
Check the derivative and its object pattern in a Malaysian Malay dictionary.
Key Takeaways
- An -i family selects a characteristic target: container with mengisi, goal with mendatangi, recipient with mengirimi, and marked item with menandai.
- Learn the direct-object frame and the whole derivative together; neither English prepositions nor the suffix alone determines usage.
- Productive schemas coexist with lexicalized meanings and restrictions.
- Careful writing commonly uses the full active or passive form; conversation may prefer a simpler paraphrase rather than a mechanically shortened derivative.
- Keep analytical -i hyphenated, but write real forms such as mengirimi and ditandai solid.
