memper-...-i: Formation and Allomorphy in Malaysian Malay

The analytical label memper-...-i suggests a tidy circumfix, but the Malaysian standard does not let speakers wrap it freely around any suitable-looking base. Its dictionary-verified members form a very small lexical class, including memperingati “commemorate,” mempersuami “take as a husband,” memperisteri “take as a wife,” and mempersenjatai “arm; equip with weapons.” Memperkawani requires a warning: Tatabahasa Dewan lists it as an example of the pattern, but DBP's dictionary division explicitly says it is absent from both Kamus Dewan and Kamus Pelajar. The dictionary-backed alternatives are memperkawan “befriend” and mengawani “accompany.”

This page treats formation and spelling. The meaning page examines the different meanings, and the usage page treats objects, voice, and register. A central difficulty must be stated honestly: forms widespread in Indonesian or common in unedited Malaysian usage are not automatically standard Malaysian formations.

The abstract template and the real word

For analysis, write memper- + BASE + -i. In an actual word, remove the analytical hyphens and spaces. The base normally remains visible; memper- does not trigger the root-initial consonant deletion associated with some meN- allomorphs.

Proposed analysisSurface formStatus in Malaysian standard usage
memper- + ingat + -imemperingatiestablished: commemorate; honor in remembrance
memper- + kawan + -imemperkawanilisted by the official grammar, but rejected by DBP lexicographers; use memperkawan or mengawani by meaning
memper- + suami + -imempersuamiestablished: take as a husband; adjacent ii surfaces as one i
memper- + isteri + -imemperisteriestablished: take as a wife; adjacent ii surfaces as one i
memper- + senjata + -imempersenjataiestablished: equip with weapons
💡
Official-source conflict: *Tatabahasa Dewan* preserves **memperkawani** in its short list of **memper-...-i** examples, but DBP's dictionary division says the form is absent from *Kamus Dewan* and *Kamus Pelajar*. For contemporary production, choose dictionary-backed **memperkawan**, **mengawani**, or **memperkawankan** according to meaning.

This restricted table does not license two especially tempting extensions. Malaysian DBP guidance explicitly treats improvement-sense memperbaiki as redundant and recommends memperbaik “make better” or membaiki “repair.” The dictionary records memperbaiki with an older sense, “do good to; treat properly” (literary, archaic), and also records its widespread nonstandard use descriptively. Memperlengkapi is familiar from Indonesian; Malaysian Malay normally has melengkapi. A learner who sees only formal segmentation will miss both facts.

Majlis itu diadakan untuk memperingati mangsa banjir besar tersebut.

The ceremony was held to commemorate the victims of that major flood. (formal)

Tatabahasa Dewan menyenaraikan memperkawani, tetapi bahagian perkamusan DBP menolaknya.

Tatabahasa Dewan lists memperkawani, but DBP's dictionary division rejects it. (academic)

Kumpulan itu didakwa mempersenjatai anggotanya secara haram.

The group was alleged to have armed its members illegally. (formal)

💡
The spelling may be transparent while membership in the class is not. “I can segment it” never proves “Malaysian Malay accepts it.”

No nasal deletion inside memper-

The prefix has the stable surface shape memper- before the verified bases in memperingati and mempersenjatai; the disputed form memperkawani would show the same transparent boundary in the grammatical analysis. Do not imitate the consonant alternations in menulis from tulis or memukul from pukul. In particular, the s of senjata remains: mempersenjatai, not memperenjatai.

Kerajaan tidak bercadang mempersenjatai pengawal sukarela itu.

The government does not intend to arm those volunteer guards. (formal)

Pameran itu memperingati ulang tahun ke-50 penubuhan persatuan tersebut.

The exhibition commemorates the association's 50th anniversary. (formal)

The spelling is solid even when the word is long. Write mempersenjatai, never memper-senjata-i in a sentence. Hyphens belong only to linguistic discussion, where they show the two edges of the analytical pattern.

Root categories are descriptive, not predictive

The verified bases span more than one lexical type. Ingat belongs to a cognition/remembrance family, while suami, isteri, and senjata are nouns naming social roles or an instrument class. This distribution helps explain the meanings of existing derivatives, but it does not define a productive category rule. Most nouns naming roles or equipment do not automatically admit memper-...-i.

English derivation makes the trap especially attractive: friend, arm, and husband can all function as verbs without an overt affix. A learner may expect Malay to offer one equally general conversion pattern. It does not. The noun senjata licenses mempersenjatai, while another equipment noun may require membekalkan X kepada Y, melengkapi Y dengan X, or a separate lexical verb. The conventional family, not the English part of speech, decides.

Pembekal itu melengkapi makmal dengan peralatan keselamatan.

The supplier equips the laboratory with safety equipment. (formal)

This sentence does not motivate memperalatani. Although peralatan is a noun and the intended relation resembles equipping, Malaysian Malay already packages it with melengkapi...dengan. Root-category membership is therefore a necessary descriptive fact but never sufficient evidence for a new derivative.

Vowel contact and the spouse terms

Two established relationship verbs expose a spelling wrinkle. Historically transparent analysis would produce mempersuamii from suami and memperisterii from isteri, but standard surface spelling has only one final i: mempersuami, memperisteri. This is conventional haplology—the adjacent identical vowels are not both written—not a general license to delete letters elsewhere.

Dalam hikayat itu, puteri tersebut enggan mempersuami lelaki pilihan ayahandanya.

In the tale, the princess refuses to take the man chosen by her father as her husband. (literary)

Watak raja itu bercadang memperisteri puteri dari negeri jiran.

The king character intends to take a princess from a neighboring state as his wife. (literary)

These verbs are rare in everyday contemporary conversation and are readily associated with literary narrative, historical discussion, or legal-religious contexts. Their surface spelling cannot be generalized to bases ending in other vowels. Senjata retains its final a before i: mempersenjatai.

Why baik and lengkap are traps

The requested-looking formations baik → memperbaiki and lengkap → memperlengkapi illustrate exactly why learners need Malaysian lexical verification. English encourages a single productive “make/equip” model, while Indonesian exposure makes both long forms look familiar. Malaysian prescription divides the work differently:

Intended meaningPreferred Malaysian formComment
make a system bettermemperbaik sistem / menambah baik sistemnot improvement-sense memperbaiki
repair a machinemembaiki mesinlexical repair verb
complete or supplement a setmelengkapi setnot memperlengkapi
equip a unit with weaponsmempersenjatai unitverified member of the restricted class

Jabatan itu mahu memperbaik sistem aduan dalam talian.

The department wants to improve the online complaints system. (formal)

Juruteknik sedang membaiki mesin pencetak yang rosak.

The technician is repairing the broken printer.

Lampiran ini melengkapi maklumat dalam laporan utama.

This appendix supplements the information in the main report. (formal)

There is no sound rule that changes memperlengkapi into melengkapi. These are competing derivational choices, and Malaysian usage selects the latter. Likewise, the difference between memperbaik and memperbaiki is not a casual optional deletion of i. It is a difference between standard morphological families and, for memperbaiki, an older lexical meaning or a widespread nonstandard extension.

💡
When a Malaysian dictionary and a grammar ruling seem to conflict, distinguish descriptive recording from prescriptive status. A recorded string may carry an older meaning or be labeled as common but nonstandard.

How to verify a candidate

Search the complete derivative in a Malaysian source, then inspect the base entry and usage note. A result somewhere in the database may be an Indonesian term, a historical quotation, a user question, or a correction—not an endorsement. Confirm the definition, register, example, and grammatical guidance. For this class, analogy is particularly unsafe because the secure list is so small.

Do not confuse three neighboring structures

Long Malay verbs can look as though they belong to the same template when they do not. Memperbaik contains active memper- but no final -i suffix; its last letter belongs to the adjective base baik. Membaiki belongs to the meN-...-i family built on baik, with the root-initial b retained after mem-. Mempersenjatai is one of the restricted memper-...-i verbs. The spelling alone must be paired with a known base:

WordRecoverable baseRelevant pattern
memperbaikbaikmemper- + adjective
membaikibaikmeN- + base + -i
mempersenjataisenjatarestricted memper- + base + -i

Pihak majlis akan memperbaik pencahayaan di laluan pejalan kaki.

The council will improve the lighting on the pedestrian walkway. (formal)

Mekanik itu membaiki brek kereta saya pagi tadi.

The mechanic repaired my car's brakes this morning.

Segmenting memperbaik as memperba + -i would invent a nonexistent base ba. Conversely, deleting -i from mempersenjatai changes an established verb family. Dictionary verification begins with a plausible independently attested base, not with mechanically stripping the last letter.

Passive voice replaces the active memper- layer with diper-, while the lexical base and -i relation remain in verified diperingati and dipersenjatai. Do not use the mechanically possible-looking diperkawani as evidence against DBP's lexical ruling; use dikawani, ditemani, or another verified alternative according to meaning.

Hari bersejarah itu diperingati di seluruh negara.

That historic day is commemorated throughout the country. (formal)

Pasukan tersebut telah dipersenjatai dengan senapang automatik.

The unit had been armed with automatic rifles. (formal)

Common Mistakes

1. Writing analytical hyphens in a real word.

❌ Mereka mahu memper-senjata-i pasukan itu.

Incorrect — analytical boundaries are not written in an ordinary word.

✅ Mereka mahu mempersenjatai pasukan itu.

They want to arm that unit.

2. Deleting the root-initial s by analogy with meN-.

❌ Kerajaan akan memperenjatai pengawal itu.

Incorrect — senjata keeps its initial s after memper-.

✅ Kerajaan akan mempersenjatai pengawal itu.

The government will arm that guard unit. (formal)

3. Using memperbaiki for neutral modern “improve.”

❌ Kami akan memperbaiki mutu perkhidmatan.

Nonstandard in prescribed Malaysian usage for the intended meaning 'improve.'

✅ Kami akan memperbaik mutu perkhidmatan.

We will improve the quality of the service. (formal)

4. Importing memperlengkapi as though it were neutral Malaysian Malay.

❌ Dokumen ini memperlengkapi permohonan saya.

Not accepted in prescribed Malaysian usage — the standard verb here is melengkapi.

✅ Dokumen ini melengkapi permohonan saya.

This document completes my application. (formal)

Key Takeaways

  • Write the analytical pattern as memper-...-i, but write actual forms such as memperingati and mempersenjatai solid.
  • Do not delete a root-initial consonant: senjata → mempersenjatai.
  • Mempersuami and memperisteri conventionally show only one final i.
  • Official sources conflict on memperkawani: the grammar lists it, but DBP lexicographers reject it; current production should use dictionary-backed memperkawan or mengawani.
  • Improvement-sense memperbaiki and memperlengkapi are not neutral prescribed Malaysian models; use memperbaik/membaiki and melengkapi as appropriate.
  • Verify each whole derivative, its meaning, and its register. This class is lexical, not freely productive.
