A closing marker tells readers what kind of ending they have reached. Singkatnya compresses what has already been said, kesimpulannya draws the discussion together, dengan demikian presents an inference or consequence, and pada akhirnya reaches the final stage of a process or story. English often translates several of them as in short, thus, or in the end, but their discourse jobs are different.
The most useful distinction is between summary and result. A summary restates earlier content in reduced form. A conclusion interprets that content. A consequence follows logically or causally from it. A narrative resolution tells what eventually happened. Choosing the marker first forces the writer to decide which relation is actually present.
Singkatnya: compress the preceding account
Singkatnya means “in short/briefly.” It announces a compact restatement rather than a new proof or event. At sentence start, capitalize it and follow it with a comma (neutral/formal).
Kos penyelenggaraan meningkat, alat ganti sukar diperoleh dan masa pembaikan semakin panjang. Singkatnya, sistem lama itu tidak lagi berdaya maju.
Maintenance costs are rising, spare parts are hard to obtain, and repair times are getting longer. In short, the old system is no longer viable. (formal)
Singkatnya, kita kekurangan masa, kakitangan dan ruang untuk melaksanakan semua cadangan serentak.
In short, we lack the time, staff, and space to implement all the proposals at once.
The shorter statement must genuinely cover the earlier details. Ringkasnya and secara ringkas are also common Malaysian alternatives. Singkatnya is standard, but repeating it at the end of every paragraph makes the prose mechanical.
Kesimpulannya: state the conclusion
Kesimpulannya means “in conclusion/the conclusion is.” It is appropriate when an essay, report, or discussion has supplied enough evidence for a final synthesis (formal/academic).
Kesimpulannya, peluasan waktu operasi hanya wajar dilaksanakan jika bilangan kakitangan dan permintaan pengguna dinilai bersama.
In conclusion, operating hours should be extended only if staffing levels and user demand are evaluated together. (academic)
Dapatan daripada ketiga-tiga daerah menunjukkan pola yang sama. Kesimpulannya, jarak perjalanan merupakan halangan yang konsisten terhadap kehadiran.
Findings from all three districts show the same pattern. In conclusion, travel distance is a consistent barrier to attendance. (academic)
The conclusion goes beyond shortening a list: it states what the evidence warrants. The noun-like form points back to the text's conclusion, so it should not appear before analysis has actually been presented.
Sebagai kesimpulan, is a transparent alternative (formal). Secara keseluruhannya, means “overall” and is useful for a balanced general assessment that may still acknowledge exceptions.
Dengan demikian: infer a result
Dengan demikian means “thus/in this way/accordingly.” It links preceding facts or reasoning to a consequence or inference (formal). It does not merely announce that the writer is stopping.
Semua calon mesti menyerahkan dokumen yang sama dan dinilai berdasarkan kriteria yang seragam. Dengan demikian, proses pemilihan dapat dijalankan dengan lebih telus.
All candidates must submit the same documents and be assessed using uniform criteria. Thus, the selection process can be conducted more transparently. (formal)
Sampel kajian hanya melibatkan pekerja bandar. Dengan demikian, dapatan ini tidak boleh digeneralisasikan terus kepada penduduk luar bandar.
The study sample includes only urban workers. Accordingly, these findings cannot be generalized directly to rural residents. (academic)
The second sentence is a logical consequence of sampling limits. Replacing dengan demikian with singkatnya would wrongly classify the limitation as a paraphrase. Replacing it with kesimpulannya might be possible at the end of a larger argument, but would highlight final synthesis rather than the local inferential step.
See Cause and Consequence in Discourse for the contrast with akibatnya and oleh sebab itu.
Pada akhirnya: reach the eventual endpoint
Pada akhirnya means “in the end/ultimately.” It looks across a process, conflict, delay, or chain of events and identifies the final outcome (neutral/formal).
Mereka mencuba tiga laluan, menunggu hujan reda dan meminta bantuan penduduk kampung. Pada akhirnya, rombongan itu tiba di pusat pemindahan sebelum malam.
They tried three routes, waited for the rain to ease, and asked villagers for help. In the end, the group reached the evacuation centre before nightfall. (narrative)
Rundingan itu berlarutan selama enam bulan. Pada akhirnya, kedua-dua pihak bersetuju untuk berkongsi kos pembaikan.
The negotiations continued for six months. Ultimately, both parties agreed to share the repair costs.
The marker belongs to a timeline. It can close an argument only when the writer means “after all stages or considerations,” not merely “this is my conclusion.” Academic English in conclusion should therefore not be translated automatically as pada akhirnya.
Compare akhirnya without pada. It often functions as an event-sequence adverb meaning “finally”: Selepas dua kali mencuba, akhirnya pintu itu terbuka. Pada akhirnya is a fuller discourse frame that surveys the path to the endpoint.
Four endings compared
| Marker | Discourse job | Question answered | Typical register |
|---|---|---|---|
| singkatnya | summary | How can the preceding details be compressed? | neutral/formal |
| kesimpulannya | final synthesis | What does the discussion support? | formal/academic |
| dengan demikian | inference or consequence | What follows from the preceding facts? | formal |
| pada akhirnya | eventual outcome | What happened after the process unfolded? | neutral/formal |
Markers may occur near one another only when their functions genuinely differ. A report might infer a recommendation with dengan demikian, then later use kesimpulannya to synthesize the whole report. Stacking Kesimpulannya, dengan demikian, singkatnya... does not make one sentence more conclusive.
An essay ending
The final paragraph of an essay should retrieve the question, synthesize the main evidence, and state a proportionate implication. It should not introduce a major new dataset.
Kajian ini menunjukkan bahawa kekerapan bas, kos tambang dan jarak ke hentian sama-sama mempengaruhi penggunaan pengangkutan awam. Kesimpulannya, peningkatan jumlah penumpang memerlukan pembaikan perkhidmatan secara menyeluruh, bukan pengurangan tambang semata-mata.
This study shows that bus frequency, fares, and distance to stops all influence public-transport use. In conclusion, increasing passenger numbers requires comprehensive service improvements, not fare reductions alone. (academic essay ending)
The second sentence synthesizes three findings into one qualified claim. Kesimpulannya is justified because the paragraph closes an analysis, while pada akhirnya would misleadingly suggest a chronological story.
A meeting recap
A recap reports what participants decided, what remains unresolved, and what happens next. Secara ringkas or singkatnya can compress several decisions; a result marker can then introduce the action they require.
Singkatnya, jawatankuasa bersetuju menangguhkan pelancaran, menambah satu sesi latihan dan mendapatkan anggaran kos baharu. Dengan demikian, urus setia perlu mengedarkan jadual yang disemak sebelum hari Jumaat.
In short, the committee agreed to postpone the launch, add one training session, and obtain a new cost estimate. Accordingly, the secretariat must circulate the revised schedule before Friday. (meeting recap)
The first marker summarizes decisions; the second draws an operational consequence. Using the same marker twice would hide that change in discourse relation.
A narrative resolution
A narrative ending closes the event chain and may then state its wider meaning.
Pada akhirnya, keluarga itu menemui kucing mereka di bawah rumah jiran. Ringkasnya, bunyi yang mereka dengar sepanjang malam bukan pencuri, tetapi loceng pada leher kucing tersebut.
In the end, the family found their cat under the neighbour's house. In short, the sound they had heard all night was not a thief but the bell on the cat's collar. (narrative resolution and recap)
Pada akhirnya resolves the search; Ringkasnya recasts the mystery. The two are not synonyms even though both occur at the end.
Punctuation and paragraph placement
At sentence start, write Singkatnya, Kesimpulannya, Dengan demikian, Pada akhirnya, with a capital letter and following comma. Within a sentence, the expression may be parenthetical and require paired commas, but sentence-initial placement is clearest for learners. Multiword dengan demikian and pada akhirnya remain separate; kesimpulannya and singkatnya are written solid because attached -nya is part of the form.
Use a marker at the point of transition, usually the start of the closing sentence or paragraph. A heading such as Kesimpulan may already announce the final section, so repeating Kesimpulannya in its first sentence is optional.
Common Mistakes
1. Using pada akhirnya for every academic conclusion
❌ Pada akhirnya, data ini membuktikan bahawa jarak ialah faktor utama.
Misleading in a static academic synthesis—pada akhirnya suggests an eventual timeline rather than a conclusion from evidence.
✅ Kesimpulannya, data ini menunjukkan bahawa jarak ialah faktor utama dalam sampel tersebut.
In conclusion, the data show that distance is the main factor in that sample. (academic)
2. Calling a new claim a summary
❌ Singkatnya, kerajaan perlu membina sebuah lapangan terbang baharu.
Unsupported as a summary if no earlier discussion established that recommendation.
✅ Singkatnya, ketiga-tiga pilihan memerlukan kos penyelenggaraan yang lebih tinggi daripada anggaran awal.
In short, all three options require higher maintenance costs than initially estimated.
3. Using dengan demikian without an inference
❌ Pejabat itu mempunyai tiga tingkat. Dengan demikian, pengurusnya bernama Salmah.
Illogical—the manager's name does not follow from the building's number of floors.
✅ Lif bangunan itu rosak. Dengan demikian, mesyuarat dipindahkan ke bilik di tingkat bawah.
The building's lift is broken. Accordingly, the meeting was moved to a room on the ground floor.
4. Stacking conclusion markers
❌ Kesimpulannya, dengan demikian, singkatnya, cadangan itu perlu disemak.
Overloaded—three markers compete to label one relation.
✅ Kesimpulannya, cadangan itu perlu disemak sebelum dilaksanakan.
In conclusion, the proposal needs to be reviewed before implementation.
5. Omitting the comma after an initial organizer
❌ Pada akhirnya kedua-dua pihak menerima syarat tersebut.
Poor careful punctuation—the initial discourse frame should be followed by a comma.
✅ Pada akhirnya, kedua-dua pihak menerima syarat penyelesaian tersebut.
Ultimately, both parties accepted the settlement terms.
Key Takeaways
Use singkatnya/ringkasnya to compress earlier details, kesimpulannya to state a supported synthesis, dengan demikian for an inference or consequence, and pada akhirnya for an eventual endpoint. Essay conclusions, meeting recaps, and narrative resolutions end different kinds of discourse. Choose the logical relation first, then punctuate the sentence-initial marker with a comma.
