memper-...-kan: Formation and Allomorphy in Malaysian Malay

The analytical template memper- + BASE + -kan appears in established Malaysian verbs such as mempertemukan, mempersoalkan, and memperdengarkan. The spelling rule is simple—write the real word solid—but the lexical rule is not: speakers cannot combine memper-, any root, and -kan recursively whenever the resulting meaning seems imaginable.

This page treats formation, surface attachment, and dictionary verification. The meaning page explains what established families mean, and the usage page handles their argument frames and register. Keeping those questions separate prevents a plausible segmentation from being mistaken for proof that a new word exists.

Canonical segmentation

The three required -kan families preserve their bases, while mempersenjatai shows a neighboring -i family that must not be remodeled with -kan.

In linguistic prose, hyphens mark the edges of memper-...-kan. In real text, mempertemukan is one orthographic word. Neither memper-temu-kan nor memper temu kan is correct ordinary spelling.

The base remains visible

Unlike the nasal allomorphy of meN-, memper- does not delete the initial t, s, or d of these bases. Compare temu → mempertemukan, not memperemukan; soal → mempersoalkan, not memperoalkan; and dengar → memperdengarkan, not memperengarkan.

The suffix likewise leaves the base-final segment visible. Soal retains l before kan, and dengar retains r. Temu ends in a vowel, so -kan attaches directly: temukan inside mempertemukan. There is no linking consonant and no hyphen.

Program mentor itu mempertemukan graduan baharu dengan pakar industri.

Root categories do not create free productivity

The three bases come from different lexical profiles. Temu is a bound or family base whose common relatives include bertemu, menemui, and pertemuan. Dengar is a verb base. Soal functions as a noun meaning “question, issue” and participates in several verb families. This variety shows that memper-...-kan is not restricted to one simple part of speech.

It does not show that every verb or noun accepts the template. A root category supplies only a possible starting point. The lexicon still decides whether Malaysian speakers have conventionalized the complete derivative. Mempersoalkan is established, whereas a mechanically invented form built on some other question-related noun may be comprehensible yet unacceptable.

There are also several structural histories hiding under the same surface outline. A learner may analyze mempertemukan as the causative relative of bertemu, while mempersoalkan has a conventional “make into an issue” relation to soal. Memperdengarkan belongs to the family of presenting audio so that others hear it. These are useful analyses, but they are not repeated applications of freely recursive prefixes and suffixes.

No one questions the need to help flood victims.

Why apparent stacking is deceptive

English speakers may imagine a derivation in independent steps: “add per- to make one word, add -kan to make it causative, then add meN- for active voice.” That historical or theoretical decomposition is not a production algorithm. The surface memper- is learned as part of a conventional verbal family, and the full memper-...-kan derivative must be attested.

This matters particularly when a nearby suffixal contrast exists. Malaysian dictionaries recognize mempersenjatai “arm, equip with weapons”; the direct-object target receives weapons. Mempersenjatakan is not created merely because -kan often has causative associations. The correct suffix is part of the lexical family.

Pasukan bantuan itu tidak dipersenjatai.

That aid unit was not armed.

A nearby valid suffix is evidence for a contrast, not permission to substitute suffixes. Learn senjata → mempersenjatai as a whole family.

Active and passive shapes

The active forms discussed here begin with memper-. Their third-person passive counterparts replace that active layer with diper-: dipertemukan, dipersoalkan, diperdengarkan. This alternation confirms that the remainder of the family is stable.

Commands and certain pronoun passives may expose pertemukan, persoalkan, or perdengarkan without the active mem- material, but that syntactic distribution belongs on the usage page. For formation, notice that the suffix and the remaining derivational material are still written solid.

How dictionaries expose the base

A Malaysian dictionary may nest the complete derivative under temu, soal, or dengar rather than give every surface word an independent headword. Search both the whole form and the plausible base. Then read the definition and example instead of stopping at a search hit: databases also contain questions, quotations, regional terms, and corrected errors.

The dictionary family provides three checks. First, it confirms the base spelling. Second, it confirms the complete derivative. Third, it reveals conventional senses that pure segmentation cannot predict. This is especially important for mempersoalkan, whose normal meaning is not simply “ask a question,” and memperdengarkan, which selects material presented for others to hear.

Surface similarity can hide a different analysis

Not every word beginning with the letters memper and ending with kan necessarily offers the same synchronic derivation. Speakers store whole verb families, and grammatical descriptions may disagree about how many intermediate layers to recognize. For learners, the operational facts remain stable: identify the dictionary base, confirm the complete word, and learn its passive counterpart and object frame.

For example, mempertemukan belongs to temu alongside bertemu and pertemuan. Mempersoalkan belongs to soal alongside menyoal and persoalan. These family relations are stronger evidence than simply circling the first six and last three letters. They also prevent false segmentation of a borrowed or lexicalized word that only happens to contain the same sequence.

Common Mistakes

1. Writing a morphological analysis as ordinary spelling.

❌ Pengurus itu akan memper-temu-kan kami.

Incorrect — the real derivative is written solid.

✅ Pengurus itu akan mempertemukan kami.

The manager will introduce us to each other.

2. Deleting the initial consonant of the base.

❌ Artikel itu memperoalkan dasar baharu.

Incorrect — soal keeps its initial s after memper-.

✅ Artikel itu mempersoalkan dasar baharu.

The article questions the new policy. (formal)

3. Substituting -kan for the lexical -i in the senjata family.

❌ Mereka mempersenjatakan pasukan itu.

Incorrect — the established Malaysian verb is mempersenjatai.

✅ Mereka mempersenjatai pasukan itu.

They armed that unit.

4. Treating the pattern as freely recursive.

❌ Setiap kata nama boleh menerima memper- dan -kan jika maksudnya dapat diteka.

Incorrect claim — transparent meaning does not guarantee an established derivative.

✅ Saya menyemak seluruh kata terbitan itu dalam kamus bahasa Melayu Malaysia.

I check the complete derivative in a Malaysian Malay dictionary.

Key Takeaways

  • Analyze memper- + base + -kan, but write mempertemukan, mempersoalkan, and memperdengarkan solid.
  • Preserve the base; the consonant deletion associated with meN- does not apply inside memper-.
  • Root categories vary, but lexical verification remains necessary.
  • Passive diper-...-kan preserves the family material after replacing the active layer.
  • Do not substitute suffixes by analogy: Malaysian has mempersenjatai, not mempersenjatakan.
