Malay additive markers do not all mean a generic “and.” Dan coordinates units within a structure, juga adds a parallel participant or property, selain itu connects a new sentence-level point, and bahkan adds something higher or more surprising on a scale. Formal connectors such as di samping itu and tambahan pula can organize larger stretches of exposition.
The choice depends on two questions: at what grammatical level is information being added, and does the added item merely sit alongside the first or exceed an expectation? Treating all additive expressions as interchangeable makes a paragraph repetitive and can erase the writer's intended emphasis.
dan joins units at the same structural level
Dan is the neutral coordinator for two noun phrases, predicates, or clauses that form one larger unit. It does not by itself tell the reader that the second item is a new argument or a surprising escalation.
Pusat itu menyediakan ruang belajar dan akses Internet kepada penduduk setempat.
The center provides study space and Internet access to local residents.
Aina menyemak angka tersebut dan Hakim menyediakan graf untuk laporan akhir.
Aina checked the figures, and Hakim prepared the graphs for the final report.
In the first example, two noun phrases fill the same object role. In the second, two clauses form one coordinated sentence. A comma before dan can help when the clauses are long or have separate subjects, but Malay does not insert a comma mechanically before every dan.
At paragraph level, repeatedly beginning sentences with Dan often reflects English transfer. It is possible for deliberate rhetorical continuation, especially in narrative, but ordinary expository Malay normally uses a more specific relation or combines the units.
juga adds a parallel constituent or proposition
Juga means “also/too” and normally stands before the predicate or constituent whose inclusion is asserted. It presupposes a relevant parallel: someone else did the same thing, or the same participant has another property or action.
Farah menghadiri bengkel itu, dan dua orang rakannya juga hadir.
Farah attended the workshop, and two of her friends attended too.
Perkhidmatan tersebut cepat dan juga mudah digunakan oleh warga emas.
The service is fast and also easy for older people to use.
Kajian ini juga mempertimbangkan pengalaman pengguna di kawasan luar bandar.
This study also considers the experience of users in rural areas. (academic)
In rakannya juga hadir, the friends are added to an established set of attendees. In juga mempertimbangkan, a further research action is added to what the study already does. Context and prosodic stress identify the strongest focus, but the marker must remain close enough to its scope to avoid ambiguity.
Postposed juga has discourse and interpersonal uses such as reluctant agreement or “after all” in some contexts. Those pragmatic particle meanings are not the additive system described here. For a clear neutral “also,” place juga before the relevant predicate or focused material.
selain itu adds a new sentence-level point
Selain itu means “besides that/in addition.” It refers back to the preceding point and introduces another proposition at the same argumentative level. At the start of a sentence, it is normally followed by a comma.
Bas elektrik mengurangkan pencemaran udara di pusat bandar. Selain itu, bunyinya lebih senyap daripada bas diesel.
Electric buses reduce air pollution in the city center. In addition, they are quieter than diesel buses.
Calon perlu mempunyai pengalaman mengurus projek. Selain itu, mereka mesti fasih berbahasa Melayu dan Inggeris.
Candidates need experience managing projects. In addition, they must be fluent in Malay and English. (formal)
The second sentence is not simply another predicate inside the first clause. It supplies an additional independent consideration. This is why selain itu is useful for paragraph organization but heavy if inserted between two short noun phrases.
Do not confuse the full connector with constituent-level selain “apart from/besides.” Selain jururawat, dua orang doktor turut hadir means “Besides the nurses, two doctors also attended.” The demonstrative itu in selain itu packages the previous discourse as “that.”
bahkan marks scalar escalation
Bahkan adds an item that is stronger, less expected, or farther along a scale than the preceding item. Depending on context, English translates it as “even,” “indeed,” or “what is more.” It is common in careful and (formal) exposition, speeches, and emphatic narration.
Banjir itu merosakkan perabot, bahkan memusnahkan dokumen penting keluarga tersebut.
The flood damaged the furniture and even destroyed the family's important documents.
Cadangan itu diterima oleh kebanyakan ahli, bahkan pengkritik awalnya turut menyokongnya.
The proposal was accepted by most members; even its initial critics supported it.
The destruction is more serious than damage, and support from previous critics is less expected than support from ordinary members. Without such a scale, bahkan sounds inflated. A merely parallel fact belongs with juga, dan, or selain itu.
Malah can also mark strengthening or correction in Malaysian Malay. Its exact discourse use depends on context; bahkan is a clear choice when an expository writer intends scalar “even.”
Formal furthermore-style choices
Di samping itu and tambahan pula both introduce additional support. Di samping itu is neutral-formal and common in reports; tambahan pula often presents a reinforcing consideration and may sound more rhetorical.
Bangunan itu berhampiran dengan stesen. Di samping itu, semua pintu masuknya boleh digunakan oleh pengguna kerusi roda.
The building is near the station. In addition, all its entrances are accessible to wheelchair users. (formal)
Kos pembaikan terlalu tinggi. Tambahan pula, alat ganti model tersebut tidak lagi dikeluarkan.
The repair cost is too high. Furthermore, spare parts for that model are no longer produced. (formal)
These multiword connectors remain separate: di samping itu, tambahan pula, selain itu. Capitalize them only when they begin a sentence, and normally follow a sentence-initial connector with a comma.
Revising one additive paragraph
An unedited paragraph may repeat one connector and conceal the different relations:
❌ Perpustakaan itu menyediakan komputer. Selain itu, pencetak dan pengimbas. Selain itu, petugas membantu pengguna. Selain itu, petugas sanggup menerangkan setiap langkah beberapa kali.
Poorly organized—the first addition is only a noun phrase, and the final point is a scalar escalation rather than another flat sentence addition.
A revision assigns each marker a distinct job:
✅ Perpustakaan itu menyediakan komputer, pencetak dan pengimbas. Petugasnya juga membantu pengguna mencari bahan digital. Selain itu, perpustakaan tersebut menawarkan bengkel percuma setiap bulan. Petugasnya bahkan sanggup menerangkan setiap langkah beberapa kali kepada pengguna baharu.
The library provides computers, printers, and scanners. Its staff also help users find digital materials. In addition, the library offers free workshops every month. The staff are even willing to explain every step several times to new users.
Dan coordinates equipment, juga adds a parallel service by the staff, selain itu advances a new sentence-level benefit, and bahkan presents exceptional patience as the strongest point. Good cohesion comes from matching relation and level, not from maximizing connector variety.

turut and layered addition
Turut is another standard additive meaning “also/take part as well.” It is particularly common in news, formal reports, and statements that add a participant or contributing action. It often sounds more formal than conversational juga.
Tiga pertubuhan belia turut menyertai operasi membersihkan pantai tersebut.
Three youth organizations also took part in the beach-cleaning operation. (news/formal)
Laporan itu menilai kos pelaksanaan dan turut membincangkan kesannya terhadap pekerja sambilan.
The report assesses implementation costs and also discusses its effects on part-time workers. (formal)
Do not automatically stack turut juga. The combination occurs for emphasis, but one marker normally expresses simple parallel inclusion clearly enough. Choose turut when participation or contribution is foregrounded and juga as the broad neutral additive.
Different additive levels can occur in one sentence without being grammatically redundant. Selain itu, kajian ini juga menilai kos uses selain itu to connect the entire new sentence to the preceding argument, while juga adds evaluating cost to other actions performed by the study. Still, if the parallel action is already obvious, the leaner Selain itu, kajian ini menilai kos is usually better. Cohesion should expose structure, not count how many additive words can fit in one clause.
Selain itu, kajian ini juga menilai kesan perubahan jadual terhadap ibu bapa yang bekerja.
In addition, the study also evaluates the effects of schedule changes on working parents. (both markers have distinct scope)
Common Mistakes
1. Using selain itu between two nouns
❌ Kami membeli kertas selain itu dakwat pencetak.
Incorrect level—selain itu is a discourse connector, not a noun-phrase coordinator here.
✅ Kami membeli kertas dan dakwat pencetak untuk pejabat.
We bought paper and printer ink for the office.
2. Using bahkan without a stronger or surprising item
❌ Bilik itu mempunyai dua meja, bahkan tiga kerusi.
Misleading—three chairs are not inherently a stronger or surprising addition to two tables.
✅ Bilik itu mempunyai dua meja dan tiga kerusi.
The room has two tables and three chairs.
3. Repeating dan as a paragraph connector
❌ Kadar kehadiran meningkat. Dan, keputusan peperiksaan turut bertambah baik.
Awkward expository punctuation and relation—the second sentence adds an independent finding.
✅ Kadar kehadiran meningkat. Selain itu, keputusan peperiksaan turut bertambah baik.
Attendance increased. In addition, examination results improved.
4. Moving juga away from its intended scope
❌ Juga Nadia menyediakan rumusan mesyuarat itu.
Unnatural neutral order for ‘Nadia also prepared the summary.’
✅ Nadia juga menyediakan rumusan mesyuarat itu untuk semua ahli.
Nadia also prepared a summary of the meeting for all members.
5. Omitting punctuation after a multiword connector
❌ Di samping itu kos penghantaran ditanggung oleh pembeli.
Poor careful punctuation—a sentence-initial connector is followed by a comma.
✅ Di samping itu, kos penghantaran ditanggung oleh pembeli.
In addition, delivery costs are borne by the buyer. (formal)
