The few dictionary-established Malaysian memper-...-i verbs do not share one dependable English translation. Memperingati relates a community to a remembered person or event; mempersuami and memperisteri assign a marital role; mempersenjatai equips a target with weapons. The commonly cited memperkawani exposes an official source conflict rather than a secure extra member: the official grammar lists it, while DBP lexicographers reject it and give memperkawan or mengawani instead.
This page maps that semantic network. See the formation page for spelling and the severe limits on productivity, and the usage page for valency and register. The deeper lesson is that a transparent word can still have a lexicalized, family-specific meaning.
A small network, not one rule
The proposed network contains four dictionary-verified paths and one disputed textbook path:
| Root family | Conventional relation | Full sentence context |
|---|---|---|
| ingat → memperingati | commemorate an occasion or honor a person in remembrance | Rakyat berkumpul untuk memperingati pejuang yang terkorban. |
| kawan → memperkawani | grammar-book analysis disputed by DBP lexicographers; verified alternatives separate befriending from accompanying | Dia memperkawan jiran baharunya, manakala jururawat mengawani pesakit itu. |
| suami → mempersuami | take a man as one's husband | Dalam hikayat itu, sang puteri mempersuami seorang panglima. |
| isteri → memperisteri | take a woman as one's wife | Raja tersebut kemudian memperisteri puteri dari negeri seberang. |
| senjata → mempersenjatai | supply a person or group with weapons | Rangkaian itu didakwa mempersenjatai kumpulan pemberontak. |
The English verbs commemorate, accompany, marry, and arm do not reveal a common semantic operation. An abstract paraphrase such as “cause the object to have a relation to the base” is broad enough to cover them, but too vague to predict new words. It cannot tell you that mempersenjatai exists while memperlengkapi is not the neutral Malaysian equivalent of “equip.”
Ingat: remembrance and commemoration
Memperingati takes an anniversary, historical event, deceased person, or honored figure as its object and means “commemorate” or “honor in remembrance” (formal). The remembrance is typically made public through a ceremony, monument, exhibition, or other commemorative act.
Upacara itu diadakan untuk memperingati anggota bomba yang terkorban.
The ceremony was held to commemorate the firefighters who died. (formal)
Pameran ini memperingati seratus tahun kelahiran tokoh bahasa tersebut.
This exhibition commemorates the centenary of that language figure's birth. (formal)
Tugu itu dibina untuk memperingati jasa anggota keselamatan yang terkorban.
The monument was built to commemorate the service of the security personnel who died. (formal)
The commemorated entity is not “made mindful” in the same way that an armed unit is given weapons. The object frame and lexical sense differ. To “remind a person,” Malaysian Malay uses mengingatkan or memperingatkan, with the person as object and often a supaya clause.
Ibu mengingatkan saya supaya tidak memandu ketika mengantuk.
Mother reminded me not to drive while drowsy.
English remember is often intransitive or takes a content clause: “I remember that day.” Malay can likewise use ingat, but memperingati hari itu packages active commemoration. A ceremony memperingati an event; an individual simply teringat akan or ingat pada it in another construction. Translation alone hides that difference, just as English remind hides the required Malay contrast between memperingati and mengingatkan.
Kawan: an official source conflict
Tatabahasa Dewan names memperkawani as one of the few memper-...-i formations. DBP's dictionary division, however, has twice stated that the word is absent from Kamus Dewan and Kamus Pelajar. It distinguishes memperkawan “take or treat as a friend,” mengawani “accompany,” and memperkawankan “cause people to become friends.” This is a real conflict inside the official reference tradition; presenting memperkawani as an unqualified modern standard would conceal it.
Jururawat itu mengawani pesakit warga emas hingga keluarganya tiba.
The nurse kept the elderly patient company until the family arrived.
Dia mudah memperkawan orang yang baru dikenalinya.
He readily makes friends of people he has just met.
The alternatives reveal a semantic distinction that the disputed form blurs. Mengawani or menemani concerns companionship; memperkawan concerns taking someone as a friend; memperkawankan A dengan B causes two parties to become friends. In ordinary speech (informal), a speaker may also use teman or berkawan dengan. The best production advice is therefore not to assign a meaning to memperkawani, but to choose a dictionary-backed verb for the intended relation.
Suami and isteri: asymmetric marital-role verbs
The pair mempersuami and memperisteri lexicalizes a role assignment relative to the subject. A mempersuami B presents B as the husband taken by A; A memperisteri B presents B as the wife taken by A. In literary and historical prose (literary), the pair makes the gendered marital role explicit.
Srikandi itu memilih untuk mempersuami pemuda yang telah menyelamatkan negerinya.
The heroine chose to take as her husband the young man who had saved her kingdom. (literary)
Menurut hikayat tersebut, baginda memperisteri puteri dari kerajaan jiran.
According to the chronicle, His Majesty took a princess from a neighboring kingdom as his wife. (literary)
These verbs are not simply interchangeable translations of English marry, which does not encode whether the object becomes husband or wife. Contemporary conversation normally uses berkahwin dengan or menikahi. The old-looking English phrase “take someone as husband/wife” is semantically useful, but it also reflects the elevated narrative contexts where the Malay verbs are most likely to appear.
Senjata: equipping a target with weapons
Mempersenjatai has the clearest equipment reading: an actor supplies a direct-object target with weapons. The supplied material can appear in a dengan phrase. It does not mean merely “make more weapon-like,” nor does it mean “use something as a weapon.”
Negara itu dituduh mempersenjatai militia dengan peluru berpandu jarak dekat.
The country was accused of arming the militia with short-range missiles. (formal)
Pengawal tersebut tidak dipersenjatai ketika mengawal pintu masuk.
Those guards were not armed while guarding the entrance.
Syarikat keselamatan itu mempersenjatai kakitangannya dengan pistol berlesen.
The security company equips its staff with licensed pistols. (formal)
The direct object names the recipient of the weapons, not normally the weapons themselves. Compare English equip the unit with rifles: mempersenjatai unit itu dengan senapang, where unit itu is the goal and senapang follows dengan. This object alignment links mempersenjatai to the broader goal-oriented tendency of -i, but the exact word remains lexically licensed.
Transparent form, conventional meaning
The temptation to generalize is strongest with adjectives. If baik means “good,” memperbaiki seems to offer a neat “make better.” That improvement sense is widespread and is standard Indonesian, but prescribed Malaysian usage rejects it as redundant; use memperbaik or menambah baik for improvement and membaiki for repair. The dictionary's older memperbaiki means “do good to; treat properly” (literary, archaic), not a productive modern model.
Pihak sekolah akan memperbaik prosedur keselamatan sebelum penggal baharu bermula.
The school will improve its safety procedures before the new term begins. (formal)
Abang sedang membaiki basikal saya di halaman.
My older brother is repairing my bicycle in the yard.
Similarly, Malaysian melengkapi covers “complete, supplement, equip,” where Indonesian influence may tempt a learner toward memperlengkapi.
Data baharu itu melengkapi dapatan kajian terdahulu.
The new data complements the findings of the earlier study. (academic)
Neither correction follows from a universal English-to-affix equation. They are facts about Malaysian lexical selection. This is why semantic transparency and productivity must be kept separate: learners can see senjata inside mempersenjatai and still need a dictionary to know that the whole word exists.
Common Mistakes
1. Using memperingati for “remind a person.”
❌ Ibu memperingati saya supaya memandu dengan cermat.
Incorrect — memperingati means 'commemorate'; reminding a person uses mengingatkan or memperingatkan.
✅ Ibu mengingatkan saya supaya memandu dengan cermat.
Mother reminded me to drive carefully.
2. Making the weapons the direct object of mempersenjatai.
❌ Mereka mempersenjatai senapang kepada pengawal.
Incorrect argument mapping — the armed recipient should be the direct object.
✅ Mereka mempersenjatai pengawal dengan senapang.
They armed the guards with rifles.
3. Using improvement-sense memperbaiki as prescribed Malaysian.
❌ Kita perlu memperbaiki sistem ini.
Nonstandard in prescribed Malaysian usage for 'improve.'
✅ Kita perlu memperbaik sistem ini.
We need to improve this system.
4. Extending the pattern from senjata to lengkap.
❌ Lampiran itu memperlengkapi laporan.
Not accepted in prescribed Malaysian usage — use melengkapi.
✅ Lampiran itu melengkapi laporan.
The appendix completes the report. (formal)
Key Takeaways
- The dictionary-established memper-...-i verbs express commemoration, marital-role assignment, and arming; the social relation attributed to disputed memperkawani is expressed safely with memperkawan, mengawani, or memperkawankan.
- Their shared shape does not supply one reliable English gloss and does not license new derivatives.
- The object of mempersenjatai is the recipient of weapons; the object of mempersuami/memperisteri receives the named marital role.
- Use memperbaik/membaiki and melengkapi for the relevant modern Malaysian meanings, not tempting analogical overextensions.
- Learn each memper-...-i family together with its meaning and full sentence frame.
