memper-: Valency, Lexicalization, and Register in Malaysian Malay

An established memper- verb is normally transitive: its subject causes a change, and its direct object undergoes that change. Memperbesar imej, memperpanjang tempoh, and mempercepat proses are natural because each noun phrase supplies an entity or event that can change on the base adjective's scale.

This page focuses on valency, competition, lexicalization, and register. See the formation page for spelling and the meaning page for the degree-change network. The practical principle is to learn a productive schema together with verified lexical families and their normal objects.

The central argument frame

The transparent pattern has three semantic roles:

CAUSER + memper-VERB + AFFECTED OBJECT

The causer may be a person, institution, tool, or circumstance. The object is the participant whose size, duration, speed, strength, breadth, depth, or clarity changes.

Verb phraseCauserAffected objectChanged dimension
memperbesar imejuser or softwareimagedisplayed size
memperpanjang tempohauthority or eventperiodduration
mempercepat prosesperson, tool, or measureprocessspeed or completion time

Pengguna boleh memperbesar imej dengan menyentuh skrin dua kali.

Users can enlarge the image by tapping the screen twice. (neutral)

Kementerian memperpanjang tempoh permohonan hingga 30 September.

The ministry extended the application period until 30 September. (formal)

Kaunter tambahan akan mempercepat proses pendaftaran.

Additional counters will speed up the registration process. (formal)

The object need not denote a physical thing. Tempoh, proses, kerjasama, hujah, and akses are common abstract objects because they support a conventional scale. English learners should not omit them merely because English sometimes uses an intransitive verb such as “the process accelerated.” The memper- clause presents an external cause acting on an object.

Active and passive perspectives

The active memper- form foregrounds the causer. The corresponding third-person passive uses diper-, retaining the base: memperbesar → diperbesar, memperpanjang → diperpanjang, mempercepat → dipercepat.

Pihak hotel akan memperbesar ruang makan pada hujung tahun.

The hotel will enlarge the dining area at the end of the year. (formal active)

Ruang makan akan diperbesar pada hujung tahun.

The dining area will be enlarged at the end of the year. (formal passive)

Tempoh rundingan telah diperpanjang selama dua minggu.

The negotiation period has been extended by two weeks. (formal passive)

Proses kelulusan dipercepat selepas sistem baharu diperkenalkan.

The approval process was expedited after the new system was introduced. (formal passive)

The passive is especially common in administrative and news prose (formal) because the changed object matters more than the decision-maker. An agent can be added with oleh, but it is often omitted when known or irrelevant: Tempoh itu diperpanjang oleh jawatankuasa.

💡
When the clause has no natural affected object, reconsider the verb. Transparent memper- + adjective generally changes something; it does not merely describe the subject's spontaneous change.

Natural noun-verb pairings

Valency tells you that a direct object is possible; collocation tells you which object sounds conventional. Memperpanjang tempoh, kontrak, landasan, and hayat are established combinations. Mempercepat proses, pemulihan, pertumbuhan, and kelulusan are natural in careful prose. Memperbesar imej, ruang, kapasiti, and jurang select physical or figurative size.

Penyelenggaraan berkala dapat memperpanjang hayat mesin itu.

Regular maintenance can extend the life of that machine. (formal)

Dasar baharu itu mungkin memperbesar jurang pendapatan.

That new policy may widen the income gap. (formal)

Bekalan tambahan membantu mempercepat pemulihan selepas banjir.

Additional supplies help speed up recovery after the flood. (formal)

English allows broad “make X more adjective” phrases, but Malay may prefer menjadikan X lebih ADJECTIVE when no compact derivative is conventional. The paraphrase is also useful when the changed property needs explicit emphasis: menjadikan arahan itu lebih jelas “make the instructions clearer.”

Competition with neighboring forms

Several nearby verbs overlap without being interchangeable. Memperbesar focuses on increasing size or magnitude. Membesarkan can also mean enlarge, but it has a major lexical reading “raise, bring up,” especially with a child. The object resolves the interpretation.

Mereka membesarkan tiga orang anak di Ipoh.

They raised three children in Ipoh. (neutral)

Juruteknik memperbesar paparan supaya angka itu mudah dibaca.

The technician enlarged the display so that the figures were easy to read. (neutral)

With panjang, careful administrative prose often uses memperpanjang tempoh. In conversation, speakers may use panjangkan tempoh as a direct request or a colloquial actor-voice simplification (informal). With cepat, formal writing favors mempercepat proses, while cepatkan proses is a natural concise directive (informal) or imperative.

Boleh panjangkan tempoh itu sampai minggu depan?

Could you extend that period until next week? (informal conversation)

Tolong cepatkan proses ini; pelanggan sudah lama menunggu.

Please speed this process up; the customer has been waiting a long time. (informal conversation)

These conversational paraphrases do not make memperpanjangkan or mempercepatkan standard careful alternatives. They use a different shape, the bare or colloquial BASE + -kan form. Keep competing constructions separate instead of blending their affixes.

Formal and conversational distribution

Transparent memper- verbs are not confined to bureaucracy, but many thrive in technical, academic, administrative, and news registers (formal/academic) because those settings discuss controlled changes to periods, capacity, access, quality, and procedures. In everyday conversation, a shorter verb, -kan imperative, or analytic phrase may sound lighter.

Pelaburan tersebut dijangka memperluas kapasiti pengeluaran kilang.

The investment is expected to expand the factory's production capacity. (formal)

Besarkan tulisan itu sikit; saya tak nampak.

Make that text a bit bigger; I can't see it. (informal conversation)

Register is not a truth-condition difference. Both sentences can describe caused size increase; they package it for different situations. A formal report should not casually drop the active prefix, while an urgent spoken instruction need not imitate an official memorandum.

Lexicalized families have their own valency

Outside the adjective schema, each verb selects its own frame. Memperoleh takes the thing obtained as object: memperoleh kelulusan. Memperalat takes the person, institution, account, or resource exploited as a tool. Memperdaya takes the deceived person, sometimes followed by a clause describing what the victim was induced to do.

Penyelidik itu memperoleh geran bagi projek tenaga suria.

The researcher obtained a grant for the solar-energy project. (formal)

Mereka memperalat nama pertubuhan itu untuk mengutip derma palsu.

They exploited the organization's name to collect fraudulent donations. (formal)

Pemanggil itu memperdaya warga emas tersebut supaya memindahkan wang.

The caller tricked the elderly person into transferring money. (neutral)

Treating these as fully compositional invites bad objects and false meanings. A dictionary entry confirms that a word exists; examples and definitions reveal which participants it selects. Learn memperoleh sesuatu, memperalat seseorang/sesuatu, and memperdaya seseorang as lexical frames.

💡
A sound learning unit is not just memperoleh = obtain, but memperoleh + result/permission/award. Store the verb with a normal object and its register.

Why free coinage fails

The adjective schema is productive but not unrestricted, and the nominal-looking families are even more selective. A form can be structurally transparent yet absent from Malaysian usage. Conversely, a listed word may have developed a specialized meaning that its parts no longer predict.

There is no honest universal rule that replaces lexical verification. Before using an unfamiliar derivative, check the whole form in a Malaysian dictionary, inspect its definition, and look for authentic object patterns. Indonesian familiarity or an English “make more” paraphrase is not enough to establish neutral Malaysian usage.

Common Mistakes

1. Leaving out the affected object in the transparent transitive frame.

❌ Sistem baharu itu mempercepat.

Incomplete for the intended causative meaning — state what the system speeds up.

✅ Sistem baharu itu mempercepat proses semakan.

The new system speeds up the review process. (formal)

2. Mixing simple memper- with a neighboring -kan form.

❌ Jawatankuasa memperpanjangkan tempoh rayuan.

Nonstandard in prescribed Malaysian usage — do not add redundant -kan here.

✅ Jawatankuasa memperpanjang tempoh rayuan.

The committee extended the appeal period. (formal)

3. Using a formal actor-voice form as though it were a direct casual command.

❌ Memperbesar tulisan ini!

Unnatural as an ordinary direct command — use the command form besarkan.

✅ Besarkan tulisan ini, ya.

Make this text bigger, please. (informal conversation)

4. Assuming every dictionary form has a compositional degree reading.

❌ Memperoleh bermaksud meningkatkan sifat ‘oleh’.

Incorrect — memperoleh is lexicalized as ‘obtain’.

✅ Kami memperoleh kebenaran untuk memasuki kawasan itu.

We obtained permission to enter that area. (formal)

Key Takeaways

  • Transparent memper- verbs take an affected object whose degree changes.
  • Active memper- contrasts with passive diper-, especially in formal administrative prose.
  • Learn natural pairings such as memperpanjang tempoh and mempercepat proses.
  • Conversational besarkan/panjangkan/cepatkan are neighboring forms, not permission to stack -kan onto memper-.
  • Lexical verbs such as memperoleh, memperalat, and memperdaya require their own meanings and object frames.
