memper-: Formation and Allomorphy in Malaysian Malay

The Malaysian prefix memper- forms established verbs such as memperbesar “enlarge,” memperpanjang “extend,” and mempercepat “accelerate.” Its visible shape is stable: the base stays intact after memper-, and the complete word is written solid.

This page treats formation and spelling. The meaning page maps the causative and degree readings, while the usage page covers argument structure, lexicalization, and register. The crucial formation fact is that an adjective can form a complete memper- verb without an automatic -kan.

The stable template

In linguistic analysis, write memper- + BASE. In ordinary Malaysian Rumi, remove the analytical boundary and write one word. Unlike productive meN- attachment, memper- does not delete an initial p, t, s, or k from the base.

Pihak berkuasa mahu memperpanjang tempoh percubaan selama sebulan.

The authorities want to extend the trial period by one month. (formal)

Laluan khas ini dapat mempercepat proses pemeriksaan.

Universiti bercadang memperluas program itu ke Sabah dan Sarawak.

The university plans to expand the program to Sabah and Sarawak. (formal)

Latihan berkala membantu memperkuat kemahiran pasukan.

Regular training helps strengthen the team's skills. (neutral)

💡
Read memperpanjang as memper- + panjang, not as productive meN- + panjang. The p belongs to the base and must remain.

No root-initial deletion

Productive meN- turns pilih into memilih, because p is deleted after the assimilating nasal prefix. That rule does not operate inside memper-. Thus panjang → memperpanjang, kuat → memperkuat, and tinggi → mempertinggi, with every initial consonant visible.

Penerbit mempertinggi mutu cetakan edisi baharu itu.

The publisher improved the print quality of the new edition. (formal)

Writing memerpanjang would erase part of the prefix and part of the recoverable base. Writing memperanjang would wrongly import p-deletion. The fixed sequence is memper-, followed by the preserved base.

This stability also helps dictionary lookup. From memperluas, remove memper- and search luas. From memperkuat, search kuat, not uat. A Malaysian dictionary may list the derivative within the base's word family rather than as an independent headword.

The main category: gradable adjectives

The most transparent and extendable formation combines memper- with an adjective describing a scale. Besar, panjang, cepat, luas, kuat, tinggi, dalam, and jelas offer dimensions whose degree can be increased. Their derivatives are transitive change verbs: an actor or cause changes something along that scale.

Pengerusi meminta pembentang memperjelas cadangan terakhir.

The chair asked the presenter to clarify the final proposal. (formal)

Pembacaan tambahan akan memperdalam pemahaman peserta tentang isu itu.

The additional reading will deepen the participants' understanding of the issue. (formal)

The adjective remains identifiable, but category membership is not an unrestricted license. Some possible-looking adjectives prefer another established verb, a phrase with menjadikan, or a form with a different affix. Formation is productive enough to reveal a pattern and lexical enough to require confirmation.

English obscures this pattern because it alternates among several devices: enlarge, lengthen, accelerate, broaden, and strengthen. Malay can align these different English shapes under memper- + adjective, yet each Malaysian derivative still has to be conventional.

Beyond adjectives: lexical families

Some memper- verbs are built on or historically related to nominal and bound bases, but their meanings are more lexical. Memperalat relates to alat “tool” and means use or exploit someone or something as a tool. Memperdaya means deceive or trick and belongs to the daya family, but its meaning cannot be generated simply as “make more daya.” Memperoleh “obtain” is a high-frequency lexical verb whose meaning is not a degree increase from ordinary oleh.

Sindiket itu memperalat akaun bank mangsa untuk menerima wang.

The syndicate exploited the victim's bank account to receive money. (formal)

Penipu itu memperdaya mangsa dengan tawaran kerja palsu.

The scammer deceived the victim with a fake job offer. (neutral)

Pemohon yang berjaya akan memperoleh surat tawaran minggu depan.

Successful applicants will receive an offer letter next week. (formal)

These words show why a dictionary base is necessary but not sufficient. Recovering alat, daya, or oleh tells you the family; it does not prove a freely compositional meaning. Learn lexical memper- verbs together with their definitions.

The relationship to per- families

The segment per links memper- verbs to a broader derivational network. In a useful synchronic analysis, the active form contains memper-, while the corresponding passive has diper-: memperbesar → diperbesar, memperpanjang → diperpanjang. Related nouns may contain per-...-an, as in perluasan beside memperluas, but the noun and verb patterns are separate conventional formations.

Kawasan menunggu itu akan diperbesar pada tahun hadapan.

The waiting area will be enlarged next year. (formal passive)

Tempoh pendaftaran telah diperpanjang hingga hari Jumaat.

The registration period has been extended until Friday. (formal passive)

Do not turn this relationship into a mechanical multi-step recipe. A learner cannot take any imagined per- noun, add active meN-, and assume that the resulting memper- verb is acceptable. Word families encode real patterns, but the lexicon controls which members exist.

Do not add -kan automatically

For gradable adjectives, the simple prefix often completes the verb: memperbesar, memperpanjang, mempercepat, memperluas. Forms such as memperbesarkan, memperpanjangkan, and mempercepatkan are tempting because -kan often marks causation elsewhere, but prescribed Malaysian usage treats the added suffix as redundant for these meanings.

This does not mean that memper-...-kan never exists. Verified families such as mempertemukan and memperdengarkan have their own lexical structure. The memper-...-kan formation page explains why those established words do not license unrestricted suffix stacking.

💡
First ask whether the dictionary gives a simple memper- + adjective verb. If it does, do not add -kan merely because English has “make” in a paraphrase.

Common Mistakes

1. Writing an analytical hyphen in the actual word.

❌ Kita perlu memper-panjang tempoh ujian.

Incorrect — the complete derivative is written solid.

✅ Kita perlu memperpanjang tempoh ujian.

We need to extend the test period. (neutral)

2. Applying meN- deletion inside memper-.

❌ Langkah itu dapat memperuat kedudukan syarikat.

Incorrect — kuat keeps its initial k after memper-.

✅ Langkah itu dapat memperkuat kedudukan syarikat.

That measure can strengthen the company's position. (formal)

3. Adding -kan to a complete adjective-based form.

❌ Sistem ini akan mempercepatkan urusan pelanggan.

Nonstandard in prescribed Malaysian usage for this simple degree-increase meaning.

✅ Sistem ini akan mempercepat urusan pelanggan.

This system will speed up customer transactions. (formal)

4. Coining a form solely because its meaning seems transparent.

❌ Saya boleh menambah memper- pada setiap kata adjektif.

Incorrect claim — lexical convention restricts which derivatives are established.

✅ Saya menyemak kata terbitan lengkap dalam kamus bahasa Melayu Malaysia.

I check the complete derivative in a Malaysian Malay dictionary. (neutral)

Key Takeaways

  • Write analytical memper- + base, but write actual forms such as memperbesar solid.
  • Preserve the full base: panjang → memperpanjang, kuat → memperkuat.
  • Gradable adjectives form the clearest pattern, though not every imaginable derivative is established.
  • Lexical verbs such as memperalat, memperdaya, and memperoleh require whole-word learning.
  • Simple memper- often needs no -kan; verify a full memper-...-kan family separately.
