memper-...-i: Valency, Lexicalization, and Register in Malaysian Malay

Using memper-...-i well means knowing more than the shape of a word. Each established verb selects its own type of direct object, permits its own complements, and has its own register profile. The safest unit of learning is therefore a complete frame such as memperingati peristiwa or mempersenjatai pasukan dengan senjata. The textbook form memperkawani needs separate treatment because DBP lexicographers reject it despite its inclusion in the official grammar.

This page concentrates on those frames and their active-passive alternations. Formation is covered on the formation page, while the meaning page maps the semantic network. The pattern is severely restricted in prescribed Malaysian usage; it is not a stylistic ornament that can be attached wherever a longer verb sounds formal.

Direct objects are family-specific

The four dictionary-backed core verbs are transitive, but “takes a direct object” is only the beginning. The semantic role of that object differs by family. The disputed memperkawani is included below only to route learners to accepted alternatives, not counted as a fifth core verb:

VerbTypical direct objectAdditional materialRegister tendency
memperingatian event, anniversary, deceased person, or honored figureoccasion, ceremony, or memorial contextcommemorative (formal)
memperkawanidisputed; do not assign a productive frameuse mengawani for accompaniment or memperkawan for befriendingofficial sources conflict
mempersuamithe man taken as husbandnarrative contextmostly (literary)
memperisterithe woman taken as wifenarrative contextmostly (literary)
mempersenjataithe person or group armeddengan
  • weapons
news, security, policy (formal)

Persatuan itu menganjurkan forum untuk memperingati ulang tahun penubuhannya.

The association organized a forum to commemorate the anniversary of its founding. (formal)

Ketua jururawat meminta seorang petugas mengawani pesakit itu sehingga anaknya tiba.

The head nurse asked a staff member to keep the patient company until her child arrived.

Pihak berkuasa menuduh sindiket itu mempersenjatai anggotanya dengan pistol seludup.

The authorities accused the syndicate of arming its members with smuggled pistols. (formal)

For mempersenjatai, do not put the weapon in the direct-object slot and introduce the recipient with kepada. Malay organizes this like “arm the members with pistols”: mempersenjatai anggotanya dengan pistol, not mempersenjatai pistol kepada anggotanya.

💡
Memorize a short collocation with every verb. The object and its semantic role are part of the lexical entry, not predictable decoration.

Routing the disputed kawan family

Because the official grammar lists memperkawani but DBP's dictionary division rejects it, production should begin with the intended relation rather than with the disputed shape. The three dictionary-backed alternatives have different frames:

Intended relationVerified frameExample
take or treat someone as a friendmemperkawan + personDia memperkawan jiran baharunya.
accompany or keep someone companymengawani + personAdiknya mengawani dia di hospital.
cause two parties to become friendsmemperkawankan + A + dengan + BAliza memperkawankan Sue dengan Mei Ling.

Dia cuba memperkawan jiran baharunya dengan mengajak mereka minum petang.

He tried to befriend his new neighbors by inviting them to afternoon tea.

Adiknya mengawani dia sepanjang malam di wad kecemasan.

Her younger sibling kept her company all night in the emergency ward.

Guru itu memperkawankan semula dua murid yang telah berselisih faham.

The teacher helped two pupils who had fallen out become friends again.

Memperkawankan introduces the second party with dengan when both are expressed. It is a memper-...-kan word, not evidence that disputed memperkawani has become dictionary-established. Transparent source notes are essential here because “the grammar cites it” and “the dictionaries accept it” lead to different conclusions.

Active and passive clauses

In a canonical active clause, the actor precedes the memper-...-i verb and the affected or related participant follows it. A third-person passive replaces memper- with diper- and makes that participant the clause anchor. The accepted mengawani alternative follows its own parallel alternation, mengawani → dikawani.

ActivePassive
Rakyat memperingati peristiwa itu.Peristiwa itu diperingati oleh rakyat.
Pegawai mengawani tetamu itu.Tetamu itu dikawani oleh pegawai.
Kumpulan itu mempersenjatai anggotanya.Anggotanya dipersenjatai oleh kumpulan itu.

Peristiwa bersejarah itu diperingati setiap tahun pada 31 Ogos.

That historic event is commemorated every year on 31 August. (formal)

Tetamu kenamaan itu dikawani oleh pegawai protokol sepanjang majlis.

The distinguished guest was accompanied by a protocol officer throughout the event. (formal)

Pengawal tersebut tidak dipersenjatai semasa bertugas di pintu awam.

The guards were not armed while stationed at the public entrance. (formal)

The oleh phrase is optional when the actor is unknown or unimportant. Mangsa diperingati and pengawal dipersenjatai are complete clauses. If identifying responsibility matters, particularly in reporting about weapons, include the actor or choose an active clause. Voice selection can change the rhetorical focus even when it does not change the event.

Aspect and modality stand outside the solid verified verb: telah diperingati, akan dikawani, mungkin dipersenjatai. English learners sometimes split a long Malay word because English expresses the same ideas with several words. Malay writes the derivational and voice material together.

Role-assignment verbs in narrative

Mempersuami and memperisteri take a human direct object whose marital role is supplied by the base noun. They are grammatical, but their most natural habitat is elevated narrative, chronicles, or discussion of older texts (literary).

Dalam cerita rakyat itu, puteri bongsu mempersuami pemuda yang jujur.

In that folktale, the youngest princess takes the honest young man as her husband. (literary)

Setelah menaiki takhta, baginda memperisteri puteri dari negeri seberang.

After ascending the throne, His Majesty took a princess from across the sea as his wife. (literary)

The passive counterparts dipersuami and diperisteri are possible when discourse centers on the person entering that role, but they are even more marked. Contemporary conversation normally avoids the whole family:

Dia kahwin dengan kawan lamanya tahun lepas.

She married her old friend last year. (informal)

The conversational kahwin dengan does not encode “husband” or “wife” in the verb itself. That loss of detail is usually acceptable because context supplies it. A paraphrase need not preserve every morphological nuance to be pragmatically equivalent.

Formal wording and conversational paraphrase

The core verbs do not all have the same stylistic weight. Compare formal or marked formulations with likely conversational alternatives:

Formal or marked formulationConversational paraphrase
Kita akan memperingati ulang tahun itu.Kita buat acara nak kenang hari tu. **(informal)**
Petugas akan mengawani beliau.Ada orang akan teman dia. **(informal)**
Pasukan itu tidak dipersenjatai.Pasukan tu tak dibekalkan senjata. **(informal)**

Kita buat acara kecil nak kenang hari tu.

We'll hold a small event to remember that day. (informal)

Jangan risau, ada orang akan teman dia di hospital.

Don't worry, someone will keep her company at the hospital. (informal)

Pasukan tu tak dibekalkan senjata.

That unit wasn't supplied with weapons. (informal)

Forms such as tu, tak, and a bare conversational teman are labeled (informal). They belong in speech and messages, not in an official report. Conversely, mempersenjatai is entirely at home in security reporting. Avoid treating memperkawani as merely an elevated synonym: the obstacle is the explicit lexicographic rejection, not just register.

Competition with neighboring families

The standard alternatives are not merely shorter versions with the same morphology. Memperbaik means “make better,” membaiki means “repair,” and melengkapi means “complete, supplement, or equip.” Improvement-sense memperbaiki is widespread but prescriptively rejected as redundant in Malaysian formal usage; its dictionary-recorded “do good to” sense is (literary, archaic). Memperlengkapi should not be imported as a neutral Malaysian formation.

Pasukan teknikal akan membaiki alat pengimbas yang rosak.

The technical team will repair the broken scanner.

Cadangan ini bertujuan memperbaik proses pemantauan.

This proposal aims to improve the monitoring process. (formal)

Latihan amali melengkapi penerangan dalam buku panduan.

The practical exercise complements the explanation in the handbook. (formal)

These alternatives also select their own objects. Membaiki alat, memperbaik proses, and melengkapi penerangan are ordinary frames. Do not reason that because mempersenjatai pasukan is valid, any noun naming what is supplied can enter the same template.

Historical evidence is not a modern production rule

Advanced readers often encounter memperbaiki in older literature, in Indonesian material, or in contemporary Malaysian writing that does not follow the prescriptive norm. These attestations are real, but they answer different questions. A historical dictionary example can establish an older meaning; a corpus hit can establish that someone used a string; neither automatically establishes the preferred form for a modern Malaysian report.

For productive formal writing, identify the intended event first. A technician membaiki damaged equipment. A committee memperbaik a procedure or menambah baik a service. An appendix melengkapi a report. A group mempersenjatai its members. These are different lexical frames, not stylistic variants generated by adding or removing syllables.

Jurutera itu membaiki pam yang rosak, kemudian memperbaik reka bentuk sistem saliran.

The engineer repaired the broken pump, then improved the drainage-system design.

Senarai semak ini melengkapi prosedur keselamatan sedia ada.

This checklist complements the existing safety procedure. (formal)

The same discipline applies to passive clauses: pam dibaiki, prosedur diperbaik, laporan dilengkapi, and anggota dipersenjatai. Choosing the right active form determines the right passive family. A long passive is not validated merely because its components look familiar.

💡
A dictionary-listed historical sense does not make an affix productive today. Verify the contemporary meaning and the argument frame, not merely the spelling.

Common Mistakes

1. Putting the supplied weapon in the direct-object slot.

❌ Sindiket itu mempersenjatai pistol kepada anggotanya.

Incorrect — the armed recipient, not the weapon, is the direct object.

✅ Sindiket itu mempersenjatai anggotanya dengan pistol.

The syndicate armed its members with pistols.

2. Combining passive morphology with active word order.

❌ Persatuan itu diperingati hari bersejarah tersebut.

Incorrect — this actor-first frame requires active memperingati.

✅ Persatuan itu memperingati hari bersejarah tersebut.

The association commemorates that historic day. (formal)

3. Reversing the marital role encoded by the base.

❌ Putera itu mempersuami wanita pilihannya.

Incorrect role assignment — suami names a husband, so a male subject taking a woman as wife requires memperisteri.

✅ Putera itu memperisteri wanita pilihannya.

The prince took his chosen woman as his wife. (literary)

4. Treating a familiar regional form as prescribed Malaysian.

❌ Kami akan memperbaiki dan memperlengkapi sistem itu.

Nonstandard for the intended Malaysian formal meanings.

✅ Kami akan memperbaik dan melengkapi sistem itu.

We will improve and complete that system. (formal)

5. Using disputed memperkawani when a dictionary-backed relation is clear.

❌ Petugas itu memperkawani pesakit tersebut.

Rejected by DBP lexicographers — choose a dictionary-backed verb for the intended relation.

✅ Petugas itu mengawani pesakit tersebut.

The staff member kept the patient company.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn each verified verb with its object: memperingati peristiwa and mempersenjatai pasukan dengan senjata; for the disputed memperkawani, choose memperkawan or mengawani by meaning.
  • Passive diper-...-i makes that direct object the clause anchor; oleh + actor is optional.
  • Mempersuami and memperisteri are chiefly literary; everyday speech usually chooses kahwin dengan or menikahi.
  • Formal mempersenjatai contrasts naturally with conversational bekalkan senjata.
  • Use contemporary Malaysian memperbaik/membaiki and melengkapi instead of treating transparent-looking analogies as freely available.
