Belajar “learn/study” is an irregular bel- form historically and synchronically tied to the root ajar. It anchors a large pedagogical family: formal transitive mempelajari, passive dipelajari, person noun pelajar, lesson noun pelajaran, process noun pembelajaran, and pengajaran “teaching/instruction” or “lesson to be learned.”
The forms share a family resemblance but are not freely interchangeable. Belajar bahasa presents the learner's activity, mempelajari sejarah treats history as an object of sustained study, and proses pembelajaran names learning as a process. General affix rules belong to Word Formation and valency; this page concentrates on established meanings and frames.

No person or tense conjugation
| Context | Malay pattern | Meaning source |
|---|---|---|
| present habit | Saya belajar setiap malam. | setiap malam |
| third-person past | Dia belajar semalam. | semalam |
| plural progressive | Mereka sedang belajar. | sedang |
| future plan | Kami akan belajar esok. | akan + esok |
Saya belajar bahasa Melayu selama satu jam setiap malam.
I study Malay for one hour every night.
Mereka sedang belajar di perpustakaan kerana peperiksaan bermula minggu depan.
They are studying in the library because examinations begin next week.
English changes study to studies/studied and uses learned. Malay belajar does not acquire agreement or tense endings. Aspect and time markers remain separate: sudah belajar, sedang belajar, akan belajar.
belajar: the learner's activity
Belajar can occur without an object when the activity is understood, directly before a field or skill, with a place phrase, or with a source introduced by daripada.
Adik sedang belajar di biliknya, jadi jangan pasang televisyen terlalu kuat.
My younger sibling is studying in their room, so don't turn the television up too loudly.
Kami belajar bahasa Jepun melalui kelas dalam talian.
We study Japanese through online classes.
Dia belajar memasak daripada neneknya semasa cuti sekolah.
She learned to cook from her grandmother during the school holidays.
Pasukan itu belajar daripada kesilapan mereka dalam perlawanan pertama.
The team learned from their mistakes in the first match.
Belajar memasak means learn the activity of cooking; no infinitive marker equivalent to English to is required. Belajar daripada kesilapan is an established abstract collocation. A direct subject matter after belajar is natural in ordinary educational contexts: belajar bahasa, belajar matematik.
In everyday Malaysian speech, belajar is much more frequent than a formal transitive derivative for routine study. It is not a bare infinitive: the whole lexical verb includes irregular bel-.
mempelajari: a defined object of study
Mempelajari is a transitive verb that makes the subject matter a clear direct object. It is common in (formal), (academic), and carefully written contexts, especially for systematic study, investigation, or mastery.
Pelajar tahun pertama mempelajari sejarah Malaysia moden dalam kursus tersebut.
First-year students study modern Malaysian history in that course.
Pasukan penyelidik mempelajari kesan perubahan cuaca terhadap hasil padi.
The research team studies the effects of weather changes on rice yields. (academic)
Sebelum menggunakan mesin itu, pekerja perlu mempelajari prosedur keselamatan yang baharu.
Before using that machine, workers need to learn the new safety procedures.
The contrast with belajar is partly register and partly construal. Belajar sejarah is ordinary study activity. Mempelajari sejarah presents history as a bounded object examined or learned. It does not automatically mean the learning succeeded completely.
Because mempelajari already takes a direct object, mempelajari tentang sejarah is usually wordier and less well formed than mempelajari sejarah. Use belajar tentang sejarah when the looser “learn about” construction is intended.
dipelajari: the subject matter as passive subject
Passive dipelajari centers what is studied or learned.
Topik ini dipelajari oleh semua pelajar pada semester pertama.
This topic is studied by all students in the first semester.
Kemahiran tersebut boleh dipelajari melalui latihan yang konsisten.
That skill can be learned through consistent practice.
Write the passive prefix solid: dipelajari. A following place phrase keeps locative di separate: dipelajari di sekolah. This contrast makes Topik itu dipelajari di universiti visually regular once prefix and preposition are distinguished.
The passive does not encode past time. Telah dipelajari (formal) marks prior completion; akan dipelajari marks a prospective lesson; bare dipelajari receives time from context.
pelajar: the learner as a social role
Pelajar normally means a student or pupil in an educational setting.
Setiap pelajar perlu membawa kad pengenalan semasa peperiksaan.
Every student must bring identification during the examination.
Malaysian institutions distinguish role labels such as murid for school pupils in many official contexts and pelajar as a broader student/learner term. Mahasiswa/mahasiswi may specifically identify university students in formal usage, though inclusive pelajar universiti is widely useful.
Do not choose pelajar merely for anyone who learns once. A person learning a recipe from a friend is simply orang yang belajar memasak unless a stable learner or student role is relevant.
pelajaran: lesson, subject, and lesson learned
Pelajaran can name instructional content, a school lesson, or a lesson drawn from experience. The compound mata pelajaran means a school subject.
Mata pelajaran kegemarannya ialah sains dan geografi.
Her favorite school subjects are science and geography.
Kemalangan kecil itu menjadi pelajaran penting bagi semua pekerja.
That minor accident became an important lesson for all the workers.
The second meaning is evaluative knowledge gained from an event, not a scheduled class. Common collocations include mengulang kaji pelajaran, jadual pelajaran, and mengambil pelajaran/pengajaran daripada pengalaman.
pembelajaran: the learning process
Pembelajaran names learning as a process, system, or designed educational activity. It is frequent in educational policy, teacher training, and (academic) research.
Proses pembelajaran menjadi lebih berkesan apabila pelajar menerima maklum balas yang khusus.
The learning process becomes more effective when students receive specific feedback. (academic)
Sekolah itu menyediakan bahan pembelajaran digital untuk kegunaan di rumah.
The school provides digital learning materials for use at home.
In ordinary conversation, Saya buat pembelajaran malam ini is not the natural way to say “I'm studying tonight”; use Saya belajar malam ini. The process noun belongs where an actual process, approach, resource, or system is being named.
One educational event from learner and teacher perspectives
Belajar and mengajar can describe the same lesson from opposite participant perspectives. The learner is subject of belajar; the teacher is subject of mengajar, and the learner or subject matter may follow it.
Murid-murid belajar membaca, manakala guru mereka mengajar sebutan dan kefahaman.
The pupils learn to read, while their teacher teaches pronunciation and comprehension.
Cikgu Salmah mengajar matematik kepada pelajar tingkatan dua.
Teacher Salmah teaches mathematics to Form Two students.
The contrast explains the nouns. Pembelajaran matematik views the learning process, while pengajaran matematik views teaching and instructional practice. Educational writing often needs both in one sentence.
Pengajaran yang jelas dapat menyokong pembelajaran kendiri di luar bilik darjah.
Clear instruction can support self-directed learning outside the classroom. (academic)
Do not select between the two nouns merely from English education. Identify whose process—learner or teacher—is being discussed.
pengajaran: teaching and the lesson drawn
Pengajaran belongs to the teaching side of ajar. It can name instruction/teaching or the lesson and wisdom derived from an event.
Kaedah pengajaran itu menggabungkan perbincangan, latihan praktikal dan maklum balas individu.
That teaching method combines discussion, practical exercises, and individual feedback. (academic)
Kita perlu mengambil pengajaran daripada kegagalan projek tersebut.
We need to learn a lesson from the failure of that project.
The second is an established lexical use: mengambil pengajaran means draw a lesson. It overlaps with mengambil pelajaran, but pengajaran often sounds more like a moral, warning, or general principle extracted from experience.
Common Mistakes
1. Replacing irregular belajar with a generated form
❌ Mereka berajar bahasa Melayu setiap petang.
Incorrect—the established irregular form is belajar.
✅ Mereka belajar bahasa Melayu bersama-sama setiap petang.
They study Malay together every afternoon.
2. Using ajar for the learner's activity
❌ Saya ajar di perpustakaan untuk peperiksaan esok.
Incorrect for ‘I study’—ajar belongs to teaching.
✅ Saya belajar di perpustakaan untuk peperiksaan esok.
I'm studying in the library for tomorrow's examination.
3. Adding tentang after transitive mempelajari
❌ Pelajar itu mempelajari tentang sejarah negeri tersebut.
Wordy and nonstandard in the intended direct-object construction.
✅ Pelajar itu mempelajari sejarah negeri tersebut melalui dokumen lama.
The student studies the history of that state through old documents.
4. Using pembelajaran for a person
❌ Pembelajaran baharu itu bertanya banyak soalan di dalam kelas.
Incorrect noun—pembelajaran is the learning process, not a student.
✅ Pelajar baharu itu bertanya banyak soalan di dalam kelas.
The new student asks many questions in class.
5. Separating passive di-
❌ Kemahiran itu di pelajari melalui latihan harian.
Incorrect spelling—the passive prefix is attached.
✅ Kemahiran itu dipelajari melalui latihan harian yang konsisten.
That skill is learned through consistent daily practice.
Key Takeaways
Memorize irregular belajar as the ordinary learner-centered verb and use mempelajari + object for systematic or formal study. Dipelajari is its passive. Pelajar names a student, pelajaran a lesson or school subject, pembelajaran the learning process, and pengajaran teaching or a lesson drawn from experience. The family is rich because its members have conventional educational meanings; none is a tense or person form of another.
