memper-: Meanings and Derivational Network in Malaysian Malay

With a gradable adjective, Malaysian memper- commonly means “cause something to become more BASE”: memperbesar makes something bigger, memperpanjang makes it longer, and mempercepat makes it faster or sooner. This is a powerful generalization, but it is not a single English translation pasted onto every word.

This page maps the meanings and derivational network. Formation and spelling belong on the formation page; argument frames and register belong on the usage page. The semantic key is a productive scale-changing schema surrounded by lexical families whose readings must be learned.

A three-family meaning map

Family pathScale encoded by the baseResulting eventFull context
besar “big” → memperbesarsize, magnitude, or visual scalecause the object to become biggerJurutera memperbesar saluran air untuk menampung aliran tambahan.
panjang “long” → memperpanjangphysical length or durationcause the object to become longerPihak muzium memperpanjang tempoh pameran hingga bulan depan.
cepat “fast” → mempercepatspeed or time to completioncause the event to proceed faster or occur soonerAutomasi mempercepat pemprosesan tuntutan.

Jurutera memperbesar saluran air untuk menampung aliran tambahan.

The engineers enlarged the water channel to accommodate additional flow. (formal)

Pihak muzium memperpanjang tempoh pameran hingga bulan depan.

The museum extended the exhibition period until next month. (formal)

Automasi mempercepat pemprosesan tuntutan.

Automation speeds up the processing of claims. (formal)

In each clause, the subject supplies the cause, the object lies on the adjective's scale, and the event moves that object toward a higher degree. English variously uses enlarge, extend, and accelerate, but Malay makes their common semantic architecture visible.

Caused change versus simple description

An adjective describes a state: bilik itu besar “that room is big.” A memper- verb introduces a cause and a transition: mereka memperbesar bilik itu “they enlarge that room.” The prefix does not simply turn “big” into an English verb; it adds an external cause and leaves the final degree context-dependent.

Bilik mesyuarat itu besar, tetapi pihak hotel masih mahu memperbesarnya.

The meeting room is big, but the hotel still wants to enlarge it. (neutral)

Kerajaan memperluas liputan internet ke kawasan pedalaman.

The government is expanding internet coverage to rural areas. (formal)

The result need not be absolute. Memperbesar imej means increase its current display size; it does not entail that the image becomes objectively “big.” Similarly, memperkuat hujah strengthens an argument relative to its earlier state, not necessarily until it is unanswerable.

Data tambahan itu memperkuat hujah bahawa program tersebut berkesan.

The additional data strengthens the argument that the program is effective. (academic)

💡
Translate the change, not just the adjective. Memper- + adjective normally means “increase the object's degree on the BASE scale,” and the context decides the natural English verb.

Physical and abstract extensions

The same scale can be interpreted physically or abstractly. Memperbesar can enlarge a photograph, expand a facility, or magnify a problem's apparent importance. Memperpanjang can lengthen a cable or extend a deadline. Memperluas can widen a road or broaden access, knowledge, and cooperation.

Klik ikon itu untuk memperbesar gambar resit.

Click that icon to enlarge the image of the receipt. (neutral)

Perbalahan kecil itu hanya memperbesar jurang antara kedua-dua kumpulan.

That minor dispute only widened the gulf between the two groups. (formal, figurative)

Sambungan ini memperpanjang kabel sebanyak dua meter.

This extension lengthens the cable by two metres. (neutral)

Kursus tersebut membantu peserta memperluas pengetahuan tentang keselamatan siber.

The course helps participants broaden their knowledge of cybersecurity. (formal)

These extensions are not random metaphors. A physical scale supplies a structured abstract domain: a “larger” gap is harder to bridge, a “broader” body of knowledge covers more territory, and a “longer” period contains more time. Nevertheless, individual collocations are conventional. English deepen trust, for example, does not prove that every Malay noun combines naturally with memperdalam.

What mempercepat actually changes

With cepat, the object is often a process or event: mempercepat pemulihan “accelerate recovery,” mempercepat kelulusan “expedite approval.” The affected dimension may be greater speed or an earlier completion time. English splits these readings among speed up, accelerate, expedite, and bring forward.

Rawatan awal dapat mempercepat pemulihan pesakit.

Early treatment can speed up the patient's recovery. (formal)

Pasukan itu menambah kakitangan untuk mempercepat kelulusan permit.

The team added staff to expedite permit approval. (formal)

Do not infer that mempercepat makes a person generally “fast.” In its most typical careful uses, it changes the progress or timing of a process. A context involving a vehicle can concern its movement, but the selected object and situation determine the reading.

Polysemy comes from the base and its object

The prefix contributes caused increase, while the base and object determine which dimension counts. Tinggi can concern physical height, level, intensity, or quality; mempertinggi accordingly has several related readings. Jelas is not a simple physical scale, but memperjelas means make an account, distinction, or position clearer.

Rajah kedua memperjelas perbezaan antara kedua-dua kaedah.

The second diagram clarifies the difference between the two methods. (academic)

Program latihan itu bertujuan mempertinggi tahap profesionalisme kakitangan.

The training program aims to raise the staff's level of professionalism. (formal)

This is regular polysemy: one scale receives different contextual interpretations. It differs from a lexicalized word whose meaning cannot be computed from a gradable adjective.

Lexicalized readings outside the scale schema

Memperalat “exploit, use as a tool,” memperdaya “deceive,” and memperoleh “obtain” cannot all be translated as “make more BASE.” The nominal family may remain recognizable, but convention supplies the verb's meaning.

Majikan itu dituduh memperalat pekerja kontrak untuk mengelakkan tanggungjawab.

The employer was accused of exploiting contract workers to avoid responsibility. (formal)

Mangsa diperdaya supaya mendedahkan kata laluannya.

The victim was tricked into revealing their password. (formal passive)

Syarikat itu memperoleh lesen operasi pada bulan Mei.

The company obtained its operating licence in May. (formal)

For these words, the root family helps memory but does not calculate the definition. English speakers often search for one universal equivalent—make, increase, or cause—then force it onto every memper- verb. That works only for the transparent center of the network.

💡
Learn two layers: a productive “increase a gradable property” schema, plus whole lexical families. A dictionary-listed memper- word may belong to either layer or combine both.

Productivity has a boundary

Gradable properties make good candidates because their meanings naturally support “more.” Yet semantic plausibility is not proof of an established verb. Malaysian speakers may choose a different derivative or a phrase such as menjadikan X lebih ... “make X more ...”. Register and collocation also affect whether an attested word sounds natural in a particular clause.

The boundary is genuinely lexical. There is no logical test that predicts every acceptable adjective and every conventional abstract object. Use the schema to understand and remember verified words, then check an unfamiliar derivative and its examples in a Malaysian dictionary.

Common Mistakes

1. Assigning one fixed English verb to every form.

❌ Memperoleh bermaksud ‘menjadikan lebih oleh’.

Incorrect — memperoleh is lexicalized and means ‘obtain’.

✅ Siti memperoleh biasiswa untuk melanjutkan pelajaran.

Siti obtained a scholarship to continue her studies. (formal)

2. Reading a change verb as a simple state.

❌ Syarikat itu memperbesar.

Incomplete for the intended causative reading — memperbesar normally affects an object.

✅ Syarikat itu memperbesar ruang pamerannya.

The company enlarged its exhibition space. (neutral)

3. Assuming the object must become absolutely big, long, or fast.

❌ Memperbesar ikon bermaksud ikon itu mesti menjadi sangat besar.

Incorrect claim — the verb entails an increase relative to the earlier size.

✅ Saya memperbesar ikon itu sedikit sahaja.

I enlarged that icon only slightly. (neutral)

4. Inventing a derivative because an English paraphrase contains “make more.”

❌ Semua kata adjektif yang boleh didahului ‘lebih’ pasti menerima memper-.

Incorrect claim — the pattern remains lexically restricted.

✅ Bentuk yang belum saya kenal perlu disemak dalam kamus bahasa Melayu Malaysia.

A form I do not know needs to be checked in a Malaysian Malay dictionary. (neutral)

Key Takeaways

  • The productive center is “cause the object to increase on the base adjective's scale.”
  • Memperbesar, memperpanjang, and mempercepat select different scales and therefore different English translations.
  • Physical scales extend systematically into abstract domains, but collocations remain conventional.
  • Memperalat, memperdaya, and memperoleh illustrate lexicalized readings.
  • Use the schema to understand verified words; do not use it to manufacture every logically possible derivative.
