The shape memper-...-kan often contributes a causative or presentational relation, but no single English formula captures every established word. Mempertemukan brings participants into contact, memperdengarkan presents sound for an audience to hear, and mempersoalkan turns a proposition or practice into an issue for scrutiny. Their interpretations arise from conventional lexical families, not from unlimited stacking of productive pieces.
This page explains that meaning network. The formation page covers spelling and base preservation, while the usage page treats argument order and register. The goal here is to see both the transparent contribution of the base and the lexicalized choices that must be learned.
The three core paths
The following root-family diagram uses full clauses because a bare English gloss conceals which participants the verb relates:
| Family path | Conventional relation | Full sentence context |
|---|---|---|
| temu “meet” → bertemu “meet” → mempertemukan | an actor causes two participants to meet, face one another, or connect | Program itu mempertemukan pencari kerja dengan bakal majikan. |
| dengar “hear” → mendengar “hear” → memperdengarkan | an actor makes audio available so an audience can hear it | Penerbit memperdengarkan rakaman asal kepada wartawan. |
| soal “question; issue” → menyoal “question a person” → mempersoalkan | an actor makes a policy, claim, or quality into a matter for challenge or debate | Laporan itu mempersoalkan keberkesanan skim tersebut. |
The first two paths have recognizable causative structure: someone arranges a meeting, or someone causes material to be heard. The third is more lexicalized. Mempersoalkan does not ordinarily mean “cause someone to ask a question”; it means question, dispute, debate, or make an issue of its object.
Temu: from meeting to caused contact
With people, mempertemukan A dengan B means bring A together with B or introduce them. The actor may be a person, an event, or an institution. The verb can also describe bringing physical ends into contact, which extends the spatial core of temu.
Seorang rakan lama mempertemukan saya dengan bakal penyelia saya.
An old friend introduced me to my prospective supervisor.
Persidangan itu mempertemukan penyelidik dari seluruh Asia Tenggara.
The conference brings together researchers from across Southeast Asia. (academic)
Juruteknik mempertemukan kedua-dua hujung kabel sebelum memasang penyambung.
The technician brought the two ends of the cable together before fitting the connector.
English introduce emphasizes first social contact, while bring together can cover a reunion, organized discussion, or physical joining. Mempertemukan spans these readings because the stable semantic core is caused contact, not a particular English verb.
The causative relation involves at least two meeting participants even when grammar packages one of them in a dengan phrase. In mempertemukan saya dengan penyelia, saya and penyelia are the two parties brought into contact. The organizer is the causer.
Dengar: making material available to hearing
Memperdengarkan does not merely mean “make someone hear” by any means. Its established uses center on performing, playing, broadcasting, or presenting sound so others can hear it. The direct object is normally the audible material: a song, recording, recitation, voice, or complaint made public.
Penyanyi itu memperdengarkan lagu ciptaan terbaharunya buat kali pertama.
The singer performed her newest composition for an audience for the first time.
Pendakwa raya memperdengarkan rakaman panggilan itu di mahkamah.
The prosecutor played the recording of the call in court. (formal)
Stesen berkenaan akan memperdengarkan bacaan puisi setiap malam Jumaat.
That station will broadcast poetry recitations every Friday night. (formal)
An optional audience can follow kepada: memperdengarkan rakaman itu kepada juri. This differs from ordinary mendengar rakaman, where the subject is the hearer. Compare the event perspectives:
| Verb | Subject's role | Object |
|---|---|---|
| mendengar | hearer | sound or message heard |
| memperdengarkan | presenter or broadcaster | sound or message presented for hearing |
Saya mendengar rakaman itu melalui fon kepala.
I listened to that recording through headphones.
Peguam memperdengarkan rakaman itu kepada anak guamnya.
The lawyer played the recording for her client. (formal)
English alternates among play, perform, broadcast, air, and make heard. Malaysian memperdengarkan groups these around access to hearing, but context and the type of audible object determine the best translation.
Soal: turning something into an issue
Mempersoalkan selects a claim, policy, decision, quality, role, motive, or legitimacy and places it under question. This is not the same as menyoal seseorang, “question/interrogate someone,” nor as bertanya soalan, “ask a question.”
Pembangkang mempersoalkan alasan kerajaan menangguhkan sidang tersebut.
The opposition questioned the government's reason for postponing the sitting. (formal)
Para penyelidik mempersoalkan kesahan kaedah persampelan itu.
The researchers question the validity of that sampling method. (academic)
Saya bukan mempersoalkan kejujuran awak; saya cuma perlukan bukti tambahan.
I'm not questioning your honesty; I just need additional evidence.
The lexicalized sense ranges from neutral scrutiny to an implicit challenge. Tone and object choice matter. Mempersoalkan anda without an understood quality sounds less precise than mempersoalkan keputusan anda or menyoal anda. English question hides this difference because it can mean either interrogate a person or challenge a proposition.
Transparent and lexicalized readings
Mempertemukan is relatively transparent once bertemu is known. Memperdengarkan is also motivated, but its conventional presentation/broadcast range is narrower than the limitless English phrase “cause to hear.” Mempersoalkan is the most lexicalized: its issue-raising meaning cannot be computed simply by assigning independent glosses to each segment.
This continuum explains why morphological analysis helps comprehension without licensing invention. A reader who recognizes temu, dengar, and soal can form a good first hypothesis. A writer still checks the whole derivative and its conventional object types.
The -i contrast: mempersenjatai
The established weapons verb is mempersenjatai, not mempersenjatakan. Its object is the target supplied with weapons; the weapons themselves normally follow dengan.
Kumpulan itu mempersenjatai anggotanya dengan senapang automatik.
The group armed its members with automatic rifles. (formal)
This meaning resembles English equip, which may tempt learners to predict a -kan causative. Malaysian lexicalization chooses -i in this family. By contrast, memperdengarkan rakaman selects the presented sound as its object, and mempertemukan dua pihak selects meeting participants. The suffix is not a detachable English semantic label.
Apparent affix stacking therefore belongs to conventional valency patterns. It is not unlimited recursion in which speakers first create persenjata, then attach any desired suffix, then add an active prefix. The lexicon stores mempersenjatai and the other established families with their argument structures.
The same logic blocks a subtler error: treating every -kan form as a pure “make X happen” equivalent. Mempersoalkan keputusan itu can challenge or debate the decision even when no explicit question is asked aloud. Memperdengarkan keluhan can make a grievance publicly known through a medium, extending beyond literal acoustic playback. These conventional extensions remain tied to their families.
Rencana itu mempersoalkan andaian bahawa pertumbuhan sentiasa membawa kesejahteraan.
The article challenges the assumption that growth always brings prosperity. (academic)
Dokumentari tersebut memperdengarkan keluhan penduduk yang terjejas.
The documentary gives voice to the grievances of affected residents. (formal)
Common Mistakes
1. Treating mempersoalkan as ordinary information-seeking.
❌ Polis mempersoalkan saksi itu selama dua jam.
Wrong lexical choice for interrogating a person — use menyoal.
✅ Polis menyoal saksi itu selama dua jam.
The police questioned the witness for two hours.
2. Making the audience the direct object of memperdengarkan.
❌ Penerbit memperdengarkan wartawan rakaman itu.
Incorrect frame — the recording is presented; the audience follows kepada.
✅ Penerbit memperdengarkan rakaman itu kepada wartawan.
The producer played the recording for the journalists. (formal)
3. Reducing mempertemukan to first-time introduction only.
❌ Persidangan tidak boleh mempertemukan pakar yang sudah saling mengenali.
Incorrect claim — mempertemukan can bring together people who have met before.
✅ Persidangan itu mempertemukan semula pakar yang pernah bekerjasama.
The conference reunited experts who had worked together before. (formal)
4. Substituting -kan in the senjata family.
❌ Kerajaan dituduh mempersenjatakan kumpulan itu.
Incorrect — the established form is mempersenjatai.
✅ Kerajaan dituduh mempersenjatai kumpulan itu.
The government was accused of arming that group. (formal)
Key Takeaways
- Mempertemukan causes social or physical contact; memperdengarkan presents audible material; mempersoalkan makes something an issue for scrutiny.
- One English verb rarely covers each family's full range, and English question hides the contrast between menyoal and mempersoalkan.
- Transparent morphology aids interpretation but does not make the template freely productive.
- Learn object selection with meaning: participants with mempertemukan, audible material with memperdengarkan, and challenged propositions or qualities with mempersoalkan.
- The weapons family uses mempersenjatai, showing that conventional lexical valency outranks analogical suffix substitution.
