Learning ke-...-an means learning both a productive pattern and the grammatical habits of individual words. A derivative may head a noun phrase, modify another noun inside an established compound, or serve as a predicate whose subject undergoes an unwanted state. The circumfix suggests a family resemblance, but it does not guarantee the same word class, arguments, or register for every base.
This page focuses on those usage choices. For the two-part word-building template, see formation and allomorphy; for the network of abstract, domain, excessive, and affected readings, see meanings.
Nouns: giving a quality or event its own reference
Kebaikan, kesihatan, kedinginan, and nominal kehilangan can head noun phrases. Once nominalized, the concept can be possessed, measured, evaluated, or selected as a topic. The participant connected to it commonly follows the noun, much like a possessor or an English of-phrase.
| Noun phrase | Relation expressed | Typical register |
|---|---|---|
| kebaikan cadangan itu | the merits of that proposal | neutral/formal |
| kesihatan pekerja | the workers' health | neutral/formal |
| kedinginan malam | the coldness of the night | literary/descriptive |
| kehilangan pendapatan | loss of income | neutral/formal |
Kebaikan cadangan itu perlu dibandingkan dengan kos pelaksanaannya.
The merits of that proposal need to be compared with the cost of implementing it. (formal)
Majikan bertanggungjawab melindungi kesihatan pekerja.
Employers are responsible for protecting workers' health. (formal)
Kedinginan pagi di lereng bukit itu membuatkan kami mempercepat langkah.
The morning cold on the hillside made us quicken our pace. (literary/descriptive)
Kehilangan pendapatan menyebabkan keluarga itu menangguhkan perpindahan mereka.
The loss of income caused the family to postpone their move.
English usually signals these relations with possessive 's, an attributive noun, or of. Malay generally places the related noun after the head without an equivalent of of: kesihatan pekerja, not an invented prepositional copy of health of workers.
Predicate behavior is lexical, not uniform
Some ke-...-an forms can function as predicates, but their argument patterns differ. Predicate kehilangan is transitive: the affected possessor is the subject and the lost entity can be its direct object. Kehujanan is normally intransitive: its subject is caught in rain. Excessive-degree forms such as kebesaran predicate an unsuitable degree of a property.
Nadia kehilangan kad pengenal ketika menaiki bas.
Nadia lost her identity card while boarding the bus.
Kami kehujanan kerana bas terakhir tidak berhenti.
We got caught in the rain because the last bus did not stop.
Seluar ini kepanjangan untuk saya.
These trousers are too long for me.
With cold-state words, natural Malaysian sentences often use kedinginan or kesejukan after a bodily reaction such as menggigil βshiver,β rather than forcing the form into the same direct-object frame as kehilangan.
Anak itu menggigil kesejukan selepas bermain dalam hujan.
The child was shivering from the cold after playing in the rain.
The English learner's temptation is to infer a single frame βsubject + ke-...-an + object.β That works for Saya kehilangan kunci, but not for Kami kehujanan. The argument structure is part of the lexical entry.
Competition with adjectives and plain clauses
Nominalization changes what the discourse is about. Sihat directly describes someone; kesihatan turns health into an entity that can improve, decline, or become a policy target. Baik evaluates something; kebaikan lets speakers enumerate merits or invoke a beneficiary's good.
Selepas berehat dua minggu, dia sudah sihat.
After resting for two weeks, she is well again.
Kesihatannya bertambah baik selepas dia mula bersenam.
Her health improved after she began exercising.
Cadangan ini baik, tetapi kita masih perlu mengira kosnya.
This proposal is good, but we still need to calculate its cost.
Satu daripada kebaikan cadangan ini ialah kos penyelenggaraan yang rendah.
One advantage of this proposal is its low maintenance cost.
English also alternates healthy/health and good/advantage, but English word order can obscure the categorical shift. In Malay, choosing the derived noun makes the quality available as a clause participant. Do not use a heavier noun automatically when a direct adjective says exactly what the conversation needs.
Competition with neighboring nominalizers
Related affixes profile different parts of one conceptual scene. Compare kehilangan with penghilangan. Kehilangan presents a loss or the affected possessor's experience; penghilangan (formal/technical) presents the process or deliberate act of removing something. Likewise, kedinginan is coldness or an experienced cold state, whereas pendinginan (technical) is a cooling process and pendingin an appliance or cooling agent.
Syarikat itu menanggung kerugian akibat kehilangan data pelanggan.
The company suffered losses because of the loss of customer data.
Penghilangan maklumat peribadi daripada salinan awam itu dibuat sebelum dokumen diterbitkan.
The removal of personal information from the public copy was done before the document was published. (formal/technical)
Sistem pendinginan pelayan gagal pada tengah malam.
The server cooling system failed at midnight. (technical)
The contrast is one of construal, not a reversible formula. A writer chooses penghilangan when the removing activity matters, kehilangan when the missing result or sufferer's loss matters, and hilang when a plain clause is sufficient.
Lexicalized words do not equal the sum of their parts
Some derivatives have conventional senses that outrun a transparent paraphrase. Kerajaan is βgovernmentβ or βkingdom,β not merely βthe state of being a raja.β Keterangan can mean an explanation, information, testimony, or grammatical adjunct according to domain. Kebetulan means coincidence or βby chance,β not simply βcorrectnessβ from modern betul.
Kerajaan negeri akan mengumumkan keputusan itu esok.
The state government will announce the decision tomorrow. (formal/news)
Kebetulan saya berada di kawasan itu ketika dia menelefon.
By chance, I was in that area when she called.
These examples explain why a dictionary-listed derivative must not be treated as fully compositional. Knowing the base can help memory, but the derivative's collocations and grammatical category still require separate learning.
Formal packaging and conversational paraphrase
Abstract nouns are frequent in administration, journalism, policy, and academic prose because they package conditions as topics (formal/academic). Everyday speech often prefers a shorter adjective or clause (informal). Both choices can be natural; the difference is informational density, not correctness.
| Packaged wording | Conversational alternative |
|---|---|
| Tahap kesihatan penduduk bertambah baik. | Orang di sini makin sihat. |
| Kehilangan data itu menjejaskan operasi. | Data itu hilang, jadi kerja kami tergendala. |
| Kebaikan langkah tersebut perlu dinilai. | Kita kena tengok sama ada langkah itu bagus. |
| Kedinginan ruang itu mengganggu tumpuan. | Bilik itu terlalu sejuk; susah nak fokus. |
Laporan itu mendapati bahawa tahap kesihatan penduduk telah bertambah baik.
The report found that the population's health level had improved. (formal)
Orang di sini makin sihat sejak klinik baharu dibuka.
People here have been getting healthier since the new clinic opened. (informal)
Bilik ini terlalu sejuk; susah nak fokus.
This room is too cold; it's hard to concentrate. (informal)
In edited formal prose, kesihatan, kehilangan, and kebaikan are ordinary rather than pretentious. In casual conversation, repeated abstract packaging may sound bureaucratic. Match the discourse purpose.
Productivity has firm lexical limits
The pattern is productive enough that learners recognize families, but not free enough to license every imaginable base. A logically interpretable form may be rare, belong to a specialist field, carry an unexpected established meaning, or simply not be Malaysian usage. In particular, do not import kesehatan for standard Malaysian kesihatan or assume a familiar Indonesian derivative has the same frequency and collocations in Malaysia.
Common Mistakes
1. Giving every derivative the valency of kehilangan.
β Mereka kehujanan hujan lebat semasa menunggu teksi.
Incorrect β kehujanan is normally intransitive; hujan lebat is not its direct object.
β Mereka kehujanan semasa menunggu teksi.
They got caught in the rain while waiting for a taxi.
2. Using an affected-state noun where a process noun is intended.
β Jurutera memeriksa sistem kedinginan enjin.
Wrong lexical choice β a mechanical cooling system uses pendinginan, not experiential kedinginan.
β Jurutera memeriksa sistem pendinginan enjin.
The engineer inspected the engine cooling system. (technical)
3. Treating a lexicalized word as a literal composition.
β Kerajaan bermaksud sifat seorang raja sahaja.
Incorrect β kerajaan conventionally means a government or kingdom.
β Kerajaan mengumumkan dasar baharu itu semalam.
The government announced the new policy yesterday. (formal/news)
4. Importing neighboring-standard morphology.
β Kesehatan awam ialah tanggungjawab bersama.
Incorrect in standard Malaysian Malay β use kesihatan.
β Kesihatan awam ialah tanggungjawab bersama.
Public health is a shared responsibility. (formal)
5. Overusing abstract nouns in casual speech.
β Saya adalah dalam kedinginan kerana bilik ini.
Incorrect English-style frame β Malay does not use adalah dalam before kedinginan to mean 'I am cold'.
β Bilik ini terlalu sejuk; saya tak selesa.
This room is too cold; I'm uncomfortable. (informal)
The compact conversational version also places the physical source first and the speaker's reaction second. That information flow is usually more natural than forcing the experience into an abstract nominal frame.
Key Takeaways
- A ke-...-an derivative may be a noun, a domain classifier, or a predicate; check each family's construction.
- Predicate kehilangan can take a direct object, whereas kehujanan does not.
- Neighboring affixes change perspective: kehilangan is loss, penghilangan removal, and pendinginan a cooling process.
- Formal prose favors compact abstract packaging; conversation often prefers adjectives and plain clauses.
- Learn productive structure together with lexicalized meanings, collocations, and Malaysian-standard forms.
